Stopped by here today for a quick lunch. First thought was it’s a bit hard to find as it’s almost hidden behind the auto shop. It’s a nice little place with your usual Mediterranean menu. I noticed it was very warm in the place so I’m not sure if the AC was set a little too high or if the outside heat was a contributing factor (115 degrees today). Temperature aside, the food was amazing. I got the mixed grill platter which came with chicken, gyro, small salad (lettuce, onions, tomatoes – very basic), choice of rice or fries (I got fries), hummus, and a side of pita bread. The gyro had tzatziki sauce and chicken shawarma had the usual garlic sauce. The meat and sauces were full of flavor and delicious! I was surprised to see so many mediocre reviews. Although I’ve been known to be the garbage disposal of the group, that definitely does not apply here. The food and service was great. They’ve only been open for four months so it could be that they’ve improved since the early reviews.

House of Hummus Mediterranean Cafe Menu with Prices 5950 North Point Pkwy #127, Alpharetta

I randomly searched for “mediterranean restaurant” around my office, and this place populated first with the highest rating. I went over for lunch, and I was pleasantly surprised by the food. First, the platter portion is really good. I wanted to get full, so I ordered a lentil soup as well without knowing what the portion will be. I received french fries, a little bit of salad, pita bread, rice, and my choice of meat. The chicken shawarma had enough chicken, but the gyro platter had much more meat. Next time, I am going to get gyro for more meat. Chicken shawarma was savory and great and the fries were seasoned fries. They were not some blend fries, and I loved the fact that they were seasoned. The only downside might be the chicken was a little dry. I don’t know if people have tried this before, but when I eat rice at Mediterranean restaurants, eating it with soup is a great combination. So, I mixed rice with my lentil soup, and the combination was amazing here. Separately, the lentil soup was evenly flavored and savory. There are other great side options, and I am kind of excited to try other food at this restaurant. If you are in the area and want some really good and quick Mediterranean food, check out House of Hummus.

Shish Kabobs and Gyros – Menu with Prices – 9619 N Hayden Rd #106, Scottsdale

Stopped in here for a quick dinner and left really impressed! Seems like a Vietnamese family runs this spot with a combination of Mediterranean and Vietnamese food. Ordered the gyro plate with rice and it also came with hummus, pita and a side salad. The gyro meat was perfection, tender and full of flavor. The hummus had a slight kick to it which I love and of course, warm pita bread to go with it. Good food at a reasonable price. Will definitely be back again!

Chicago Style Gyro – Menu with Prices – 539 Leonard St NW, Grand Rapids

Just ate here for the first time and we were impressed with the food and the staff. We had the Chicago gyro and pita with hummus. The pita was warm and the hummus was delicious but the gyro was awesome! We had it “traditional” with tzatziki, cucumber, tomato, feta, lettuce, bell peppers, and onion. We were surprised that the side was French fries but after tasting them it was clear as day, they were great fries, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Try them with ketchup! Then the piece de resistance, baklava, light and fluffy crust, not too sweet, nutty… perfect. Worth the buck and a quarter a slice. They don’t make it there but its “imported from Detroit” (wink). The staff was friendly and explained the traditional menu and the American side too. The cafe itself was nothing fancy but who cares when the food is so good? Then there is the price, I’d like to say it was cheap but…oh yeah it was cheap! So what are you waiting for, an invitation?? Do it! Keep local cafe’s like this one in business for years to enjoy! Thanks!

Mediterranean Sandwich Company – Menu with Prices – 2502 Schillinger Rd S #2, Mobile

It was Monday evening and some of my favorite spots were closed (gotta love Monday’s in Mobile ) so I was looking for a new place to try that had pretty good reviews. Needless to say, the reviews were great so I decided to give it a try, and they l were not wrong! I ordered the chicken shawarma gyro and it was amazing! I also had half of a Greek salad on the side, that was pretty standard to taste but a half serving was like a full salad, I can only imagine what a normal size would be like! The dressing for the salad was delicious, I’d order the salad again just for that. The pita bread on the side was very tasty as well. My fiancé had the redneck gyro and seemed to enjoy it. I had a couple bites of it and I must say, the meat was very flavorful! We got a baklava on the side as a dessert, I had to save it for later because I was too full from dinner, but it was good! I can’t wait to go back!

