Located in trendy Williamsburg and serving guests for nearly nine years, a long time when considering the rapid gentrification that turned Brooklyn into Manhattan’s near-equal in terms of dining and rent, it was after another meal that a twenty minute walk found The Blue Stove, its location near I-278 at first seeming a bit distant from other businesses but in reality just 4-blocks from an L Subway stop. Occupying the corner of Graham Avenue and Withers Street with hours beginning at 8am on weekdays or nine on weekends, an all-day affair offering both sweet and savory Pastries in addition to Coffee, Tea and Espresso, The Blue Stove is owned and operated by Rachel McBride Beyers who opened the space in hopes of providing guests the same warm memories she recalled as being baked by her mother throughout the Chef’s childhood. Rustic yet welcoming in décor, the cases and racks all worn with cracked crown molding above and the eponymous enamel stove standing proud on one side, it was shortly after 11am that the compact eatery was found roughly 1/3 full but soon to get busier, a large list of options at first posing some difficulty in deciding what sounded best but eventually yielding six items with some for then and the rest saved for later. Friendly as relates to service, a low-volume Soundtrack of classic rock entertaining patrons as well as staff seen hand-rolling dough in back, it was no more than five minutes after settling the bill that items were boxed and a warmed Slice of Pie presented, the combination of toasted Walnuts, Bourbon and Maple Syrup packing a buttery Crust from top to bottom with far less sticky filling than the South’s often cloyingly sweet Pecan version. Planning to simply snap photos and get a taste for the rest at this point, a fool’s folly as that ‘taste’ quickly escalated to several bites of Carrot Cake that finds its sweetness in Fruit and a thin ribbon of Cream Cheese Frosting, it was showing some restraint and setting aside approximately half that attention turned to an item labeled “Spiced Guava Chess Pie with Orange Crème Fraiche,” each layer individually intense and creamy in its own way but the combination unlike anything ever experienced with sourness melting away to a sweet finish perfumed by Anise. Slowly savoring each bite of the Chess and debating another slice for the road, a line of six patrons the eventual deciding factor in avoiding further endangering hopes of enjoying lunch, it was almost six hours later that three of Chef Beyers Cookies were tasted, the Snickerdoodle a bit dry and disappointing but rife with Cinnamon while the chewy Chocolate Crinkle and house-special Ranger were both quite good, the latter in particular as its Butter content seemed magnified by finishing Salt rather than muted by Oats, Raisins and Chocolate Chips.

Tropical Ice Cream – Menu with Prices – 1236 W 5th St, Santa Ana

BEST DESSERT PLACE EVER. OMFG. When I first came here, there were like long lines of people. Like Cream. Except quality is better! I kinda expected the place to be a little more bigger and spacious. So oh. Then I ordered the blue velvet cake slice and vanilla bean chocolate macaron ice cream sandwich. They didn’t have red velvet macaron sandwich at the time so I had to get the vanilla one. The macaron sandwich is soooo good!!! So much better than Cream! The blue velvet cake slice is the one that totally blew me away. OMG. I have never tasted something so good in my life and never seen such a thing. Who in the world invented the flavor blue velvet?! I LOVEEEE IT!! I’m totally coming here again whenever I’m down in LA ? Sweets are my expertise

VilleVelo Bake Shop – Menu with Prices – 1465 NE Prescott St, Portland

Have you ever had something so tasty that you can’t stop thinking about it and crave having it again? Well, this is the problem created by VilleVelo Bake Shop. I stopped in here last spring while on a break of the little homes tour. VilleVelo is truely a tiny bakery – with lots of choices. I selected a quick snack for the road, and also picked up a few other items to take home for later as I had company from out of town. Over the next few days we tried everything and each was delicious, but what stands out most was the wonderful slice of german chocolate cake. This was no ordinary slice, It was a big slice, big enough for my house guest and I to share for the next several days. Remarkable was that it remained fresh tasting all that time. Even more remarkable was the wonderful flavor and texture, as the cake was moist and smooth, the frosting was creamy and cruncy fromthe nuts and even a little chewy from all the coconut, with just the right chocolate, coconut and nut flavor, with none being too strong or sweet. Now for the BIG problem with little VilleVelo; It’s their changing menu! Particularly that they feature a different sort of cake everyday, where they should instead be makign me my german chocolate cake!!! I have been back several times in my quest of another slice of heaven, but have not hit it on the right day. Hey VilleVelo, please make some more of your great cake!

Bakerbots Baking – Menu with Prices – 205 Delaware Ave, Toronto

This place is one of our favourite bakeries! I love their everything cookie – it’s the perfect combination of crispy and chewy and a fantastic sweet and salty mix with peanut butter chips, pretzels, and chocolate chips. The best cookie! My husband loves their chocolate cake. Whenever we’re downtown we tend to always stop by here for a slice of cake and one (or two) cookies to go. Their cream puffs are great as well and they’re also known for their homemade ice cream sandwiches. Their pumpkin spice cake is also amazing but seasonal! Super small space with only 2 small tables of 2 inside. There are benches outside in the summer time for you to sit and enjoy as well.

