I was making time for a work appointment and while driving I saw this place. Nothing fancy, maybe is not the best place to stay to chill with friends (I actually decided to take my snacks to go) but what incredible flavors and surprising combinations! Everything that I ordered was so good and fresh, this was my first time trying ¨pepilocos¨ and even though they were very different from what I´m used to, I loved them!! On top of the good food, the owner was very nice and explained the menu. Expect spicy and acidic (mexican) flavors.

Hot Pot & BBQ & SakeBomb – Menu with Prices – 937 E Broadway Rd, Tempe

Stopped in for a late night snack with my fiancé to YZs hot pot. The owner and his wife were working, and they were so kind! The interior was very clean and well appointed. We ordered 2 sake bombs, and then asked some questions about the menu. The owner graciously explained all of the items we asked about and told us he had a few different ways of cooking the bbq skewers . He promptly went to the kitchen and prepared our meal himself. When the food arrived he had thoughtfully cooked us extra skewers, some sweet and some spicy since we hadn’t given him a very clear answer as to what we preferred. Each of the skewers were delicious ( chicken, steak, and shrimp) still a little hungry we ordered a peppered beef dish. The flavors were out of this world! Savory spicy and a hint of sweetness at the end. He brought us out two personal sides of rice as well. Overall we will definitely be returning. The service was great and I loved the dedication of the owner to the quality and flavors of the dishes.

IX-CHEL Frozen Delights – Menu with Prices – 4968 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago

Absolutely amazing! The place is clean, the decor is inviting but not overbearing, and the options aren’t overwhelming but enough. As soon as you walk in you feel as though you are about to eat fancy gelato with insane price tags but nothing can be further than the truth. The gelato is amazing because it’s fresh and homemade. Flavors that are usually too sweet (birthday cake) are perfect and refreshing. Let me backtrack a bit, I ordered two scoops in a cup, hazelnut and Mexican vanilla. Both were delicious but the vanilla was out of this world (I should have tasted it before). The Mexican vanilla bursts with flavor but none overpower the other. The owner say me and my kiddos enjoying the gelato so he offered us a small portion (for free) of birthday cake. My kids instantly wanted it. This is a great addition to the neighborhood and a great place to make summer memories. I highly recommend this place!

La Michoacana Knoxville – Menu with Prices – 8044 Ray Mears Blvd suite 103, Knoxville

We were curious to try the brightly colored mangonadas featured on the business’s website. If you’ve ever had a Vero Mango Lollipop, the mangonadas are basically the lollipop recreated as a dessert with mango sorbet, chili powder, and fresh mango. We enjoyed them, even though they weren’t what we expected (in a good way). If you aren’t a fan of spicy food, you should go with a different menu option because this dessert has some serious heat! La Michoacana is most definitely 100% authentic. The snacks and treats are not Americanized at all, which we loved. It was fun to try something new and different. They have a huge variety of creamy popsicle flavors such as cheesecake, strawberries & cream, and coconut. Lots of ice cream flavors as well. My 3 year old loved his popsicle with big chunks of fresh fruit in it. The cafe is discretely located in a strip mall area. The employees were super friendly and helped us order even though we were out of our element. Most of the menu is in Spanish, but flavors are listed in English as well. There is seating inside and outside. If you’re in the mood for a treat, be adventurous and try something new! La Michoacana has great Mexican Snacks!

Pelican’s SnoBalls – Menu with Prices – 6011 E Virginia Beach Blvd, Norfolk

If you’re looking for a seriously delicious snowball, snow cone, then look no further. The flavors are abound and the combinations absolutely mouth watering. Well worth it! I got the “Butterfly Bliss” and The flavor combinations birthday cake and cotton candy with a sour medium sized gummy. O M G. But you don’t have to stop there…there are so many flavors you can come up with your own special concoction. My son 6 and my niece 8 are convinced they should have them for breakfast lunch and dinner. I am actually no longer considering snow cones for just the summer season…thanks to Pelicans! Soooooo yummmm!

Hutkay Fusion Menu with Prices 3022 Packard St, Ann Arbor

Hutkay Fusion (formerly Hut-K Chaats) is reopening! The owner has returned after needing to return to India for the last year. Me and a few friends found this place recently and had a great experience. The owner has a Ph.D in food science and it shows with the ways he’s able to combine different flavors and unique ingredients. All the foods are vegetarian and most are vegan so it’s friendly for everyone! I got the Shanu Chaat that was recommended and it had colocasia leaves with spices chickpeas, potatoes, and peas. It was topped with some spicy sauce for a delicious combination of flavors. The chaat is a great combo of sweet, salty, spicy and crunchy flavors/textures. When you order, you have the option of setting your spice level from 1-10. I found it endearing that they set the “michigan” spice level as 3, “Indian” spice level at 5-6, and “thai” spice level at 9+! The owner also explained that colocasia leaves are actually inflammatory if eaten raw, but safe to eat when cooked (fun fact!). Hutkay is a family owned restaurant and the owner is super friendly. He offered us all a sample of the chaat before we ordered because we were new and walked us through the menu. I can tell he has a deep love for food and is proud of the menu that he’s created. I’m excited to come back and try some of the other dishes! My girlfriend got the Paneer Tikka Wrap Roll and it was also amazing.

