My Grandmother used to purchase food from here from time-to-time and it used to be very, very good. We used to all rave about the deliciousness of the food from “The House of Prayer,” but what I experienced after years of not having their food was quite sub-par. They didn’t have a lot of options as they said that he had “another event later in the day,” and they didn’t have many meat options, just two types of chicken. I chose to not purchase meat. I asked for a vegetable plate that was made of black-eyed peas over white rice, macaroni, cabbage, and cornbread. I also purchase what I thought was red velvet cake but it was not. The black-eyed peas and macaroni were the best on the plate. The cabbage tastes very bitter–almost like vinegar was in them. I was somewhat repulsed. The cornbread was quite dry and almost had the consistency of a cookie. This was not “The House of Prayer” food I had and enjoyed as a child. It has honestly changed drastically. Also, the cake was Strawberry Cake masquerading as Red Velvet Cake. I got it home and tasted it and I don’t really care for Strawberry Cake. This was not a pleasant experience, but I hope improvements will be made soon and restore the taste back to what it used to be.

Sascee’s Southern Style Eatery – Menu with Prices – 719 S 11th St, Waco

The best southern cooking I’ve had in ages. Their fried chicken is what all fried chicken wishes it could be!!! Portions are large. You order a 1, 2 or 3 meat plate with three sides. When we were there the sides were mashed potatoes (covered in butter, yum), sweet potatoes, collard greens, black eyed peas, corn bread stuffing, cabbage, cheesey broccoli & rice and they bring a basket of cornbread to your table. The meats were ribs, ox tail, meatloaf, baked chicken and FRIED CHICKEN. We didn’t have desert, but I heard someone say cobbler and don’t know what else they offered. The staff were very friendly and service was good. You can eat in or take out. It seemed like a popular place to get take-out after church. This is a very well hidden treasure we found by accident on our way home after Thanksgiving holiday. We will definitely make sure to drive back this way just so we can eat here again.

Nancy Jo’s Homemade of Raleigh – Menu with Prices – 1201 Agriculture St, Raleigh

With so many taste options at the Raleigh Farmer’s Market its hard to stand out but Nancy Jo’s makes some seriously yummy cakes and cupcakes. I have tried the caramel cake & cupcakes, red velvet cupcakes, strawberry cake and pig picking cake & cupcakes. The “cakes” are usually a half of a cake – which is actually a decent serving option most of the time but there are usually a few whole cakes available. If you have something in particular you want in mind, I would suggest giving them a call. They are always happy to place something on hold for you and if you give them a heads up they can even make sure its available the day you want to come pick it up. It is a little pricey, sometimes almost $40 for a cake but man are they good! The cupcakes are HUGE too – there are 4 in a box but I can assure you one will fill you. The cake is soft and airy and very moist but by no means wet. I had never heard of a “pig picking cake” before but the description sounded good – orange cake with pineapple frosting. You might expect it to taste like a super sugary pina colada; however, it is rather magical. Again, the cake is light and moist but doesn’t taste especially like oranges (or at least I can’t taste it). The frosting is whipped and fresh with taste little flecks of pineapple. I have taken this cake and cupcakes to several parties – people gobble it up, moaning with each bite. I didn’t personally eat the red velvet cupcakes (I’m not a fan of cream cheese) but my sister ,who is a red velvet fanatic, told me they were excellent. The caramel and strawberry cakes were just what you expect – and I mean that in the best way possible. Wonderful vanilla cake with obviously homemade caramel frosting and strawberry cake with strawberry frosting. I’m more of a fan of caramel but I assure you I sampled the strawberry and wasn’t disappointed. The people are incredibly helpful too! I’ve called more than once with requests and last minute begging for them to put something aside while I race there to pick it up before they close. They are accommodating in every way. Next time you have a BBQ or dinner party and you don’t feel like baking – do yourself a serious favor and go pick up a cake. It will be better than anything you would have thrown together and everyone will be asking for the recipe.

Ms. B’s Southern Soul Food – Menu with Prices – 676 St Andrews Rd, Columbia

There were not a lot of reviews but we decided to try Ms. B’s anyway. The food was delicious, staff friendly, restaurant and restrooms were clean. I had the turkey wings, Mac & cheese, cabbage, rice & gravy, and corn bread. My husband also had the turkey wings, but with black eye peas and Mac & cheese as his sides with the rice and gravy and cornbread. The turkey wings were seasoned well and falling off the bone. They were so good we overate and split another plate between the three of us. My son had the fried chicken and enjoyed it too. The vegetables were good too. On our extra plate we had the fried okra as a different side. We’re new to the Elgin/Columbia area and are happy we’ve found a restaurant with great food, portions, and service.

