HIDDEN GEM ALERT! I’m not cheese connoisseur, nor have I been to many other specialty cheese places, but I’m thrilled about my experience at Harry’s Cheese and Cold Cuts. Let’s just say after several disappointing and expensive charcuterie boards from various restaurants, my boyfriend and I decided to make our own. I did a little Yelp research and found Harry’s, mainly through Nancy Z.’s recommendation. I was surprised to see that it was right in the Haymarket area – I’ve passed by it several times gawking at produce and being lost in the crazy crowd. After walking a couple of stairs downward into the shop, we found that we were the only customers inside. There, we saw a case of cheese, each labeled with the type and cost per pound, buckets of olives on a shelf, and a refrigerator full of soft cheeses and cold meats. Somewhat overwhelmed by it all, the girl working there was nice and allowed us to sample anything we wanted. She explained where each cheese was from, recommended different ways of using the cheese, and didn’t make us feel awkward or out of place at all. I was tempted to buy everything we tried but we left with a ton of goodies for only $16!!!! The stash included: half a pound of prosciutto ($5), a bottle of fig jam ($4), quarter of a pound of smoked gouda ($2.50), a ball of fresh mozzarella ($2), and a types of hard sheep’s milk cheese i forget the name of ($3.50) They are able to slice softer cheeses and cold cut meats to the way you like it. Harry’s even offers vehicles to eat your cheese and meats on, such as various crackers and freshly baked bread. Validated parking is available in the Parcel 7 garage for $1 an hour (for up to 3 hours), so therefore, there is no excuse not to come here and give it a shot. Winner winner cheese dinner!

1718 Steak House Stone Oak – Menu with Prices – 20626 Stone Oak Pkwy suite 103, San Antonio

Stopped in for happy hour for some bites and drinks. This is their new location and it was kinda difficult to find out much about happy hour as the number on this locations website goes to the downtown location. We were greeted at the door and were escorted to the bar where we requested to be seated. The bartender/manager (Roger) was very friendly. The place was very quiet as it was a weekday and had just opened for the day. We ordered a couple of drinks and browsed the happy hour menu. We ordered the tempura onion rings and the bacon smoked Gouda cheese fries. The drinks, Texas 75 and the Jameson blackberry were awesome! The amount of onion rings was amazing. They were hot and tasted excellent. The smoked Gouda cheese fries were amazing as well with the exception of too much green onion which I picked a lot off so the would not overpower the rest of the dish. It was rich and very filling. We also ordered the “snack tray”which is a smaller version of the charcuterie board. 3 cheeses,3 meats and three types of crackers. It all tasted very good (although my wife thought one of the types of crackers was stale,I thought it was the type of cracker). The prosciutto was the leanest I have ever had! The herbed goat cheese was amazing. We intend to try this place out for dinner in the near future. I think they need to work on their website to include their menus and explain happy hour etc. the staff we interacted with were all very friendly and helpful. There are only a few beer taps but there are other beer options. The wine list is building and they have some good wines reasonably priced. I look forward to reviewing the dinner options soon.

Tally Mac Shack – Menu with Prices – 1215 S Adams St Suite 2, Tallahassee

Holy macaroni this food truck is great! I have heard about this place many, many times, but had never had the opportunity to try it. My wife and I happened to stumble upon a food truck gathering on Thomasville Road and luckily Mac Shack was in attendance. The food here is so good. I tried two separate macaroni creations. Each dish is served with macoroni and cheese mixed with a different blend of cheeses and topped with various meats/veggies. The first dish I tried was the “Florida Boil”. It came with mac and cheese cooked with pepper jack and cajun-spiced cheddar cheeses. It was also topped with a decent portion of andouille sausage (so good). The unique mixture of cheese cooked into the macaroni perfectly complemented the andouille sausage. The second dish was the “Snorton Norton”. It was served with mac and cheese cooked with smoked gouda. The mac and cheese was covered in pulled pork covered in a delicious barbecue sauce. Once again, the meat offered with the unique blend of mac and cheese was great. Both of the aforementioned dishes were amazing. I couldn’t pick which one I enjoyed more, but I would suggest trying any of them. Overall, I would HIGHLY suggest giving this food truck a try. They consistently update their social media with their weekly locations/menus. I can’t wait to go back and try another mac and cheese creation!

Becher Meats & Provisions – Menu with Prices – 2415 N Monroe St #300, Tallahassee

Becher Marketplace Butchers takes you to the roots of all Italian cuisine. In its collection of meats and cheeses, you find the staples of Italian cooking and the dishes available throughout Urban Food Market. A charcuterie board from Becher can be a meal in and of itself, especially since the variety of items allows you to mix and match to suit your particular tastes. I personally love the mortadella and salami paired with a hard block of Pecorino Romano and a bit of soft Brie. Like Digia, Becher allows you to take the market experience home with you as you find a pound or two of meats and cheeses to spice up your own cooking.