The Beestro – Menu with Prices – 66 E San Francisco St Suite 21, Santa Fe

A fast-casual take on Mediterranean in Santa Fe’s Plaza district. You choose whether you want a stuffed pita sandwich, a rice plate, or a salad; you choose a protein such as lamb gyro meat or chicken shawarma; and then load up on all the freebies such as pickled beet, radish, cucumber-tomato salad, and other Mediterranean toppings and garnishes. I went with a pita stuffed with hummus, beef shawarma, with lettuce, cucumber-tomato, pickled veggies, radish, and tzatziki sauce. A nice touch are “Belgian Fries” that you can get with your meal with your drink; just make sure to mention you want them at the beginning of your order so they can cook them while they make your entree. After having adjective-Mexican cuisine throughout the week, having some tasty and quality shawarma was a welcome palate cleanser! It was a mess spilling out of the pita as I ate it, but it just shows they’ll entertain my desire to put a little bit of everything in my meals. The fries were cut and fried fresh, a welcome indulgence that you can easily split. Definitely one of the better pita sandwiches I had, if not the best, and my main detraction is the cost. It was spendy for a lunch, but given the location and options around it, it may actually be a value. And again, I can’t fault the ingredient quality: no chewy gristle or brownish greens in my dish. The 20 oz. drink is for iced tea or lemonade, and being a trash person, I was hoping to get something (more) caffeinated and carbonated. But that’s my failing, and it WAS a good Arnold Palmer I mixed for myself…

Shawarma & Grill – Menu with Prices – 32483 Temecula Pkwy #E117, Temecula

A friend and I will typically eat around this area which has so many plazas on our way to the desert at Borrego Springs or coming back from the Nightfall Starparty. I picked this place our from YELP reviews and I’m so glad we had our lunch here. We were greeted by the pretty cashier, Robyn, and I ordered a Gyro plate while a friend wanted some fries but wanted some meat without the extra stuff included in a combo. They apparently allow ordering a side of just meat. The portions are GENEROUS so I ate half of my order and took the rest to go. My friend couldn’t finish his fries. I tried a bit of the fries and they’re also really good! Something with that seasoning. I also loved the pita bread that went with the hummus that I went up the counter to order two extra pita breads on the side before leaving since I had extra hummus. Robyn actually handed me the pita bread without an extra charge. I definitely love this place and wish it was around LA. There are other great restaurants in the area with great reviews/food, but I will definitely stop by this place again when I go to Nightfall next year.

DCG – District Chicken & Gyro – Menu with Prices – 3147 Dumbarton St NW, Washington

Was super curious how a spot could have a perfect score with so many reviews, so I went to check it out. Thanking my Yelp Army for putting me on to this one. It’s good. Very basic menu. No frills. Meat – lamb or chicken. Bread – pita. Salad. That’s it. Oh, and soda pop/water. About 6 menu items and two of them…the soup and fries…the owner, Tariq, said “sucked” (lol) so he stopped selling them. More about Tariq later. Given the word “gyro” is in the DBA name, you’d think that’s what you’re getting, and you are – sorta. It’s really a riff on a gyro. An Afghan gyro, if you will. Afghanistan is where Tariq is from so it’s his interpretation. That white sauce you see isn’t tzatziki sauce, for example, although it looks like it. It’s mayo based. Not yogurt. Everything else is relatively familiar enough to legitimately get away with calling it a gyro – including the pita bread. I tried both… lamb only….and the lamb + chicken. I ordered the combo gyro to go and ate the lamb- only at one of the tables outside. When Tariq showed up I was still outside eating and struck up a conversation with him. His a very funny and engaging guy. Even let me sample another dish, which was chicken/lamb over rice with a salad sandwiches in the same pan. I asked for some HOT in it – which it was. Another winner dish. The rice is really good and a great base upon which to add the protein and build from. The food is a bit more expensive than the simplicity suggests, but then again, that’s Georgetown for ya. Good food if you’re drunk, high, or otherwise looking for some good stomach-filling goodness. I’ll be back.

Nour express meditteranean grill – Menu with Prices – 1830 George Dieter Dr #110, El Paso

Hot and New on the east side of El Paso so I had to check it out. Walking in, I was a bit surprised by the simplicity of the place but came to find out it’s a simplified menu compared to their west side location. I wanted to try a wide range of options so I opted for the 2 protein/3 sides bowl: – Chicken Shawarma – tasty but some pieces were tough – Beef Shawarma – good flavor but the texture didn’t work for me (cost them half a star ) – Greek salad – fresh tossed and very good – hummus – quite a bit served along with warm pita bread – fries – nothing too special here but I enjoyed dipping them in the garlic sauce (cost them half a star ) I’d like to go back again and try more from their menu in the future.