Roxie’s Tacos – Menu with Prices – 1135 Broadway, Boulder

Excellent and unique fusion of Indian and Mexican! Yes, I know how weird that sounds, but it works. I arrived about fifteen miniutes after Roxie’s opened. The young man at the counter asked me if I had been there before and I told him I had not. He enthusiastically explained the menu, and then recommended that since it was my first visit I should try the tacos since I could sample all the different flavors. I tried the red curry chicken taco and the saag taco, as well as an iced chai. I really enjoyed the red curry. It was a perfect blend of spicy and savory flavors and the tortillas balanced it out perfectly. The saag was just okay. It was exactly what it sounded like. If you put some saag on a tortilla with fix-ins and ate it, you would have Roxie’s saag taco. I probably wouldn’t have ordered the saag option had it not been for the recommendation of the employee, but I asked him what was good, and I’m always down for a new culinary adventure. The chai was super-spicy, but it was very good nevertheless. I will most definitely make a return trip to Roxie’s Tacos if I’m on University Hill in Boulder, to try some of their other offerings. However, I probably wouldn’t make a trip to the Hill just for the restaurant.

Funky Elephant Menu with Prices 1313 Ninth St, Berkeley

Tried out a new Thai place in Berkeley! It was definitely a funky place with interesting decor and outside tables, but a little tight and small inside. Nice little outdoor area right next to Philz Coffee. Green Papaya Salad ($12) – Spicy!!! Default they put in 3 chilis and we put in just 1 chili and it was definitely spicy. At one point the spices came up my nose LOL. Couldn’t really differentiate the chili from the peanuts. It had a lot of flavor but it would’ve been better if the Papaya was colder(?). It might’ve made the salad more fresh. Grilled Beef Short Ribs ($18) – Good. I thought it came with rice (other yelp pictures), but came with no rice. Ordered jasmine rice ($2) and it was blue, which was pretty interesting. Again, a lot of flavor going on. Pad Thai Old Skool ($15) – Lots of sauce and flavor overall. Good pad Thai but not the best I ever had. Size is definitely on the smaller side. Ask for chili on the side or no chili if you don’t like spicy. It seems really spicy. Soft Serve Ice Cream Thai Tea ($6) – Nice! It’s not super milky and reminds me of the chick fil a soft serve texture (?). Nice light Thai tea flavor. Overall, had a nice experience! Apparently, this place is super authentic and they do things spicy (overheard the waiter explaining to another table – service was good but could’ve been better if they explained about their restaurant and food to us too. I had no idea it was supposed to be spicy!). The flavors were pretty crazy, but I think overall there was just too much flavor going on that it was kinda overwhelming. There wasn’t anything simple to cleanse my palate. I’m not Thai, so I guess I’m not used to all the flavors, but usually at other Thai places, I don’t walk away feeling overwhelmed. I might need a juice cleanse lol. I wouldn’t really recommend to my family/friends just because we have similar tastes, but would recommend to anyone who wants to try authentic Thai food with lots of FLAVOR and lots of spice!

Half Pint Café – Menu with Prices – 537 SE Ash St #108, Portland

Unlike most of the food/drink establishments I visited while in Portland, this wasn’t planned at all. I dropped off our rental car pretty early and then decided I wanted some coffee, so I pulled up yelp and went to the nearest highly rated coffee shop, and I’m glad I did, because I was extremely pleased with it. There’s nothing fancy about the place, it’s just a little coffee shop, but their coffee is top notch, as is their service, as are their prices. I usually get a fancy sugary coffee drink, and they certainly have those, most notably as far as the sort of thing I particularly like drinking, they have a Mexican mocha with a cinnamon and pepper chocolate syrup they apparently make in-house, which I ordered, and then immediately changed my mind and said scratch that, I’ll just have a regular espresso instead – partially because I figured I’m in the capitol of good coffee and I should try to learn to like straight-up bean flavor, and partially because, admittedly, I’d just gone crazy spending money on foodie stuff right and left all week and I liked the idea of saving a couple bucks. The guy working there (not sure if it was the owner? I feel like it may have been) was super friendly and happy to let me do that, even though it was cheaper. Then, as I was sitting there sipping my very good espresso (though admittedly I think I’m just not a pure coffee person – I could tell it was quality, but I just can’t totally get into it), he surprised me with a mini cup of Mexican hot chocolate, because he could tell I was so conflicted and wanted to let me try both of them. Totally not necessary, but certainly appreciated. Unsurprisingly, it was totally delicious, and if I’m ever back in the area and want some coffee (likelier than you might think, given that I have now totally fallen in love with basically everything about Portland), this will be one of the first places I think of, and their Mexican mocha one of the first drinks. Was just the right amount sweet, and just the right amount spicy. So good!