Annata Wine Bar – Menu with Prices – 300 Beach Dr NE #128, St. Petersburg

We had a fabulous waitress named Kelly, I believe. She was upbeat, funny and personable! Great way to start! We started off with a bottle of rose and a cheese board (pick 7 combo of meat/cheese). Let me list you what the cheese board had in addition to our meat/cheese selection, and I STILL may accidentally leave something off. This board was legit! Fig preserves, dried apricots, truffled almonds, local honey, wafer crackers, cornichons, olives, cherry preserves, and stone ground mustard. Delish doesn’t even begin. We went with 4 meats, 3 cheeses: jalapeno cheddarwurst, truffle ham, prosciutto, soppressata, moltiterno al tartufo (sheep truffle cheese), manchego, and burrata. Price? $50 but so dang worth it! Our friend, D, ordered the fig and pig flat bread. I didn’t try it, but it looked divine! It has soppressata, speck, figs, caramelized onion, aged provolone, arugula, and prosciutto! Our group then tried two of their pastas: Short Rib Bolognese – colina tomato sauce, garganelli pasta, cream, basil and smoked ricotta. It was a perfectly executed bolognese! Oxtail Tortelloni – OMG my mouth is watering just typing this. I would fly to Tampa for this meal – resembles a pot roast in flavor but it way out of this world! It has Oxtail & ricotta stuffed pasta, guanciale, carrot, and bone marrow brodo. Hands down the winner at the table for our entree course. Why four stars? Unfortunately the one yelper at the table (me) ordered the black-fin snapper that was their daily special. It was inedible, bland, and just a crappy piece of fish. I am not one to send food back, but this had to go. It was so bad the manager, Rene (sorry if I misspelled), came by to let me know it was a horrible piece of fish and they would do practically anything to make up for it. So sad and it ruined my appetite. Glad I got a taste of everyone else’s meal before mine came out. Was it a deal breaker? Def for that night, but I would return hands down for that cheeseboard and oxtail. TIP: Sundays are 1/2 price bottles of wine!

Andy & Sons Importing Co Menu with Prices 256 Delaware Ave, Albany

Andy & Sons is one of the few places I get food from at least once a month. I require their Broadway sub for hikes, road trips, or just a really good lunch. Every ingredient they use is flavorful, fresh, and perfectly balanced within every sub. This place is worth it for the subs alone, there’s really no contest. But you can also get a lot of other dishes, included prepared pastas and antipasto, freshly sliced meats and cheeses (the asiago and fresh mozzarella balls are some of the best). If you’re looking for Italian meats and cheeses, this is the place to go (yes, they have a better Italian cheese selection than even the Cheese Traveler). You can also pick up some frozen pastas that they make in-house, a whole bunch of amazing quality Italian grocery items, from balsamic vinegars, to espresso, to biscotti and more. Staff is always nice and fast too. Just a note that they do have a card minimum of $10, but if you get a sub + one of the chocolate bars they sell there, you’ll be set and happy. Or grab some freshly made garlic bread toasts to share with friends.

Real BBQ and More – Menu with Prices – 5863 Fairfield Ave, Shreveport

A half pound of Brisket order was dry like it had been cut 3 hours earlier that day (at 1pm). It had some sort of seasoning salt sprinkled on it after being cut and plated. I’m not Aaron Franklin, but I’m pretty sure the rub goes on before you start smoking it, not after. The half pound of pork was cut into chunks and was rubbery. It wasn’t smoked long enough to be pulled apart (I tried because it had big veins of fat that weren’t rendered like it should’ve been). In all of my years of eating barbeque, this was visually the least appetizing plate I’ve ever been served and possibly the only plate I’ve ever stopped eating after one bite. I hate leaving negative reviews, but I’ve got to stick up for that poor pig. The Texan sandwiches the other guys ordered were good enough to eat, but I’m giving one star because that pork was inedible and didn’t taste like smoked bbq at all… It might have been cooked to the right internal temperature, but not long enough to break down the fat.

D’Aleo Italian Deli – Menu with Prices – US-1, St. Augustine

Lunchtime Joint that by taste can do more. Sandwiches are ok some nice fancy sounding combos but if size mattered they would be lost. Ordered one chicken parmesan and one eggplant parmesan Both where served with soggy bread from reheating in the microwave. Mind you both were promoted as fresh on thier window. The chicken was lacking flavor other than the bread crumbs coating it. The eggplant lacked any taste was mushy and cold in the middle. The Tomato Gravy was tasteless & lacked any home made definition which was then topped with a slice of cold deli cheese. Somethings in the cold case looked homemade as if they came from a real Italian deli in a big city i.e. dessert’s . The inside lacks room and was crowed but it was lunch. Two small bland hero’s with two bottled drinks ran $23.00. looking over the deli menu for meats found a pound of Mortadella at $10.00 a pound ; Procutto Deparma was over $26.00; Liverwurst was 9.00 a pound. Which is odd as this was the very first time I have been to an ‘Italian’ Deli that carried Liverwurst. The staff was frendly and the owner and his Mom too. But just because you speak Italian and can hand a piece of cheese or two from the ceiling and then advertise it as an ‘Italian’ Deli is just wrong.

