After being lured in by signs advertising fresh deli sandwiches, with graphic displays of sandwiches piled high with meat, cheese and produce adorning the shop, I walked in, hungry. I stared down an amazing-looking deli case full of delicious-looking mortadella, ham, salami and cheeses, and more. The sandwich prices ranged from $6-8. Worked for me. I asked the person behind the deli counter if the deli was still open. “Yes,” came the answer, quickly. I politely announced my intention to order two sandwiches to go. Then, a look of fear came over the young woman behind the counter. She said that she could not make any sandwiches because she was the only one there. At that exact moment, another person appeared behind the deli counter, this one a man. Now, both people explain that they cannot make sandwiches because the woman is “by herself”. There was only one other customer in the store, who appeared to need no assistance at the moment. Either I’m crazy, and imagining people, or I unwittingly stumbled into some kind of grey or black market enterprise deal going down, or these two fully grown human adults who appeared to have all of their basic mental and physical faculties at their disposal could not make even one sandwich using the fully stocked and equipped deli that they were standing in. Was it something I said?

Golden Gate Market Deli & Liquor – Menu with Prices – 2767 Lombard St, San Francisco

I’m a big fan of deli sandwiches so when Yelp had mentioned this place in one of their email newsletters a while back I bookmarked it. And today I finally had the chance to check it out. It’s like any liquor store but with a deli sandwich counter in the back. The choices are endless and I could have spent forever just trying to decide what to get since all of them sounded so good. I got the One of the Boys (I think it was called) with cajun turkey, spiced salami and cheese on a sweet roll. It was toasted but not too much that it would rip the top of your mouth off (which I despise). The sandwich was good and at a reasonable price. I’d definitely recommend it for sandwich friends.

Pendleton Carryout Co. Menu with Prices 807 Pendleton St, Alexandria

really sad to be posting this because I loved all of their food offerings when they first opened. However, over the last few months the staff has changed, the hours have changed, and so has the food quality. My boyfriend and I loved coming in in the mornings for the breakfast sandwiches. Last week, the woman at the counter yelled at my boyfriend for walking into the open door at 10:55 am because they weren’t open for another five minutes, and then curtly told him they don’t have breakfast sandwiches in, speaking as if it was his fault that he had asked. today the people at the counter had their headphones in and didnt even fully take them out to take our order. Over the past month, they didn’t have the ingredients several times, and today they gave us a sandwich that not only didn’t have the fluffy scrambled eggs we were used to, but the egg was chopped up and not fully cooked through, the cheese wasn’t melted and they were overall soggy. As for the hours, they now dont open until 11, so for breakfast we’ve been hitting up McDonalds again, because in my book, 11am is a little for a breakfast sandwich and I dont want to be walking around midday to pick up lunch in 90 degree heat. Not going back here until they get their act together and turn back into the restaurant they were when they first opened.

Tom’s International Deli – Menu with Prices – 52 Millbury St, Worcester

This place is kept immaculately clean and the lady that works there is very pleasant and attentive. I have tried their ABCD Italian and their Pastrami & Roast Beef sandwiches on grinder rolls. Both have been some of the best deli sandwiches I have ever had, anywhere. Meat and cheese are cut at the moment your sandwich is made, lettuce and tomatoes are fresh as well. The portions are large and the flavors are fresh and delicious. The service is always prompt and friendly. Plus they have a sandwich program where you’re 10th one is free. I’ve tried a number of sandwich shops in Worcester, and this is definitely the best sandwich shop in town!

South Coast Deli – Menu with Prices – 1436 Chapala St, Santa Barbara

Quality and Consistency are two words I would use to describe South Coast Deli. I’ve tried a few of their cold turkey sandwiches, which are always fully loaded and flavorful! Today I wanted to try something new, so I went for the TnA Panini (Turkey, bacon, avocado). I chose wheat bread for the panini, which gave the sandwich a nice dimension of flavors. I love turkey, and this sandwich was flavorful and filling, enough for two meals. I want to try it with the Garlic-Tabasco mayo next time, and maybe garnish the inside with some fresh lettuce. The sandwich lacked nothing and was definitely comfort food…I just really love heat in my food! I had some of their mango iced tea and was very happy and satisfied. I’ve also tried their eggplant and meatball sandwiches on a French roll, which have been delicious as well! I know I can come to South Coast Deli and feel like I have been satisfied and spent my money well…I can’t say that about all sandwich shops in town, because not all have been consistent, in my experience. South Coast Deli is special.

