So I’m going to be honest here: I am a wussy IPA drinker. I don’t like bitter beers that taste like you’re chewing the hops flower, and I definitely don’t like ones that have the faint taste of cannabis. Unfortunately for me, that 3/5 of the beers on tap, but if you love really strong and bitter IPAs, this place is for you. It’s not my thing, but people love them, and they apparently do them well. That being said, the amber is deeeeelish and I really enjoyed the nitro milk stout. And when the two of them got knocked over and too hot to drink, they generously refilled the soiled beer. The space is big and open, and there are a few tables to sit outside in the parking lot. There is a bit of parking, but I could guess that it’s going to be crowded, because it’s a really nice place to just hang out. Service was friendly, and while it was a fairly older crowd on day 3, I’m sure it will be a hopping place sooner or later. Get in to try the beer as soon as you can!

The Sleepy Whale – Menu with Prices – 290 S Arizona Ave, Chandler

This is a fun/different little place in downtown Chandler. If you didn’t already know, this is a beer lovers paradise. It’s a pub! If you are a liquor drinker like me….. be ready to settle for some beers or a few different wines. I am allergic to beer, but luckily they had a cider on tap that I could try. I wish I could remember the name of it because it was terrific! I think one of the top 5 ciders I have had. Their menus are on pallets that are on the wall, they don’t pass out menus, or come to your table, so I couldn’t even begin to figure out what I had. The bartenders were great, we asked them for a cider, they gave me the cider. My husband and our friends mentioned what beer they like and the bartenders found them each something they would like that they have on tap. They did a great job. Everyone loved the choices they were given, and we had a great night! You can also buy beer and wine and take (unopened of course) to go! The atmosphere is very open and industrial. They have shareable space, so you don’t have your own tables. The tables are big farm tables and bar high tops, and you sit with everyone. They have different games you can play too. They are either already sitting out on tables or up at the bar for you to choose from. That’s a fun idea to have in a pub! It is also a pretty cool concept to sit down next to strangers and say hi or enjoy other peoples company. It’s very open, lots of light, with roll-up doors to take advantage of the weather. They do not serve food but have different food trucks that come by. I am not sure if it is every night, or how their food trucks work, but if you get hungry, you can walk out to the parking lot and check out what food truck they have there for the day. Limited parking in their actual lot, so if you are coming during “busy” hours, I recommend parking in the parking garage right across the street. I have a few friends who LOVE craft beers, so I can’t wait to take them here!

Hops and Bottles Menu with Prices 1420 W Grove St, Boise

This place is a pretty chill place to hang. Choose indoor or outdoor seating. Inside is a bit loud but isn’t that why you are out on the town?! To see, hear, and be with people?! No pun intended but this place is “hopping”! (Get it Hops & Bottles… hopping? No?) My jaw dropped when I saw the prices on the library collection of beer to choose from and for only a few dollars!?? Hold it right there…. there is a corking fee but don’t worry, your beer will still be WAY more affordable than a beer down the street or in the heart of town. (Beers on tap as well!) The only challenge with this place, choosing which delicious beer/cider you want. You will want them all! Great place to try something new!

Hop Valley Brewing Co – Menu with Prices – 990 W 1st Ave, Eugene

My dad wanted to visit a brewery and try some beer samples while in Portland. Unfortunately we didn’t have the time, so we figured we’d find one that offers beer flights at a reasonable price. I browsed through the many breweries in Eugene, Oregon and came across Hop Valley. They seemed pretty legitimate (from the little I know about beer), and seeing how they make their own beers (in those giant machines?) this place was worth a shot. The brewery is actually relatively large with a ton of parking. We came during off hours on a weekday afternoon and there was a good amount of people. I like how they have an open window that allows you to see all the machinery. The workers were friendly and super helpful as they helped us get started and answered our absurd questions that my sister and I had. You can order flights in 6, 9, or 12 selections. They have a selection of beers on tap that they rotate out every so often. Since I am not a beer connoisseur by any means, their menu with a short blurb describing the beer really helped us out a lot. So we went with 9 beers to try. I believe the price was a dollar something for each one, making it a very affordable flight. Tried the vanilla infused porter, purple cole, bubble stash, mango stash, citrus mistress, hefe, hop valley blonde, reveal, and charmin’ swine. I have to admit that after trying every single sampler, I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t like beer. And if I ever feel inclined to drink it, I’d prefer something that was sweeter and not so bitter. I think I enjoyed the lighter and fruitier beers. They all began to blend together and taste the same, but I think I really liked reveal and hefe. The beers were served in a cute leaf tray where there were numbers that corresponded to the numbers of the list that you wrote down for the beer. That way you can keep track of what you’ve tried. tl;dr – A good selection of beer and the flight is a great deal. Even though I don’t personally enjoy beer, I thought it was a nice way to end our Oregon trip.