Sum 2 Eat – Soul Food Resturant – Menu with Prices – 1815 W Erwin St, Tyler

You could drive by this place and never realize the deliciousness hiding inside. I think this building was a Dairy Queen about 30 years ago. It’s been several other businesses since. Right now it’s a place you don’t want to miss. Simple food, cooked right. There’s no menu, because selections change daily. You walk in and go up to the steam table. There’s a few entree choices, and several side item choices. Today they had fried chicken, fried catfish, and smothered pork chops for the main course. There was chili mac, mac n cheese, black eyed peas, and boiled cabbage for the side options. For less than $9 you get an entree with two sides and a roll or corn bread. I got the fried chicken, chili mac, and cabbage. It all tastes fresh and homemade because that what it is, fresh and homemade. I could have made a meal on the chili mac and cabbage! ? This is food like my mom cooked, food that I grew up eating. There’s no frills or bells and whistles here. That because it’s not needed. Simple food, simply done right. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Atmosphere is simple, relaxed, and fun. If your tired of the same old cookie cutter big name restaurants here in Tyler then give this place a try. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Calvin?s Roasted Fish And Salads Menu with Prices 2027 Broad St, Augusta

I hadn’t been to this new location for this restaurant. I had Calvin’s food before when his restaurant was in a hotel on the other end of Broad Street. The food was pretty good then and it’s pretty good now!!! My cousin had dined here recently and raved about everything, so I had to come by and check out the new location. I didn’t know what to expect since it had been so long since I had any of Calvin’s food. From the time I entered the restaurant to the time I departed I felt appreciated as a customer and most importantly a human being!!!! You can’t get no better than that with what’s all going on in the world today!! The food menu is pretty extensive here. He has things like chicken, oxtails, meatloaf, liver and onions, Salisbury steak, and so much more. It was so hard to choose what I wanted to eat. It was so many things I wanted to taste. I ordered sweet tea first, and I must say if you don’t like your tea super sweet you wouldn’t like his!!! I call it diabetic tea and I loved every bit of it!!! Calvin himself comes out and waits on each customer. I thought that was such a personal touch. That shows that he really stands behind everything that he puts his name on!!! I chose to order my favorite, Salisbury steak with rice and gravy, black-eyed peas, and cabbage. Everything thing was delicious!!! My mother ordered her favorite, liver and onions, rice and gravy, black-eyed peas, and cabbage. She loved everything on her plate as well. It took a little time for my mother’s food to come out, so to appease us Calvin brought us out two fried chicken wings. That was some pretty good fried chicken!!!! That’s exactly what I’m going to order when I dine here the next time. It had the right amount of flavor and was fried to perfection!!! That chicken made my mother forget she was waiting for her food. It didn’t take too long after we ate the chicken that her food arrived. Everything was on point, I can see why he has had so much success in the food industry for so long!! He make sure that his customers are happy at all costs!!! My mother couldn’t finish her food and he offered her more food, which he gave her. He said he didn’t want her to go home hungry and had spent good money!!! Where else would a restaurant owner do this?!? Most likely NOWHERE!!! Calvin’s customer service is off the scale and his food is just as good!!! I’m adding this place to my go to places to eat!!! I have so many things to try on his menu!!! You don’t come by too many places like this anymore!!!

Cotton Bug Bakery Menu with Prices 14 James Brown Blvd, Augusta

Forgot to get a birthday cake for my co-workers! I called and they said yes they have cakes for immediate pick up. Their cakes are not Walmart/Publix prices. So if your looking for cheap, go somewhere cheap. They do not offer standard cake flavors (vanilla/chocolate). If you are looking for standard cake go somewhere else. If you are looking for amazing quality, taste and ingredients then come here. I got last minute a multi-layer velvet cake and cheesecake. They charged just a few dollars to write on the cake. For the cheesecake, it was amazing, not too sweet and the included strawberry sauce on the side (per my request). The cakes were sooo heavy! I definitely good amazing amount of cake. The red velvet also tasted amazing!

Memaw’s At LG’s Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 4254 Mumford Rd, Macon

Small family business.Donâ??t let the look deter you! The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I ordered the fried pork chop dinner with two sides .I decided on Mac &cheese and rice and gravy. My husband had the beef tips with Mac &cheese and black eyed peas. Everything was well seasoned! My picky three year old loved them Mac&cheese. We also ordered three slices of pound cake to go. They were good as well! The lemonade was very good. Will definitely stop again when traveling through Macon.