Sprouts Farmers Market – Menu with Prices – 1240 S Signal Butte Rd, Mesa

Sprouts tend to be on the smaller side of grocery stores, more along the lines of a neighborhood Walmart. This location is no exception to the size rule. It is a brand new location having opened in the past couple months so everything is super clean, very new and still beautiful. This location has an outside enclosed seating area as part of its little cafe eat in area. The store is laid out pretty nicely in regard to shopping. At the front you have thd bread section, then the deli area, the fresh meat area, then produce, then freezer area on the outside perimeter. In the center area you have bulk goods, additional produce. In a corner on the opposite side of the front of the store you have the section for cleaning, beauty, etc. Next to the freezer area is the section for dry goods. The store was very clean, everyone seemed to be doing their assigned responsibilities, and everyone appeared happy. I needed assistance finding some things and the employees were cheerfully helpful. I found the prices to be on the higher side for many of the exact same product at other stores. I really dislike when stores do this. Overall everything was very fresh. I still needed to go to another store to finish shopping for additional items I needed or that that just didn’t carry due to their smaller store footprint.

Pat’s Deli & Yogurt – Menu with Prices – 3103 Airport Blvd #150, Mobile

In July, my wife and I was traveling to Destin (Florida) for a family gathering. We went to visit family nearby in Mobile (Alabama). Being a great planner, my wife recommended some activities to visit in Mobile. We visited Patâ??s Deli. We ordered at the counter. I could tell this place was a great venue for locals. The deli is small, cozy for conversation. We even spoke with the owners during our visit. The restaurantâ??s specialty is deli sandwiches and soups. The prices were very reasonable. The menu included a variety of sandwiches, salads, and side dishes. Deserts appeared to be a great attraction to customers. We enjoyed our meal. I would recommend this deli to travelers who are visiting Mobile and want a quick, quality meal among locals.

Vito’s Deli – Menu with Prices – 37 Center St, New Haven

When I walked into Vito’s I felt like I was in a deli from the 1950s. The woman and 2 gentlemen behind the counter were polite, welcoming, efficient, but not over bearing. It was a very positive customer service experience. The store front is kind of tucked away on a side street don’t be thrown this place rocks. They have a bunch of special sandwiches and all the standard fare of a deli. I got a chicken cutlet sandwich, a dr brown soda, and a bag chips. They have a nice selection of drinks and crisps. After a very pleasant interaction to pay I was on my way in no time at all. I went before the lunch rush so I was only one of two customers which may have led to the speed of my interaction. I could imagine at 12:30 on a Friday it’s a happening place with a little line. Although they seemed like they could handle it. Looks like they have a good order ahead policy, not a bad way to go if you know you aren’t interested in waiting. The sandwich was excellent. The cutlet was warm, the lettuce and tomatoes were cold. Simple, fresh, and satisfying. Being only a short walk from the green downtown New Haven, I’ll be going back here for lunch out again. Totally worth a try.

Maryvale Market & Deli – Menu with Prices – 5510 W Camelback Rd, Glendale

It’s been probably 2 decades since I last stopped in for a sandwich here. It hasn’t changed much. It is a small convenience store in a strip mall that has a deli in the corner. It was already a neighborhood institution when I moved here in 93. The meats are Boars Head. Both the woman making my sandwich and the man who took my money were pleasant. Not as many frills and options as the chain sandwich places but it was a little cheaper and just as good.