Soul Food Chess House – Menu with Prices – 1075 Broad St, Newark

And the award for The Best Fried Shrimp goes to….. “Soul Food Chess House!!!!” I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, sometimes the best cooked food is in “The Hood” and that rings oh so true with Soul Food Chess House. You won’t get Maitre D Service here, but what you will get is the best the darn Fried Fish & Shrimp outside of Chateau A La Cheryl (that’s my house, lol). I’ve come here so many times and have tried the fried whiting, fried shrimp, chicken wings, collard greens, Mac & cheese, potato salad and cabbage. What I can say about Soul Food Chess house that keeps me coming back is the consistency of the Shrimp. No matter what day of the week or hour of the day, the shrimp is always consistent. Whenever I have a taste for fried shrimp I have my go-to spots that I frequent, but they have all proven to be hit or miss at times; but with Soul Food Chess House they never disappoint. Now let’s talk about the Fried Whiting. They cooked it with just the right amount of crispness & just the right amount of crunch, I love it, although they were a little heavy handed with the salt, it was honestly the best Fried Fish of any of the Soul Food Spots in NJ that I have tried. Though the potato salad is good, it’s not great, but has potential to greatness! The reason it lacks greatness is because they’re missing the eggs, potato salad without the eggs is what I call a shortcut; while taking a shortcut is good, it doesn’t make for greatness, however, Soul Food Chess House does make pretty good potato salad overall , add those eggs and greatness will have been achieved. So until then I’ll keep them at 4 stars. But the Shrimp gets 5 Stars hands down!

Graeter’s Ice Cream – Menu with Prices – 836 Euclid Ave, Lexington

Amazing ice cream that is super creamy and rich in flavor! After my first visit here, I knew I would be back soon because the ice cream was delicious. When we first walked in the staff members greeted us and offered us samples of any flavors we wanted to try. They also explained all of the seasonal items and different flavors. About half of the menu has their signature chocolate chips in them. While deciding on our orders, we also noticed a large case of ice cream cakes and to go pints available for purchase. I ended up deciding on the black raspberry chocolate chip and my boyfriend had peanut butter chocolate chip. Both options were great and I can definitely see why the black raspberry is the top selling flavor! The price for one scoop is around $4 which seems a bit on the higher end. Buying a pint of the ice cream at Kroger might be a more economical option, but nothing beats the hand dipped ice cream here! Another thing to note is that there are several tables inside and a few picnic tables out front. There is a parking garage, but make sure you have an employee verify your ticket so the fee is waived. Also, if you download the Graeter’s app you can get rewards for all of your purchases. You even get a free scoop when you first download the app (no purchase required)!

Crust Almighty Pizzeria – Menu with Prices – 46 S 27th St, Pittsburgh

Cash only. There’s a lot of mediocre pizza in Pittsburgh. This place is well above the average. Best part is the sauce, not overly sweet like so many places in town, here you actually taste tomato and seasoning. Really, you can tell that quality ingredients are used across the board. Thin crust, appropriate amount of cheese, and not a grease bomb. This is the kind of pizza where you can “accidentally” slam 4 slices and not suffer intestinal mutiny for the rest of the day. Slice I got off the top was perfectly crisp as well, though the to-go pie may have been pulled a bit early as it was slightly doughy and had some serious flop that wasn’t present in the slice. Still, the pie I brought folks disappeared quickly with no complaints heard. I’ve visited twice, and both times I’ve had to figure out what on the menu could actually be ordered at the time (you can make small pies but not large pies?). Also, for a place that advertises selling pizza by the slice, they don’t seem to have slices up very often. These are things that I can chalk up to being brand new though, simple fact is this is the best NY style pie you’re going to find in the south side, and one of the better I’ve had around Pittsburgh.