Happy Taco Feliz – Menu with Prices – 12553 Main St N, Jacksonville

Absolutely Awesome and just what this little family from Central California needed in our lives! Really AUTHENTIC food, cooked just like it’s cooked back home with fresh ingredients and FRESH TORTILLAS/BREAD! This is street food at it’s best. My kids ate until they looked pregnant with little tummy’s pooched out, then got angry when they found out daddy took left overs to work for lunch! How to I explain what it’s like to need west coast style Mexican food, in the land of Tex-Mex and white washed Mexican food? It was horrible and sad, I had all but given up on Mexican food not prepared at home… Until I ate at Happy Taco Felis… All is right in our families world, and we are at peace once again. Thank you for having this food truck, no need for a fancy restaurant, keep it just the way it is.

Ali’i Poke – Downtown Indy – Menu with Prices – 910 W 10th St #4, Indianapolis

This was my first poke experience, and it did not disappoint. As I used to work down the street for the past few years, I had always wanted to try it but never got around to it. I took my wife for lunch today, and was completely blown away. I already had high expectations after reading the reviews, however all was exceeded. I went with the pele bowl (spicy) with spicy tuna and shrimp. Additionally, I added avocado and creamy miso sauce. The flavors were great, and man was it spicy. The fresh jalapeño really had a nice heat to it, as did the wasabi. I love that you can add as much or as little of each topping, and all of the flavors together were perfect. The spicy tuna was great, as was the marinated tuna (from my wife’s dish). The prices are great for what you get, regular is about 9.50 and large is 13.50. I ordered with my stomach and went with the large. While I was able to finish it all, I would’ve been more than stuffed had I just ordered the regular. Overall, my first poke experience went above and beyond my expectations. I will definitely be coming back for more.

Los Alamos Cocina – Menu with Prices – 1667 Summit St, Kansas City

I love hole in the wall places when looking for food. We were in the mood for a Mexican breakfast and decided to try this place out. Walked in and was greeted by the staff who were so friendly and patient with helping us to decide what we wanted. We started with complimentary chips and two different kinds of salsa (a green and red one). Both were a unique flavor than the normal salsa I’ve tried but were tasty. We also decided to get some guacamole which was made with super fresh avocados and was heaven in your mouth. I ordered a chorizo burrito with added rice and beans. The chorizo was delicious and the added rice and beans to my burrito was the cherry on top. I also ordered a small menudo. The spice on the menudo was just right and so full of flavor! I had ordered pan instead of tortillas and even that was amazing. Boyfriend had a 2 meat plate with what I believe was spicy Puerco Asada and Chile Verde. He was impressed which says a lot because he is picky with his Mexican food. Baby sis ordered a bacon and egg burrito that she enjoyed. I loved this family owned restaurant. I very much felt like I was at home with good Mexican food! Will definitely come back if I’m ever in Missouri again.

The Original Taco Stop – Menu with Prices – 161 N McKinley St Ste 101, Corona

I live in Boston. While Boston has great regional foods, Mexican food is not one of them. In fact, I can count on one finger the place I’ve been to in Boston that was acceptable. But this review is not about that other place. This is about The Original Taco Stop. I discovered this place about 2 years ago when I was visiting my aunt who lives in Corona. As Mexican food is always my first stop, even before KBBQ, May its reign last forever, I asked my cousin for a great Mexican place. She said uh…there aren’t any. WHAT?!?! I’d expect that type of answer in the frozen wastelands of Boston, but not in SoCal!!! So I turned to Yelp and found this place. I’m not going into details on the food. You’ll either like it or you won’t. I LOVE it. I always get the lengua burrito -wet- half red and half green ($1 more but who cares!). The hubby gets a carne asade burrito and my sis’ half Filipino half Mexican bf said the carne asade tacos were some of the best he ever had. The sauces at the sauce bar are super basic – mild green and spicy, they have lots of pickled carrots and jalapeños (I call it Mexican kimchi ) and they also have fresh limes and radishes. Whatever you get, make sure to order a large horchata, order one for your friend, because you won’t want to share. I miss you already, OTS
