Best coffee in the Downtown Crossing neighborhood, by far! For the six years I’ve worked in DTX this little space on Bromfield St. has hosted two coffee shops that immediately became my favorites. Boston Brewin operated here for 7 years until it suddenly closed at the end of 2018. It took a few months into 2019 for Nine Bar to open, but no disappointment at all when it did. The proprietor Erik brews Gracenote coffee and serves two blends daily, which he rotates every week. The coffee is awesome. Always fresh…always hot…never bitter…and very consistent from day to day…week to week. I’ll leave it to others to comment on the espresso and espresso drinks as I’m more of a straight up coffee drinker, but suffice it to say a coffee here with a shot of espresso (called the Red-Eye when it was Boston Brewin) is the bomb! Nine Bar also offers iced coffee, tea drinks, a variety of breakfast pastries and healthy snacks. I highly recommend Nine Bar if you need a quick caffeine fix and bite to eat on the go.

Espresso Vivace – Menu with Prices – 227 Yale Ave N, Seattle

As the Seattle stereotype goes… there’s a coffee shop on every corner … and there’s a Starbucks on every half block. That’s essentially true. If you’re a coffee drinker, this city really is your dream come true. I have now come to Seattle 4 times in the last year and it’s allowed me to explore certain parts of the city really well. Because I stay in the same location each time I go, I have developed some “regular” locations that I really enjoy including Espresso Vivace. I’m fairly new to the coffee scene so I take each visit to a new cafe as an opportunity to broaden my horizons. I have now been to a fair number of places and have really enjoyed becoming a regular coffee drinker. On our first visit to the area, we dropped by Espresso Vivace because it was close to the Springhill Suites in SLU. Located right across from REI, there’s a lot of foot traffic coming through this little corner that they sit on. As such, the mornings (even times before 8AM), there can be a little bit of a line. That being said, the longest I have ever had to wait was about 10 min. They have a wide array of coffee drinks but I frequently find myself going back to my usual: either an iced americano or an espresso. Both of these drinks I feel really highlight the beans they use. Their flavors are complex, bold and low acid… just the way I like it.

Organic Man Coffee Trike – Menu with Prices – 4501 McPherson Rd #9, Laredo

Cute little independent shop. I had high hopes for the coffee. Unfortunately the barista serving me, while very friendly and pleasant, simply didn’t have the level of training that one would expect of a dedicated coffee shop. When I was initially asked “what size?”, I asked if they used a standard “doppio” or 2 ozs of espresso, she said that their “12 oz cappuccino” came with only a single shot of espresso….most places, a doppio or 2 oz shot of espresso is served as standard, bringing a cappuccino to 6 ozs total (2 ea of espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam))….so no idea how they get to a cappuccino with a single 1 oz shot of espresso to 12 ozs……so I asked for a “doppio”. My first “cappuccino” that I ordered was a latte (predominantly milk, maybe 3x the qty of espresso). She was pleasant enough to make a second one after me asking for equal qty of milk to espresso…..but that one was simply average in flavor. Not sure what roasting house the beans come from (she didn’t know), but the flavor was pretty lackluster. Also, for this cappuccino, I was charged with tax, $6.12. Unfortunately, overall, average at best.

Kings Peak Coffee Roasters – Menu with Prices – 412 S 7th W Suite 140, Salt Lake City

I really wanted to like this place. It?s a lovely space and the barista was very friendly, unfortunately the coffee we had was terrible. I had a macchiato, and instead of being an espresso shot marked with a dash of steamed milk, it was a full glass of milk with a splash of espresso. My partner had an americano and the espresso was under extracted and sour. Based on the other reviews of this place, I want to believe the bad drinks were just an anomaly, but they were bad enough we won?t be returning to find out.

Rob?s Brewpoint – Menu with Prices – 2365 Northside Dr, San Diego

They have a great list of drinks to choose from, and they have their own house made syrups & caramel that are amazing!! I’ve been here a good number of times now, and I have to confidently say that their drinks are consistent delicious and do NOT taste like overly burnt coffee (like another chain place I know of but will not name…). Also, you need to check out their “Go nuts for Donuts” Friday’s! The stuff they have….omg I wish I could eat em all! Until recently, I wasn’t much of a coffee drinker so I when I say their coffee tastes great, I really mean it haha! The location is a nice little place to sit down and chill, and Rob & the baristas are cool, fun & friendly!