Fiorello Bakery & Deli Menu with Prices 1180A Western Ave, Albany

If you haven’t stopped in for a breakfast sandwich, you are really missing out! Most days I tend to be prepared and bring breakfast to work or eat before coming in…or just skip breakfast altogether and wait it out until lunch time. Sometimes though, I get hangry in the mornings and take a few steps from my office building next door to Uncommon Grounds. I had basically given up on their breakfast sandwiches as their pre-made, frozen egg patty is just repulsive, and their prices are a bit steep. Paired with lackluster service, I am not always thrilled to order from there. But, I tend to keep it safe and get a bagel with cream cheese, since that usually hits the spot. Today, I wanted something more savory and filling…so I walked a bit further and across the street to Fiorello Bakery and Deli. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought to stop in sooner, as typically Italian Deli’s such as theirs do have some amazing breakfast sandwiches. But, I’m so glad I finally did! Seems like they are a well kept secret in that regard, as there were a handful of people in ordering the same thing I was…sausage egg and cheese on a hard roll. There was a bit of a wait, maybe 10 minutes…which is to be expected when you’re making something fresh to order. The woman at the counter was extremely pleasant and friendly, asked if I wanted salt/pepper and ketchup on the sandwich…I opted for the ketchup on the side so that I could dip each bite as I saw fit. With tax, the sandwich was $4, which i think is really reasonable considering a similar offering from across the street is about $1 more and Fiorello’s puts 2 FRESH eggs on their sandwiches. Paired with the savory sausage, and melted cheese, this sandwich was a literal party in my mouth that I didn’t want to end! I can’t wait to go back…although my waistline probably can…

Crestwood Catering Deli Menu with Prices 22 Picotte Dr, Albany

My husband and I recently visited Crestwood Deli after reading about it in the paper. It took MORE than 30 minutes to get two sandwiches – I could have gone to the store, purchased ingredients AND made the sandwiches before this place even finished burning the sub-par bread for one sandwich. To be clear, we went on a Sunday when the place was totally EMPTY. On to the flavor of the sandwiches: for $15 dollars we got two TINY soggy unappealing lumps of bread, meat and cheese (see photos – the sandwiches are on 7″ dinner roll plates and I used a quarter to demonstrate their minuscule size). They were like 5 inches or less (made a Subway six inch look huge). On top of that, the corned beef used in the Reuben was ice cold and amazingly the burned bread was soggy. Shame on you Crestwood Deli, this is not the kind of food that should be served to customers. I will certainly never recommend this place to anyone. CONCLUSION: Buy your own ingredients at the grocery store and make sandwiches at home!!! P.S. The chef Danny Urschel made the Reuben pictured.

Michael’s Deli – Menu with Prices – 628 S Virginia St, Reno

The first time I ate at Michael’s, I was blown away. It was the best deli sandwich I have ever eaten! I wondered if it was just luck. Maybe a combination of my mood and how hungry I was that day made it seem extra good. Well, when I returned a second time, Michael’s reputation with me was cemented as THE best Deli I have ever been to in my life, I’m not kidding. I was not disappointed and my second experience completely lived up to, if not surpassed, my first. The bread and other ingredients were perfect and high quality, and they know how to put just the right amount of everything on the sandwich. Unlike many mom and pop sandwich places and a certain New York style deli located in a local casino, they don’t overload their sandwiches with so much meat that it drowns out everything else and you can’t fit your mouth around it . They put the perfect amount of everything so you get a delicious medley of flavor with each bite. Their sandwiches aren’t show pieces for tourists to post on Facebook, they are meals, meant to actually be eaten and enjoyed by people’s taste buds.

Totally Baked – Menu with Prices – 348 Jefferson St, Savannah

This place is rather new and I had a 1/2 hour to kill while I was waiting for someone nearby so I thought I would stop in a give it a try. It was lunch time and no one else was there so I did wonder about that. I ordered a “Great Dane” which is roast beef with some unique cheese and on marble rye. It was super good. This was a very fine sandwich and it hit the spot perfectly. After tasting the food I hope more people try this place as it is very good and I don’t think many people know about it. The owner was there and he told me he has another more well established restaurant around the corner. He was very friendly. It is small place but very suitable to sit down and have a sandwich with 3 to 4 people. It may be more designed for take out and grab and go. They also sell deli meat by the pound which I will try. One of my new favorite places. If you like deli sandwiches this is your place. Reminds me a bit of NY or NJ deli with a Savannah funky twist. I recommend it!
