I’ll preface this review with I was starving. Great stop for quick and tasty tacos. I went with the cashier’s recommendation for tacos–one pork, one shrimp/taco plate, rice and beans. Order came out quickly, food was fresh, hot and tasty. Salsa bar a nice touch for extra flavor and/heat. Pork was tender with some spice that didn’t overpower. The shrimp was even better. Tender, not hard cooked… ‘traditional rice’ was a wee bit dry for my liking but the flavor was on point. I ordered black beans–tender and tasty. The meal filled my empty stomach for under $7! Overall, good quality food, inexpensive cost. Fast service—granted it was slow but both the cashiers and manager checked in, were very friendly and chatted with myself and my partner (we were in our volunteer uniforms ) dining area of restaurant was very clean, tons of TVs were a bit distracting and the music was turned up pretty loud (mix if genre) but not so much where I couldn’t hear the conversation at the table—maybe they were prepping for Cinco de Mayo crowd? Will definitely have to stop by during a happy hour and check it out again.

Bamboo One Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 70 Colony Rd, Newport News

I came here with my family for a late lunch on a Monday. The restaurant was empty but I’ve been determined to find flavorful asian cuisine in Virginia. I ordered the Shrimp dumpling, pork shao-mai, BBQ Pork Bun, Sesame Rice Ball, Walnut Shrimp, Yanzhou Rice, and Grilled Beef over White rice(C2). Everything was amazing, the Yangzhou Rice was very authentic, as authentic as it can be considering we aren’t in Yangzhou. All the food tasted fresh and it was noticeable that the food was made to order based on temperature, presentation, and flavor. The Sesame Rice Ball was flavorful and the inside tasted great, the consistency of the inside was too sticky for my liking but it was tasteful nonetheless. In addition, the walnut shrimp was too saucy for my liking, however the sauce was so rich in flavor that it also overpowered the shrimp too much for my liking- Still a great dish. The BBQ Pork Bun and Pork Shao-Mai both came out steaming and were great! They reminded me of the restaurant back home. The only reason I gave this place four stars is due to the sanitation, it’s not dirty by any means but the restaurant could have a cleaner restroom. Don’t let this deter you because i’d definitely come back to this restaurant!

Five Spice Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 1949 Lynnhaven Pkwy Ste 1560, Virginia Beach

GET IN HERE ASAP! This place is our new favorite for fast casual dining. So far we have tried the Zesty Shrimp, Walnut Shrimp, & Pork Belly bowls, the dumplings, and an Egg Puffle with Ice Cream and chocolate/caramel drizzle. While everything has been mouthwatering good, the Zesty Shrimp is by far our favorite. Both shrimps are very similar to the Bang Bang style shrimp, the Walnut being a little sweeter while the zesty has a great kick. They have an awesome crunch and you get SO MUCH with even the small bowl. We also love the rice with the pork and pickled veggies! It’s a nice little addition of flavor that adds to the dish. The pork belly is clearly also great, because they’re always selling out of it! It was very tender and well seasoned. I’m not sure I’ve ever had a dumpling I didn’t like, and these are no exception. Great flavor and a nice sear, and you get 10 in the order. Perfect for sharing… or as a meal. The egg puffle though…. as Janice from Friends would say: Oh. My. GOD. They’re a little pricey, especially when creating your own, but the food at this place is so reasonably priced I don’t even care. My tastebuds would also tell you it’s totally worth it. I would actually forego ice cream cones entirely in favor of just always having an egg puffle with my ice cream. The warm puffle with the ice cream: heavenly. Like I said, just get in here already. But prepare yourself for the daily cravings you’ll be getting for this food. (Side note: last time we went we had to wait a few minutes to order. The girl at the counter let us know they were a little backed up after a big rush, but it was our second visit and we knew it was worth the wait. The staff is always hustling to get things out quickly and everyone we’ve encountered is so friendly! Give them a little bit of a break if it’s a little slow as they really get rolling. They’re worth it!)