Specialty Cakes – Menu with Prices – 1560 Wabash Ave, Springfield

If you want the best cake for your event, check out Specialty Cakes! They offer so much more than just cake but for our wedding we were looking specifically for cake. Cake tasting is probably the most exciting and anticipated event during the planning process! Specialty Cakes delivered with excellent flavor, presentation, easy process, and wonderful workers! Even though we all wanted to go taste more cake, we knew in the first few bites that we were sold. Who says a wedding cake has to be a boring white and chocolate cake? This place offers so many great options. My husband and I couldnâ??t make up our minds, so our wedding cake included 4 different flavors, White, Lemon, Strawberry, and Banana! They also made us an amazing Rumchata adult sheet cake and a Spice/Red Velvet sheet cake for all of us to enjoy! Our guests were incredibly happy with all of the options and raved about the flavor and design of our cake. We could not be happier with our decision on working with Specialty Cakes, they were tremendous with our whole wedding!

Homemade Southern Cuisine – Menu with Prices – 3240, 1706 Main St, Green Bay

Wow! What a hidden gem in Green Bay. My sister and I traveled to Green Bay for a weekend and while we were there we did some research, looking for a unique restaurant for a home cooked meal. With this place we hit the jackpot. The word “Southern” in the name beckoned us and the reviews sealed the deal. It is a little off the beaten path, but definitely worth the short drive from our hotel. The place is owned and operated by the nicest woman I have encountered in a long time. She cooks all of the food from scratch, which includes tasty sides like black eyed peas and mac and cheese. The hand cut fries were our favorite! We split an order and brought one back to the hotel. That’s how good they were! Every dinner comes with 2 sides along with a huge hunk of cornbread which was the best! My sister had the fried pork chops and I had the fried chicken wings and talk about comfort food! The flavor was outstanding and brought back memories of our Sunday Dinners when we were little girls, growing up in North Carolina. The portions are large as you can see by the pictures and the atmosphere and outstanding service were top notch. Skip the chain restaurants and the usual places you might go for lunch or dinner and take a drive to this restaurant. I can promise you the first bite of cornbread will have you smiling and thanking me for my recommendation. One thing is for sure, you won’t leave hungry and you will probably take some cornbread home!

Rise & Grind Cafe – Menu with Prices – 2737 N Doctor M.L.K. Jr Dr, Milwaukee

This is the second time I’ve been to this restaurant. It’s a buffet style brunch restaurant which features scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, grits, breakfast potatoes, macaroni & cheese, collard greens, black eyed peas, rice and baked chicken. Unfortunately, when we came, they were out of grits and low on greens, no problem, they had plenty to eat otherwise. I would advise you to come early, because once they run out of an item, they don’t make anymore. We arrived at around 12:30, we initially planned on going to Coffee Makes You Black, but they were very busy. Do not overlook this place, the food is great and the staff is friendly. Make sure you bring your appetite, because you’ll leave full. There is an emergence of quality sit down restaurant on the north side of Milwaukee which was a rarity some years back. The buffet is only on the weekend, during the weekdays they serve breakfast sandwiches, coffee and juices. My only complaint is getting coffee is a bit clunky, you have to have them pour it out to you from the counter. I’d prefer to get my own coffee through a dispenser. Anyway, I strongly recommend this place, I’ll will become a frequent visitor.

Simply Southern Cafe – Menu with Prices – 3457 McGehee Rd, Montgomery

Been hearing great reviews on this place so I stopped by on yday. The wait was really long (about 30 mins) but they had a live, blues band to pass the time. Couldn’t decide on oxtail plate or ribs plate so I got both and saved one for lunch the next day. The oxtails and rice was divine! Incredibly tender and falling off the bone. The portion was great for the price. I think I got 4-5 oxtails on my plate. The ribs were a little dry and too saucy but still had great flavor. I didn’t care for any of the sides except for the sweet potatoes. They weren’t bad, just not my flavor profile. For sides I had cabbage, dressing, sweet potato casserole, and macaroni. I don’t think that the dressing and macaroni is made from scratch. Its definitely not traditional, southern baked macaroni and cheese/dressing. I’d go back just to eat multiple plates of oxtails and sweet potatoes.

Sweet Life Cakes and Confections – Menu with Prices – 50 Natalie Dr, Raleigh

Amazing Red Velvet cake. My coworker loves red velvet cake and I ordered one from Ginny and it was sooo good. Everyone at the office was in love with the cake and the delicious icing. It’s not just about the great taste but also about the quality of service and this company has it all.