Anthem Coffee & Tea – Point Ruston – Menu with Prices – 5005 Main St #105, Tacoma

I was very excited to see an anthem coffee open at Point Ruston. I was even happier when I decided to venture out and try their dirty chai with soy. Essentially it’s chai, soy, and espresso shots. It sounds a little crazy, but it’s super delicious! It is actually my new favorite thing at any coffee shop now. I love that they have these creative drinks, and that I found my new favorite, but I have found that the last two times I have gone there, they haven’t been consistent. Last week, we ordered a mocha and a dirty chai and both were extremely milky. It was hard to taste any coffee or chai. I’m not sure if the espresso shots were made poorly or the measurements were wrong, but they just weren’t good. Also, the coffee is rarely very hot. We gave Anthem another try a few days ago. I really do like the flavor of their coffee and just want our drinks to be like they were when we first ordered them. This last time when I ordered, they asked me if I wanted vanilla or spicy chai. I have never been asked this, and didn’t know what to pick, so I picked vanilla, but I think it was the spicy chai that I like. Maybe some people ask for your preference and other people just make it, I’m not sure. However, consistency is really important. I really want to keep going to Anthem and getting my new found drink, but I want it hot, the espresso shots made well, and the same chai used every time. My partner just wants his mocha with well-made shots, milk, a balanced amount of chocolate, and to get it hot. We will give it another try for sure, but I really hope this next time goes better.

Coffee Guy Cafe – Menu with Prices – 6700 N Davis Hwy, Pensacola

The Coffee Guy Cafe is AMAZING!!! Large, open atmosphere with AWESOME baristas and customer service!!! As a tea drinker, for years I was limited to Starbucks for my varied tea drinks. No longer! The Coffee Guy is closer to my business, and I can just walk over for goodies! The CHAI tea latte, LONDON FOG latte (with Earl Grey or Jasmine Green), and the MATCHA GREEN tea latte, all with soymilk, of course, are my faves!!! The oatmeal, soups (especially the chicken and wild rice), and chicken salad (better than Fresh Market’s) are delish!! I want to try the mini Belgian waffles!!! They look and smell AMAZING!! The chocolate, espresso cake is a super charged, appeased chocolate-craving, delight!!! Even though I’m not a coffee drinker, I LOVE coffee foods, and that cake does not disappoint!!! Gennessi is super sweet, amazing, and always remembers my preferences!!! Blake is the same and so full of personality, and super, super sweet! Everyone here is AWESOME, but bad for me, that I don’t remember their names! Luckily, she is here, while I’m writing this review!! Otherwise, others would be mentioned by name! I ALWAYS look forward to seeing the friendly baristas!!!

Halo Espresso Bar – Menu with Prices – 3024 Hurontario St, Mississauga

I hate doing this. As someone who works in “specialty coffee,” I don’t like rating other shops – especially negatively. I’m always on the look out for new specialty coffee shops because coffee is always a learning experience and an adventure. And I believe in supporting independent “specialty coffee” shops. I want to be at shops that not only pulls amazing espresso shots, but that the baristas show passion in their coffee. I was really excited to visit, having seen it on Instagram. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in Halo – a place that brands itself as a “specialty coffee” shop on Instagram. I have now been there twice, because I thought I’d give them another chance. While today’s visit was better, Halo has ultimately let me down. Coffee shops need to be able to dial in their espresso shots – meaning that their espresso is calibrated to bring out a balance of flavour. The first time, the shot was so bitter that I couldn’t finish it. The second time was much better, but still very sour. A shop’s espresso doesn’t have to be completely perfect – coffee is always a battle to find the perfect flavour. But this was just poor quality. The staff on my first visit was quite cold, but the barista that served me today was quite nice. They weren’t very passionate about coffee though. That love for coffee really goes a long way for a coffee shop. This was not a place that was serious about their coffee. It showed in the staff’s interactions with me, and the quality of the espresso shot. It’s ok for a shop to be mediocre in its coffee. But I expected much better from a shop that brands themselves as “Mississauga’s own independent specialty coffee shop”. I don’t like posting negative reviews, but Halo gets a thumbs down from me.