Neopol Savory Smokery Menu with Prices 529 E Belvedere Ave, Baltimore

I’d always been intrigued by Neopol when I drop into Belvedere Square and I finally tried them out and I will definitely be back! As the name suggests, pretty much everything is smoked – many varieties of salmon, pastrami, mackerel, cheese; they even smoke tofu, garlic, and hummus! Point is, if you like smoked food, you’ll like this place. I tried one of the cheese pies, all of which are around $10. They look smaller in the case than they do on the plate; even splitting one with a companion I was very satisfied. I thoroughly enjoyed my roasted red peppers and artichoke filling and am eager to sample the other flavors. The folks behind the counter were fast and friendly. They even offered a few samples of their cardamom lemonade and their rice salad. Prices vary; you can get a sandwich, pie, or salad for anywhere from $10-$15, but once you start ordering smoked salmon by the pound, it can get pricey (as of this writing, most of the smoked salmon was $26/lb.). Overall solid and worth a try.

Columbo’s Pizza – Menu with Prices – 1226 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster

Once upon a time, there was a local chain of sit-down pizza restaurants called Your Place Restaurant. I was introduced by Y.P. to this new food called stromboli years ago. The stromboli was uniquely different and so good. It had meats and cheeses in it that I really didn’t get on subs, sandwiches or pizza. Your Place is still around with 1 or 2 restaurants. Sadly, the size and quality of the Y.P. stromboli has shrunk while the price has risen. Fast foward a couple years later: A co-worker of mine reminded me of the Y.P. stromboli and he then recommended a local place called Columbo’s Pizza. He said to get their special Stromboli called the Columboli. I will not regret it. I tried it and it was even better than my past memories! The Columboli contains meats of ham, salami and Italian sausage. The cheeses consist of American and mozzarella. The stromboli also contains mustard and oregano/pepper. I know these meats, cheeses and condiments sound odd for stromboli, but it works so good! This is the only way I will ever eat stromboli ! Which is strange since beef, bacon or chicken is my preferred meat included in my meals. Just don’t put it in my Columboli !!! The downside is the size of the Columboli is starting to get smaller. I hope they don’t start shrinking them like Your Place. I know, the economy is bad but…come on! Be good to your loyal Columboli customer. He/she will buy it until they say…”I guess I’m not important” P.S. The only place that I know that carries this same kind of awesome stromboli is called Tony Di Maggio’s Pizza located in San Jose,Ca. No pepperoni or vegetables like onion or green pepper.

Screwtop Wine Bar Menu with Prices 1025 N Fillmore St, Arlington

This place is absolutely adorable. As a Wisconsin native, I die for anywhere that has amazing cheese and this place has an incredible cheese selection. We went on a Monday night around 6:30 and there was a wait, which was okay but surprising. The staff at Screwtop is really knowledgeable and super friendly, we had some wine while we waited and looked at the wine selection available. I’d say in total we probably waited about 15 minutes before we were seated. Once seated we ordered a selection of three cheeses & added cornichons (little pickles). The prices may look a little crazy but let me tell you, they give you a TON. I think for $2 they gave us an entire jar of cornichon lol. We went with a pumpkin goat cheese, a seasonal garlic-y gouda (the green one in my picture) and a guinness cheddar. The cheese was all awesome, they also let us sample a pumpkin gouda that was AMAZING. The portions are huge and they give you a gigantic basket of bread & crackers, we couldn’t finish anything, I was not at all disappointed. We also ordered the truffle mac & cheese and its wine pairing. OMG, sooo good. In my opinion, it could have been a bit more creamy but the truffle flavor was on point. We also had a cup of the pumpkin soup which was to die for. Creamy, thick and perfectly seasoned. It was exactly what you want from a pumpkin soup. I ordered the Thanksgiving Wine Flight which was $35 but the pours were pretty generous. This was the only thing I thought was a tad over priced. I really enjoyed the wines though. Over all, I would DEFINITELY come back and would also consider hosting a group event here.

Greggs Substation and Casino – Menu with Prices – 1000 W 41st St, Sioux Falls

Greggs is a very homey little shop that feels more like visiting a relative at home, like an aunt, who makes one hell of a sandwich than a place of business. This particular “aunt” leaves you feeling nostalgic not only for the food, but the general feel and appearance of her place that has gone unchanged since you were a child in the 80s. My first trip to Greggs was a bit of a disappointment, but I’ll take most of the blame. First off, any of the warm subs you order, like steak, are heated in a microwave. You should never order microwaved steak. Secondly, I was overwhelmed by the menu which consists of about 40 options written on a white board that covers the entire wall behind the counter. For my most recent trip I decided to stick to the cold cuts, and ordered a royal combo which consisted of 4 meats and cheese. You have a choice of white or wheat and a nice long list of additional toppings you can add to your sub at no additional cost. My sammie today included lettuce, tomato, onion, bean sprouts, S&P, oil, vinegar, oregano, mayo, and spicy mustard. This combination was delightfully flavorful and fresh. As mentioned in previous reviews the meats and cheeses are cut to order. I also had a chicken enchilada soup that included frito chips on top and had just the right amount of kick. The soups have yet to disappoint. With prices ranging from $4.50 – $6 for the regular size you can enjoy one of Greggs subs and leave with a full belly and wallet. Just be mindful of what you’re ordering to ensure your best possible experience.
