My boys (well, old men) and I go out for sushi buffet lunch every Wednesday. Our regular stops are (or have) included Ginza, Shinju, Tokyo Bay, and Santos. We headed to Shinju today to find it closed. The sign on the door says its closed for maintenance and will reopen on some unspecified future date. Yeah, that’s what the Ginza sign said too. My guess is Shinju, like Ginza, is history.. . I unilaterally announced that we were going to Ichiyami, and we did: two who have been there before and two newbies. The remaining quartet went elsewhere, no doubt their loss.. . The four of us enjoyed our food immensely. The quality, freshness, variety, flavors, and presentation were all first rate. Even the Hot and Sour soup, a predictable staple everywhere, tasted great and a bit different from other preparations.. . I tried a wide variety of sushi and hot dishes; there were perhaps a couple among them that I didn’t rave about. That’s a Hall of Fame average. . . We all said we can’t wait to go back!

Ginza Sushi Fusion Cuisine – Menu with Prices – 13216 N 7th St Ste B2, Phoenix

This is probably one of my favorite sushi restaurants for the friendliness of the owners and staff who always make you feel welcomed as guests and friends. All of the menu items I’ve tried are great. The bar staff was delightful and we have never experienced long waiting times for food or drinks. As a Unfranchise business owner, another thing I like to do is support local businesses and Ginza is family-owned and operated. I’ve had their tofu plate, several of their sides, the miso and cocktails. All of tasted great. I have always been a bit sushi fan but in recent years I transitioned to plant based eating as an Ovo-vegan not many sushi houses carry a variety of vegan options that I can really say enjoy as much as the plates I’ve ordered at Ginza. We also have never had long wait times for seating. The atmosphere is casual but elegant with a fun outdoor tiki patio. Definitely worth trying.

Taishow Sushi – Menu with Prices – 1180 El Camino Ave, Corona

So yelp and the sign outside this place said 9PM for when this place closed… even the waitress admits this, so when we came at 8:30pm, hoping to be seated. The waitress says that kitchen was already closed despite the expected closing is 9pm… They at least gave us option for sushi only and to go for it… so that we didn’t have to be empty handed… still… I was disappointed. I feel like posted hours should be when kitchen is closed unless you are a bar or a type is establishment where it’s assumed though it says 2AM closing time (like a karaoke food place), one knows the hot foods usually stop at around 10pm… Anyways, sushi and sashimi was what we ordered. It was GOOD. I definitely would like to come back during their actual operating hours to try some of their non-sushi/sashimi options. So may upgrade ratings next time if that goes well. Hours Posted: 2 Service (average): 3 Sushi/Sashimi: 4.5 Overall: 3

Pusan Sushi – Menu with Prices – 10780 Fairfax Blvd, Fairfax

NOTE: I am not reviewing any sushi platters this place makes. Those may be good. Review: I have no idea how this place gets 4.5 stars. I was looking for a sushi joint at about 2:30PM one afternoon and should have known most would be closed at that time. The initial restaurant I went to was close by and unfortunately closed. When I found this place on Yelp, (labelled as a restaurant) I figured I was in luck. I passed by H-Mart wondering where this place was until I realized the address was H-Mart. OK, bad sign, but it got 4.5 stars!! It’s gotta be decent. Here’s what you get: sushi in a plastic covered tray that you can buy in any grocery store off of the shelf. I was in a rush and hungry so I got some anyways. It was actually worse than I thought because it was clearly OLD sushi that had been sitting there since who knows when. You know when you eat fish and it’s dried out… yes it’s clearly old. In general, if you’re foolish enough to buy grocery store sushi sitting on a shelf, then you shouldn’t be surprised by the poor quality but I have to admit that this was pretty bad even by poor standards. I have nothing against this place, but I don’t want others to be fooled. The other reviewers giving this place 4 to 5 stars for sushi (not talking about the platters) either are friends of the joint or have no clue as to what fresh fish is.

Sushi Miyazawa – Menu with Prices – 372 Chandler St, Worcester

This place is amazing. It truly is the most authentic sushi restaurant I have been to in New England. To begin, it is located in a nice brick building with parking so you don’t need to search or pay for street parking. The hostess/waitress is very friendly and nice. I appreciate that there is a sign in wait list and you can sit in the indoor tables outside while contemplating what you want to order. This place is also BYOB so remember to bring a nice authentic bottle or cup of Sake or a Asahi beer to pair with the sushi to get the most out of your experience. I ordered the nigiri omakase. It was very good. I was very impressed with the quality and the freshness of the fish. Not only the the sushi chef meticulously craft each delicate piece, he made it into a work of art. The sushi chefs were very nice and authentically Japanese. 5/5 stars in my opinion. You know that it’s an awesome restaurant when you see a waitlist when you walk in the door! I will be coming back very soon! To sum it all up, this place does amazing work. I’ve traveled the world, lived in Japan, NYC, LA and even Boston; I have to say that the quality and taste of this sushi can rival that of a competitive restaurant in Japan and New York. I am also one of the harshest and dreadfully honest critics on Yelp. This establishment has my stamp of approval. P.S.- this is addressing the comment where the sushi chefs do not wear food gloves; ONLY TRUE SUSHI CHEFS DO NOT WEAR FOOD GLOVES! Below is an excerpt from the Guardian: “Sushi is traditionally prepared with bare hands, and good chefs rely on tactile sensation to gauge the quality of the meat – the freshness, the fattiness, the oil content – that they’re cutting and molding into just the right bites” Reference: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/nov/12/why-i-want-my-sushi-prepared-with-bare-hands I, myself, would walk out of a sushi restaurant if the sushi chef wore gloves. It detracts from the connection the chef has with the food he is preparing. It allows him to better understand the quality and texture of the ingredients he is working with- Per the article I cited above. Watch the “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” documentary for your own further edification so that you do not sound foolish making ignorant and silly comments.