Beans & Brews Coffeehouse Menu with Prices 6520 S Eisenman Rd, Boise

Came here the first time and by the name I thought they have coffee and beer. Very friendly service! Nice and clean coffee shop. They do have Wi-Fi but it’s secured and you need to ask for the code. I ordered a large latte 24 oz. Which could use another shot of espresso, I wasn’t offered one so I assumed it should be OK. But then I was asked how it is I got an extra shot ? They however put 1,2 or 3 shots depending on size. I purchased one Espresso Fritalia and test it myself. I tried a burrito but all their food is pre-made and is then reheated so the burrito didn’t live up to my expectations. Their bagels and ciabatta looked better, I’ll try that next time. They also have a nice selection of coffee for purchase. I particularly like their grading by flavor, body and acidity, that’s very helpful especially for me since I’m roasting coffee too. It would be nice if they would offer something fresh made, salad, baguette with ham and cheese, soup, chili or similar.

Buon Giorno Coffee – Menu with Prices – 915 Florence St, Fort Worth

Love everything about Buon Giorno. I’ve been coming here for years and will keep coming back. I usually come for the coffee and rarely have their pastries, but the pastries I’ve had are very good, especially the almost croissants! As far as coffee goes, I’m an espresso guy, so that’s mostly what this review is about. Oh, except the smoothies. Whaaat!? The raspberry smoothie is the best ever! Simply put, BG’s espresso roasts are the best in town. They may not be supplying their beans to every other business in town, but they really know what they’re doing. I’ve experienced all four of their espresso blends numerous times, and I like them all in varying degrees. Autunno is my favorite, followed by Inverno and Primavera, then Estate (the boldest and oiliest) last. You really can’t go wrong, as they usually have Autunno, Inverno, or Primavera in their espresso grinder. Buon Giorno’s baristas know what they’re doing, and their staff is always kind and accommodating. I come in once a week to buy whole beans (for brewing espresso at home), and they are quick, happy, and personable. Even though I’ve been “home-barista-ing” it for several years, their espressos and cappuccinos always turn out perfect. Though I like the atmosphere in some other FW coffee shops, BG’s atmosphere is very warm and inviting. If I want some quiet time or just one-on-one time with my wife, BG is always our first choice. Wanna bring the kids in, too? We bring our three every once in a while, and they love the pastries and smoothies. They enjoy feeling welcomed in a “big people” establishment. To each his own, but as far as coffee shops go in the Worth, BG is at the top of my list.

Fulton Street Coffee – Menu with Prices – 2015 Tuolumne St, Fresno

Just to put it simply, I drive 30+ minutes from Visalia to Fresno just for Fulton Street and drive straight back. They use V60’s for pour overs, being able to bring out more of the brightness in the coffee and their lattes don’t disappoint, their mochas are amazing and for those of you guys normally gravitating towards sweeter drinks I’d recommend having the cafe con leche. The cafe con leche is just like a regular latte but has a cinnamon infused simple syrup. Their espresso is delicious and have never had a shot not dialed in correctly from them. This wouldn’t be one of the best places to sit down and do homework, but it’s perfect to sit down and enjoy your cup of coffee with or without a friend. Their customer service is adequate, I have not had a bad experience nor a particularly out of this world experience with their customer service. They can take a little bit of a longer time to get your drink out, but just know the wait is well worth it!

Blue Oak Coffee Roasting Menu with Prices 1717 20th St, Bakersfield

I cannot believe that I have not posted a review for this wonderful place! I have come here several times, and I am always wowed by what I encounter. The baked goods are some of the best and most creative that I have ever had. Today I had The apple tart, which is my most favorite thing on the menu. It has a flaky crust, and a firm buttery center full of sliced apples with a very subtle lemon undertone. The texture is soft on the inside and buttery and crispy on the outside. I always buy one when I visit whether I am hungry or not! They also have a series of boozy cookies: my favorite is the Cabernet chocolate that is dusted with sea salt. Divinely sophisticated. I am not a coffee drinker but I do like the hot cocoa with a shot of espresso. They have several varieties of tea, which is better than other coffee places with usually limit their choices to around 4. Please come in and support this local business. You will thank me later.