Yannis Gyros – Menu with Prices – 1814 Adlai Stevenson Dr, Springfield

This is a review for the gyro shoe, which for an outsider is a fascinating piece of Springfield culture. For those new in town: a “horseshoe” is an open-faced sandwich that traditionally consists of a slice of bread, a hamburger patty, and cheese sauce topped with fries, credited with being invented in Springfield in 1928. The gyro shoe served here is a fusion take on that: and consists of a pita, veggies, gyro meat, cheese, and fries topped with tzatziki cause. For gyro (and horseshoe) purists, it’s practically sacrilege. But for those willing to overlook tradition, these elements come together in a surprisingly tasty concoction. My only issue was that the cheese sauce added way too much salt to an already salty dish, and could’ve been “interpreted” as the tzatziki (which, in contrast, added a nice acidity to the dish without oversalting it). The serving size is large, and there are enough fries on it that it doesn’t warrant a separate order of them. I did want to try the Greek fries so I ended up adding it on. They were really well-seasoned and delicious but definitely did not complement the shoe dish well and would be better served accompanying the regular gyros.

Falafel Café Menu with Prices 401 19th St S #100, Birmingham

This is a fairly new place about a block from UAB, a great place to grab a quick lunch or some food to go on the way home. The atmosphere: Not a big place, but has a nice feel to it and is kept very clean. They have about 10 tables inside, and a service bar where you order. The food: I’ve been to many places similar to this in California, and it’s about time we get one in Birmingham. Everything we had here was absolutely delicious. We had the gyro sandwich (gyro + pita + bunch of toppings from the available list) and the chicken shawarma plate (rice + chicken shawarma + hummus with lemon sauce on top + lots of toppings). I most highly recommend the chicken shawarma, the meat was nice and tender and very flavorful. Out of the toppings list I highly recommend trying the chopped salad, Jerusalem salad, red cabbage salad, tahini sauce, pickles, shatta (hot sauce). Just to warn ya, the shatta hot sauce is pretty spicy, but if you enjoy spicy food it’s a great addition. The great thing about this place is you can try as many of the toppings as you want, all included in the price of the sandwich/plate. They additionally have a cooler full of drinks that you shouldn’t miss out on, I highly recommend trying the “Vimto” drink. Price: Very reasonable. For the gyro sandwich we paid $7.49 and for the chicken shawarma plate we paid $9.49. They have very generous portion sizes, and you definitely get your money’s worth. Even more so with the plate options. Service: The workers behind the food bar are very nice, and will take the time to walk you through menu options and give recommendations.

Ali Baba Grill – Menu with Prices – 3033 28th St, Boulder

I visited with a large group (25+ people) while on a road trip to Colorado. We were looking for a nice sit-down restaurant after eating fast food for most of the trip, and we tried out a bunch of different items from the menu, including curry, hummus plates, shawarma, kebabs, gyros, and more. Most of us started with pita bread and hummus. The hummus has a strong peanut flavor, which was pretty good, just different than usual. The pita bread seems to be store-bought (some came room-temperature and dry), which is unfortunate since I love fresh-baked breads. I personally shared a meat lover’s plate for two, which came with salad, hummus, rice, and a plate of 7 kebabs. I was really looking forward to the assorted meats, and though the seasoning was pretty good, I was quite disappointed when almost every piece was very dry. Only one piece of the lamb I ate was passably moist, and the chicken especially was dry and a bit tough. It may have been the fact that the kitchen was cooking for so many people at once that night, but I wish this restaurant could have gotten the kebabs right. I got mixed reactions when asking the others in my group about their food. Some liked their dish, others noticed the same things I did about the pita bread or the dry meat, but no one was really impressed. I guess the general consensus was that it was merely “ok”. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with very comfortable seating along the walls and nice decor. I will say that the service was great. Even with our giant group coming in pretty late in the day, our waitresses always had a smile and moved quickly and efficiently. Overall: 3/5. Though some things were good, for this price, I really wish I could have gotten better food.

Lebanese Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 13031 Lee Jackson Memorial Hwy, Fairfax

Wow this place is awesome. My neighbor recommended this place but I always went elsewhere for kabobs… Now I know where to go from now on. We dined in and you pick any table when you walk in. The service was good and attentive and with all the pickup orders and other diners, I could see that this was the place to be. This place is kid friendly which is a big plus since I have a 1 year old. The only concern I had was all the mess my son was making… Sorry! We got the hummus bel foul which was amazing. The pita bread that came with the appetizer was awesome as well. I noticed pizza was a popular dish from all the pickup orders and I’m not surprised given how good their pita bread is. I got the Kofta kabob and my wife got the Chicken shawarma. The kabob was good but the rice could be better. It was a bit dry and had some weird crunches on a few bites, my guess is it was the seasoning they put in. The chicken shawarma was amazing. Everything on the dish went well with one another. The fries are similar to what you would find at a local non franchised deli. It was decent but not great like everything else on the menu. My standards have gone up due to this place. You won’t be disappointed at all. We will definitely be a frequent customer.