Jack?s Fusion Sushi – Menu with Prices – 427 E 17th St, Costa Mesa

Me and my two kids were still on our mission to find the best sushi in Costa Mesa/Newport area, specifically near 17th Street. A friend had recommended Jack’s Fusion Sushi but after several let downs with other sushi restaurants on this street I waited awhile. I wish I hadn’t waited so long! We went tonight and Jack’s Fusion Sushi is by far the BEST SUSHI RESTAURANT in this area and I have tried 6+. The food here exceeded even the high end sushi restaurants! Their menu had more variety than I’ve seen at any other restaurant. The flavor was terrific! I am very particular with my sushi and must have good flavors, not just the sushi itself but sauces, condiments, salads, soups, etc. we ordered the rainbow crunch roll, crunch roll, and Costa Mesa roll. We also got a house salad (the ginger dressing was amazing!!), miso soup, and baked green muscles. They also provided edamame to start our meal on the house. I will not go anywhere else, this one is it! My two daughters also agreed with me! They have a great special pricing on their rolls, they also had Happy Hour specials when we walked in. Our server Claire was so sweet with a very kind smile. She was very attentive and offered prompt service! This place isn’t huge inside but plenty of room with a sushi bar. It’s a bit hidden from the street unfortunately, I had to look for the shopping center sign where the business name blends in with the others. It’s in the same shopping area as America’s Cup Yogurt. You can order through Yelp, Grub Hub, and Door Dash I believe. We will definitely be back!

Zen Sushi & Sake – Menu with Prices – 3070 Lakecrest Cir Ste 500, Lexington

Zen Sushi has reset the bar on my standards for sushi. It has rendered my taste useless for all other sushi’s that don’t meet their quality. Imagine your back in high school, and your crush walks through the door. You’re blinded by her beauty and can’t think of anyone else you’d rather be with… I only have eyes (and a taste) for Zen. My staple go-to’s are Fancy Salmon and Amazing Tuna. No matter what else I plan to order, these are a must. For dessert, the cheesecake will sweep you away. It’s light, creamy, and pairs perfectly with the accompanied chocolate mousse. You won’t skip on dessert after trying this.

SUSHI ING Japanese Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 8855 Viscount Blvd, El Paso

Pretty excited a rotating sushi bar is here in town. I would suggest this place to anyone in town who enjoys sushi or for adventurous eaters. For those who don’t know, sushi goes around a conveyor belt and you can pick up whatever you want to eat. Since it’s not all you can eat, and you pay per plate, the price can rack up pretty quick. I easily racked up a bill of $60+ for just me. However, for me it was totally worth it. You can find certain types of sushi you can’t find anywhere else in town such as sweet shrimp. The quality and freshness of the sushi itself can be variable however, especially if they have been rotating all day. If you aren’t in the mood for sushi, they also have bowls and other things like calamari available. You can also order directly if you are craving a certain thing on the menu. This place is also great if you are in a rush because there will also be sushi already available once you walk in. Overall, I would suggest this place to everyone in town. Even though the price can be expensive, especially for your typical rolls, you can find certain things here that you can’t find anywhere else.

Fujisan Sushi Menu with Prices 1216 Harris Ave, Bellingham

Wonderful new little sushi restaurant. Iâ??ve been there two times since my first try. Very very clean, quick service and excellent fresh food.. . Iâ??ve had the wonderful octopus, tempura shrimp appetizers, small house salad, the 5 piece sashimi (bigger pieces than others), sushi, miso soup, and the teriyaki eel and rice bowl. I can attest that ALL were the best, just excellent. Best of all, good quality at a lower fair price!. . This is my sushi place now instead of Blue Fin Sushi, I find the value is much better and quality is just as good while they have some different things than Blus Fin.. . I highly recommend, you wonâ??t be disappointed.

Misaki Sushi Menu with Prices 2501 Dallas St, Aurora

I dream of Misaki sushi because it truly meets a diner’s demands for high-quality sushi, great service, and a relaxed atmosphere. Nestled in the Stanley Marketplace, they have a variety of seating which includes tables or at the sushi bar. I highly recommend seating at the sushi bar, so you can talk to the chefs and see how your food is being made. I won’t specifically point out which sushi to get because you can’t go wrong with ANY of them. There are several appetizers that I want to highlight. I love karaage and have had exceptional ones from NYC. The ones served at Misaki can be compared to the ones I’ve had in NYC. The surprise appetizer was their black-cod miso yaki. The cod had been steamed in a miso sauce and it simply melted in my mouth. I didn’t have a single dish I didn’t like. When compared to a well-established and loved sushi place in Denver, I believe Misaki outranks them simply because of the value to quality of the dishes and service I got. Ever since I went, I have convinced any of my friends who want to get sushi to go there!