Teriyaki Japan Inc – Menu with Prices – 8902 165th St # 115, Jamaica

Called Sarkura and located in the basement of the Colosseum Mall, this is one of the few eating establishments trying to make a go of it in the Colosseum Mall. They offer cheap chicken, beef or shrimp with vegetables and rice or noodles in a Japanese-like sauce. For those that pass on the meat and shrimp, like your favorite vegetarian reviewer, they have veggies with rice or Soba noodles. While the serving is plentiful and cost low (about $3.00) the flavor is low too. Very blend. They get a plus for having a veggie dish, but even vegetarians enjoy flavor. Not worth the stop on the limited vegetarian tour of Jamaica.

Lee’s Noodle House – Menu with Prices – 1010 Hopper Ave, Santa Rosa

I ordered the rice noddles with grilled shrimp. The shrimp had blackened tails and there was no flavor to the shrimp. No sauce used when grilling, no oil, seasonings, nothing. The rice noodles were cold and seemed like they were straight out of a prepackaged bag from the fridge. A little shredded lettuce and a few cucumber slivers on top. $10.00. Not impressed at all. There was a small bowl of “dressing” to pour over everything – and it was weak and bland. I should have gone to Lyn’s Thai or Tiny Thai in Cotati. On the positive, the dining room looked nice and well kept. I appreciated the clean shiny resin finish on the tables.

LA Express Chinese Food – Menu with Prices – 2229 S Mountain Ave, Ontario

I don’t understand the high reviews. I went here and the food did not impress at all, even for fast food standards. I ordered a 3 item combo with some veggie egg rolls to try. The price was cheap and portions were huge, but taste and quality lacked. I ordered half chow mien half fried rice, with orange chicken, beef broccoli, and bbq pork. Both the chow mien and fried rice lacked flavor, plus rice seemed undercooked and was hard. The orange chicken was okay. It had a tangy orange flavor, but was not as crispy as it should be. It was probably the best of the 3 entree items. The beef broccoli was just okay, also lacking flavor. The bbq pork was also a disappointment. It was overcooked and not tender. It also lacked flavor. The egg rolls were also a complete disappointment. I ate one and threw away the rest… and I had to force myself to finish one. The veggies inside seemed undercooked and the pieces of veggies were huge! It was like eating a raw carrot, not a tasty juicy egg roll. Maybe their chicken egg roll is better… but I have no desire try any more of their foods. Would I come back here… I think it is safe to say that I have no desire to ever come back here. The meal, which was originally cheap turned out to be more pricey as I ate less than half and ended up throwing away the rest of it because it was terrible. I don’t know what’s in the food of the people giving this place 4 and 5 stars. It is far from tasty and authentic. Panda express is better. If you want a good cheap tasty Chinese food place, go to Tasty Goody in Monrovia.

Coco Shrimp – Menu with Prices – 4440 Basswood Blvd, Fort Worth

I like food trucks. I have been seeing this pop up on my social media and made a point to check it out the next time I was in the area. Well, that day came yesterday. The truck is located in the parking lot of the Ace hardware. They have a couple of picnic tables set up and island music playing. The employees were friendly and the food came out fast. I was the only one there when I ordered, but while I waited, they had a few people show up for take out. I ordered the spicy shrimp. The order came with six shrimp, salad and rice. The salad was a combination of green leaf lettuce, carrot, cucumber and dried cranberries. It was crunchy and fresh and I enjoyed the ginger dressing. The rice was cooked perfectly and had some garlic butter on top. It tasted good but was a bit rich for me. There was lots of butter. The shrimp was good sized and tender. They were coated in, what tasted like, a mixture of garlic butter and tobacco. It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but it was tasty. I would definitely come again to try a different flavor and maybe skip the extra butter on the rice. There was plenty of food in the box, more than I could finish. It is a little pricy for lunch but the portions are definitely dinner sized.