Chess Park Tavern – Menu with Prices – 231 N Brand Blvd, Glendale

I had been waiting to go to this newly opened restaurant in downtown Glendale and finally had the chance to check it out on Friday. We didn’t have reservations and were going somewhere else but since we walked by Chess Park we decided to try our luck. Both the interior and exterior are beautifully decorated. Very rustic and chic with lots of market lights outside which gives it a very laid back yet romantic vibe. They also had a live band playing all the way to the end of the patio. When we walked in the hostess stand was empty. We waited a few minutes before someone greeted us. Once we were greeted it was by a lovely woman who asked if we wanted inside or outside seating. She told us only the shared bar table was available but as we walked outside to our luck a couple of tables had already opened up so we grabbed one of them. Right away they brought out a plate of chips with a pink sauce. It was delicious although there were a few soggy chips mixed in with fresh crispy ones. That’s a pet peeve of mine, to have soft and soggy chips or fries mixed in with fresh ones. Not long after our waitress Kirstin (hope I’m speaking her name correctly) approached us. She was lovely and very polite. We asked for some still water, and I asked her for a cocktail she recommendation and she suggested their newest cocktail. I didn’t even look at the menu and trusted her recommendation and went with that. She did mention it’s purple and very pretty. We also ordered a side of truffle fries, the Chess Park Original burger and the Chess Park OG flat bread. We admired the outdoors and the live music playing while some guests were dancing. About 15 minutes later and a second plate of chips later hen first came out our truffle fries, about 5 minutes after that the burger and about 5 minutes after the flatbread. Everything looked great. I was however disappointed looking at the flatbread. It looked like a pizza you would order on game day, it was just in a shape of a rectangular flatbread. I ate a slice of it and it tasted like boxed pizza as well. I was disappointed. Btw, all the while there was no sign of my cocktail. I took bite of the burger and it was great. The meat was tasty and the special sauce on top was delicious. The fries were perfectly seasoned as well. Still no sign of my cocktail. Kirstin came by to check on us and at this point we were done with our meal so I asked her if she could please cancel the drink but she insisted that the bartenders were “making sure the drink is perfect” and that is why it’s taking a bit long. So we waited some more and she came back with the cocktail and said it would be off the bill but she still wanted me to try it. It was very kind of her to do that. The drink really was pretty as she mentioned but was very strong to the point that my husband had to drink the rest. It wasn’t enjoyable for me. Overall, this place has a very beautiful and chic atmosphere and ambiance. The live band is fun. But the service is slow and the food we ordered were average. Nothing special.

Blue Ice Gelato – Menu with Prices – 6878 E Sunrise Dr Suite 140, Tucson

I stopped in for the first time yesterday, and I’m so in love with this gelato. The shop is simple and small, but the gelato is excellent and overall experience here was really great. The man behind the counter (I’m sorry to say I didn’t get his name) was enthusiastic and encouraged us to try nearly every flavor in the case — something I always want to do, but never feel like I can! The gelatos are so delicious, absolutely bursting with flavor. There were a bunch of chocolate flavors, but the hands-down best was the “Mint to Be”: a chocolate mint with a subtle orange flavor. I could eat that every day and never get sick of it. Other chocolate standouts included the Chocolate Amaretto (dark chocolate with almond), Italian Tagalong (chocolate peanut butter), and Gianduia (chocolate hazelnut). Other flavors that wowed me included the blueberry cardamom, the vegan(!!!) sweet potato and coconut (it tasted like the best pumpkin pie), and the fig mascarpone. We’re told that the flavors change on a regular basis, so I’ll definitely be stopping in again to enjoy Blue Ice again!

Vincenzo’s Pizza – Menu with Prices – 168-19 Union Tpke, Flushing

Vincenzo’s Pizza is now one of my new favorites! Staff was awesome! Really friendly and friendly and kind. The food was incredible. I had a white slice and a buffalo chicken slice with a side of blue cheese. I’m a huge fan of white pizza and this place does it right! The subtle seasoning in it was perfect. The hot sauce and chicken in the buffalo chicken slice were also perfect. I like the chicken to be super tender and the sauce to be hot but not too peppery or too hot. Everything about this slice was amazing. Chicken fell apart and was super moist. Had just the right amount of the toppings, not way too much like some places do. Loved the food from here. Thanks guys!!

Kaffee Haus – Menu with Prices – e, 1599 S St Francis Dr, Santa Fe

Drove by this place on the way into the square and decided to stop by. It’s really adorable and the barista working was very polite and asked if my drink was good or bad after I tried it. I ordered a “chunky monkey” which was a mixture of chocolate and banana and any choice of dairy or dairy substitute. I ordered mine without the milk and added 2 shots of espresso. To be honest I really enjoyed it. The banana is hard to taste over the chocolate but it was good, not too sweet and not overbearing with the chocolate. They have pastries as well as breakfast items and a couple of tables on the side if you’ve got time to sit down and enjoy the day.

Stella’s Pizza – Menu with Prices – 10890 S Eastern Ave #108, Henderson

Great taste and great service. Visited Stella’s for their grand opening as I have enjoyed being a customer to their original business Diced Kitchen. While it still maintains the same great taste of Diced, Stella’s seems to be a dive for the business into more “sinful” food rather than the fit-conscious meals offered at Diced. Their carnivore pizza and ranch chicken pizza both prove this with the delightfully unapologetic ingredients and sauces, making them deliciously primal meals. While on the other hand, the Blue cheese with olives pizza “black and blue” proved that they can also do a higher delicacy pizza to appeal to whichever pallette you are looking for. All three of these were my favorite pizzas offered, all excellent on their own way. Not to downplay the rest of their menu from which many items such as the Caprese pizza and even their standard pepperoni pizza were excellent in their own right. I am glad to see Diced expand with Stella’s pizza. I am a huge fan of their customer service driven business which is one of the reasons I highly recommend them. Truly excellent customer service is hard to come by so consistently but both Diced and Stella’s provide it in abundance with a personable touch.