Akasaka Sushi – Menu with Prices – 6196 S Highland Dr, Salt Lake City

As with any of my other reviews, I am by no means a food “expert.” At the end of the day, like you, I just really enjoy eating out at tasty restaurants. That being said, this review is coming from a perspective of someone who frequently dines in at this location. Every time I come to this restaurant I always go for their All-You-Can-Eat option which is around 25 bucks. This includes appetizers (gyoza, miso soup, tempura), main courses (rice bowls and the like), and most importantly – their specialty rolls. The reason why I enjoy coming here so much are for 2 reasons. 1) The food: The sushi here is pretty darn good. Now the sushi I’m referring to, I’m aware isn’t “authentic” sushi, but the roll variety. I’ll break down the consistencies that win points with me. – The rice is never mushy nor is it too dry. Perfect for the rolls. – The rolls always hold their form. I never have a difficult time picking up individual pieces. – The fish itself is good. There’s no distinct bad odor, and the freshness level is above average for most sushi places. – The chef makes use of a wide variety of ingredients which is probably why the special sushi roll menu is so vast. – Fried rolls always have a good layer of crisp and although there’s a bit more rice than I would like, they’re still delectable. Also, the appetizers and main courses are pretty good as well. If I had to pick, I would probably order the gyoza and mixed tempura for appetizers and just stick to specialty rolls for the main event. 2) The atmosphere/workers: I’m 100% sure that Akasaka sushi is a Ma and Pa locally owned sushi restaurant and it truly feels that way. I’ve been here enough that the folks at the restaurant recognize me and I’m always greeted with not only a smile, but an overall exuberant energy that seems to reliably elevate my mood. The main guy who makes the sushi rolls is charismatic and charming and I’m pretty sure if you asked, would be willing to customize orders just for you. My only “complaint” would be that the serving staff can be a bit short but I think it’s because they really only have family run the establishment. Service can be a tiny bit slow when it’s busy because of this, but if you’ve got the time, they’ve got the kindness to spare so try to overlook it. Overall, I personally really enjoy akasaka sushi. Maybe I’m biased and I’ve got a bit of a weakness for sweet folks. However, don’t let that fool you. The food is reliably delicious. If you’ve got to get your sushi roll fix, make sure you stop in here.

Flower Brook Mifen House – Menu with Prices – 44-35 Kissena Blvd, Flushing

Came here after a doctor’s visit on a rainy day. No umbrella, but it’s walkable from Charles b Wang community center. Place looks Asian but also hipster. Cashier speaks English very well. I wasn’t sure what type of noodle they had so I went with my gut and ordered my favorite lamb topping on noodle soup. The guy charged me $9. That’s a little expensive for a bowl of noodles. Also I got the Wang lo Kat drink which was $2. I said to stay and I got my food from the counter and there were sone unknown pink stuff in it. I thought it was ginger because it looked like ginger from japanese sushi restaurants but it was sour and had texture like a cabbage. I stopped eating that and focused on the noodle and the noodles were like hand-pulled noodles except a bit more uniformed but same amount of positive mouth feels, chewy and smooth at the same time like what the other reviews say. The soup was amazing which I didn’t expect because I asked for less spicy and usually I prefer spicy noodle soup but it didn’t need the spicy to make it taste good. The sour vegetables complimented the rich beef broth really well. They give lots of cilantro to contrast the flavors. I usually don’t like half a boiled egg in my noodle soup but this was a tea leaf egg, which made it okay. I will visit here again when I go see the doctor again! Or maybe even just to show my friends. It was pretty dead when I went so I was skeptical of their food being good. But to be fair I went at 3ish pm

Marco & Luca Dumpling Store – Menu with Prices – 176 Zan Rd, Charlottesville

Something interesting here is that this location has a chicken curry that I’ll address later in the review. I enjoy the simplicity of the sauces that they use. The dumpling sauce is sweet yet spicy, not too dense and compliments the dumplings well. The porkiness of the dumpling shines through, yet I wish the chive flavor was more pronounced. The peanut noodles here are quite good, shame that they’re more expensive than the dumplings themselves and the prices have only increased in the most recent years. The sweet and sour noodles are questionable and you find yourself only ordering them once and then reverting back to your peanut noodle orders. The soup is quite generic but one doesn’t come here for the soup. The aforementioned chicken curry was banal and honestly quite uninspired, granted I shouldn’t expect much as their main staple of the menu is dumplings and noodles. Something I wish to see in the future is more variety in dumplings and less exploration of food items no one really asks for. Instead of curry and soups, just have dumplings and noodles and do it well. All in all, its not a bad place to come and chill with a friend for a snack on the Corner if you’re not too hungry.