Hunan Garden Chinese Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 963 Ann St, Montgomery

I would give it between a 2 and 3. Lets start with good and move to what I see could be improved. My wife had General Tso, very tasty chicken all the meat was tender. I had a classic pork egg foo young, cooked perfectly. Know for my detractors we also order crab Rangoon and the batter was great and cooked great but their was next to NO filling inside, very disappointing. The gravy for the egg foo young was tasty but very thin and watery. Our pork fried rice had a burn flavor (like smoked, good for meat but not Chinese rice) and the last item the egg roles had a extra salty bite to them. Overall we may give this place a try again to confirm or improve.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue – Menu with Prices – 5730 Cottle Rd Ste.120, San Jose

I was really excited to like this place and I did on my first visit but my second visit was a real pain. I’m not sure if it’s just still a little too new and they’re working out the kinks of expediting in the kitchen. We came in to grab food for take out and it seemed like we came just in the nick of time since there was a horde of people after us. My friend and I pretty much got the same meat order – BBQ chicken but mine was a mini and his was the full sized dinner. The base BBQ chicken comes with mac salad and rice but I was able to get the rice swapped out for a green salad at no extra cost which was nice. I got my order soon after and I would have expected that he would have gotten his after too but he didn’t. They got the orders out of around 6 people who ordered after us and were dining in before they even acknowledged that we were still just waiting by the counter. I did make a note of what the orders of the other guests were and while some did order other meats, the BBQ chicken was served up a lot so it wasn’t like they ran out of that. My friend also made no substitutions so they weren’t making some special for him. I’d think that when someone is getting something to go, they have somewhere to go and places to be. They also tend to be standing around taking up room versus people who are dining in and have settled somewhere so I feel like it’s generally in a restaurant’s best interest to get the take away orders out the door first. The food was honestly pretty good. The mac salad could have a little less dressing on it imo. I’m just not impressed with having to wait until they served the entire restaurant before getting to someone with take out orders. The plaza that this place is in has tons of food. Next time I’ll go somewhere else when I need to grab something fast.

Pho Bowl & Grill – Menu with Prices – 1006 Mission Ave Ste C, Oceanside

Okay, I was not going to write another review on Pho Bowl & Grill. I have to make this one my last exception. It was that good. Today was a 5 STAR +++++ day. I finally asked Lanh aka Chris, the owner, what he and/or his family would usually have. He said his family frequently eats: H1. Spicy Beef Noodle Soup Rich flavory lemongrass broth served with rice vermicelli noodles, tender beef shark, tendon, pork and shrimp sausage This by far was probably the best Vietnamese dish I have ever eaten in what most would say was a predominately known for “pho” restaurant. The pork and shrimp sausage is absolute perfection exploding with flavor. It was my favorite thing in the bowl. The tendon was gelatinous but very tasty. I had my reservations upfront about the tendon, but it definitely added to the experience. In the past, my experience with tendon has been it was very difficult to chew. The tender beef had just the right amount of fat to add to its flavor. The broth was rich in flavor and had a taste unlike any other pho bowls I have had in the past. Delicious. It had to have been the lemongrass in the broth. For my own personal taste, it could have been more spicy, but that is why they have all of the extra condiments on the table. Make it your way by adding whatever seasoning you like. Easily, Vietnamese food is some of the most interesting and flavorful food in the world. At least, it is my favorite. I have been to Spain, Portugal, France, Marrakesh and loved the food. I have been all over Mexico, Central and South America. Lived in the Philippines. Been to Japan. I think I can speak with some degree of experience. If you have not eaten Vietnamese food, you are really missing out. Give it a try and don’t be shy. Food should be an experience. A hamburger can be a “real” experience or it can just be another hamburger. I think you know what I mean. If you want to step out of your comfort, try something you might not have previously tried. And, did I mention this place is VERY reasonably priced at $8.25 for a small pho and $8.95 for a large pho. Oh, before I forget, I was with one of my best friends who is absolutely not an adventurous eater and he had the “chicken fried rice”. I was lucky to get him into a pho restaurant. When I quizzed him about how good was it, he said it was one of the best he had ever eaten. He, also, said when we go back he will probably try a vermicelli bowl which would be breaking entirely out of his comfort zone. I think I have a convert.

Eight Turn Crepe – Menu with Prices – 23119 Colonial Pkwy Suite C-8, Katy

Thank you to my friend Donna T. For telling us about this amazing crepes restaurant. Walking into this sparkling clean and modern looking place makes you feel comfortable right away. The young lady behind the counter was very friendly and helpful. Walking us thru the menu until we were sure exactly what we wanted to try. The crepes here are made with rice. So light and flavorful. I had the avocado and shrimp crepe. Spicy and so delicious. It’s only $8.95 and very filling. I would certainly have that again on my next visit. My wife had the lox and cream cheese crepe. Her crepe was also $8.95. She loved her crepe also. We both strayed from our usual iced tea as they only had jasmine iced tea. So we opted for Japanese sodas. Patty had s strawberry flavor and I had a orange flavor. Fortunately for us the young lady opened them for us. Talk about a weird system to open a bottle. Patty said her strawberry soda was tasty and refreshing. The orange soda was also tasty. There was a young man, who we assume was the manager, that checked on us several times to make sure everything was good and to our satisfaction. He was curious as to how we found them. I told him he owes Donna T. For so highly recommending his restaurant. Overall this was a excellent dining experience. Good food, good service, clean and inviting restaurant. We will be back.

Taste of Portugal – Menu with Prices – 148 Delancey Street, Newark

You’re greeted by a friendly and helpful staff as you walk in to the dining room. You could sit either at the bar area or in the dining room in the back. Both have ample seating Bread service was Portuguese bread with warm butter and olives in olive oil seasoned with garlic. The bread was delicious and warm and the butter was spreadable. The olives were seasoned with garlic and olive oil which made them very tasty and the olive oil was a nice base to dip your bread. We ordered three main courses consisted of garlic shrimp with rice and Spanish potatoes, skirt steak with french fries and rice and stuffed shrimp with crabmeat, salad and Spanish potatoes. We ordered a half pitcher of red sangria which was delicious not too strong just perfect. The garlic shrimp with tasty seasoned well with tons of garlic. The Spanish potatoes were crunchy not greasy and delicious. The dish with the stuffed shrimp with crabmeat was great. The shrimps were huge loaded with crab meat. The only thing that we had a problem with was the skirt steak. It was not seasoned well and it was a little tough. But everything else was wonderfully delicious. For dessert we ordered the seradura and tres leche. The seradura was nice and freshly made an the tres leches was also very good, loaded with sweet milk. All in all a great meal with great service on top of it. Will definitely be going back.

Mariscos Las Islitas Menu with Prices 1601 Panama Ln #109, Bakersfield

We came in and were greated by a very nice gentlemen. The host took us to our seats. It was a little breezy so we asked for. Different table we got seated in a little spot in the middle which was nice. They forgot to clean the tables but i just didnt want to complain at the time. Anyway we ordered the oyster shots they were quite tasty. Each shot had 2 oysters inside and the shrimp..omg the shrimp. They were delicious. So crunchy and idk just really good. We had the shrimp, pulp, and fish soup and the meat molcajete. The soup was actually very good. The shrimp again was delicious and the fish very tasty. The molcajete was smaller than what I’m use to. The flavors were okay. The meats were good. The flavor just idk wasnt all that good. They give you 3 tortillas or 6 and then you can ask for more. They dont seem to charge. The molcajete comes with rice and beans. The salsa that comes with the chips are yum. These are complimentary. I would def go back to get some shrimp plates and a few of their margaritas.