Saint Arnold Brewing Company – Menu with Prices – 2000 Lyons Ave, Houston

Outdoor patio space – absolutely love it! Super chill. Clean, open, lively. Servers come to hour table. There is a roof over the majority of it. Some seating in the main outdoor area and to the side is uncovered. Bocci ball courts on the side. Don’t be in a rush – just come here and relax for several hours! Indoor space (that is connected to the patio) – feels like a German beer hall / cathedral inside! Cozy. Unique alcoves along both sides that are decorated with art work – each one different to the next Drinks – wide selection of craft brews to suit any taste palate! My personal fav: Raspberry AF ($6/pint). You can get a flight of 5 beers for $9. There are also Saint Arnold’s pint glasses for purchase: glass+beer for $10. If you don’t drink beer, there are a few Saintsbury vineyard wine options ($12-15/glass, a wee bit pricey, but you’re really here for the beer, right?!) Food – I always get the chicken salad sandwich – huge yummy portion size for only $12 and comes with a side of fries! Other food items that we had at our table: crawfish roll with a side of the elote en vaso (omg get this Mexican corn as a side, or it even comes as an entree!), bishop burger (heard was just “ok”) with a side of mac-n-cheese (creamy yum), wings (two kinds: jerk and fire emoji), baby back ribs. Occasionally there are some changes / additions to the menu! Service – never had an issue! Friendly down to earth staff. Parking: plenty between the multiple lots and street parking. Other: fun art cars are always on display outside. Inside there is Saint Arnold’s merch for sale (including gift cards)! Ask your server about hopping on one of the *free* brewery tours (1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm)!

Burning Brothers Brewing – Menu with Prices – 1750 Thomas Ave W, St Paul

We did a very small book club meeting here so I could try out some beer that didn’t have barley malt in it. I wanted to be certain, so I was shown the list of ingredients for every single beer that they offer. That’s awesome! I did like the service here. They really know their product, which is really important for anyone with an allergy. I got a flight of the beers and liked…mmm, two or three in total. I don’t know much about beer, and I’ve gone a lot of my life without beer, so I don’t know if it was the beer that was meh or just me. However, I was with two beer-drinkin’ friends and they did not particularly like anything they had here either. But, YMMV and it may totally be to your taste! Why I give it three stars is the space itself. It is SMALL, yo. Surprisingly small, and there’d be space for a patio but they have cars park there instead…. There’s plenty of parking on the streets in the ‘hood, so why not have a patio? It was a beautiful summer night and I was very sad we couldn’t sit outside. The gluten-free food truck that was there that night had the most limited menu ever: corn dogs, cheese curds, and donuts. What. At least they had bland popcorn inside available for free. Anyway, what I ultimately took away from the experience is I don’t care about beer, regardless of my ability to drink it or not. An important lesson!

Populuxe Brewing – Menu with Prices – 826 NW 49th St, Seattle

This was probably my least favorite brewery that I went to in Seattle – which is clearly not to say that it was bad, mostly just it was the one with the least interesting range of beers (mostly pretty traditional, and I prefer the wackier stuff.) I had this one on my list mainly because there were a couple others nearby, and because I saw they had an arcade, which I figured would be fun during a day of brewery-hopping. It’s a pretty small arcade, just a few machines, and they’re regular price, but they are there, and are in good condition, so that is pretty neat. When I was there a couple months ago (though I’m sure it’s 100% different by now), they had about 10 beers available, of which only one sounded like my kind of beer, so I got a taster of that – a raspberry wheat ale. Funny enough, I ended up trying a second one, because they gave me the wrong taster the first time. I hate IPAs, and the IPA they gave me, “Fresh Hop: Citra”, was actually surprisingly enjoyable, as far as IPAs go (more fruity than bitter). It was clearly not a raspberry wheat ale, though, so I went back and told them, they fixed their mistake without complaint, gave me the correct taster, which was also pretty enjoyable. A little lighter than I prefer, but definitely full of raspberries (and tasted like actual raspberry, not “raspberry flavoring” like a lot of raspberry beers). If you like more traditional, less experimental beers, you will probably quite like it here. (Or if you’ve been out drinking beer all day, and want to stop for a bit and play a couple games of pinball.)

Wynwood Brewing Company – Menu with Prices – 565 NW 24th St, Miami

New favorite spot! Beer here is SO good OMG, where has this place been all my life?! And what’s crazy is I’ve passed bY it before but it wasn’t until a friend invited me to hear him DJ that I actually went in and stayed for a minute playing their games, listening to the music, enjoying their amazing beer and just catching a vibe. People def should come here, it’s in wynwood close to everything, it’s a clean spacious place with their brewery behind their bar, lots of seating available and an outside area with food trucks. I love how they have live music and provide a bunch of board games. It was so much fun to just hang out with friends, catch up over an incredibly delicious beer and get a bit competitive over a good game of “sorry” or Uno. So, other than the great location and space, other than the music and games that help create such a fun & chill environment, the beer is número uno in Miami. They have your typical beers, your local miami beers (la rubia etc), and THEIR amazing beers! My fav was father Francisco, Love their menu how they give you a description of the beer & alcohol content, and appreciated the employees talking to us about their menu and even letting us taste the beer before ordering it- that was super nice! Love love love this place, can’t wait to go back!

The Ale Apothecary Menu with Prices 30 SW Century Dr #140, Bend

You’re coming here for the beer and the beer only. No food, no shuffleboard, none of that. They’re open only three days a week, just for a few hours. It’s a small operation, very simple as taprooms go. The beer, on the other hand, is some of the most complex and beautiful you’ll ever get to try. You can range the wide world over and might only try a few things anything like what TAA offers. This was easily one of the best beer-drinking days of my entire life, and these five stars go for the beer (which you could drink elsewhere), as well as what happens here. Like I said, it’s small. Seating for about 20. Couple barstools, few tables. One nice clean bathroom. They work here–they’re aging beer in barrels, they’re conditioning finished beer in bottles. They fill bottles and pack beer for shipment. The brewing happens up in the hills, where the beer almost never touches metal; they transfer, condition, store, and ferment beers in wooden containers of various kinds. They have to boil in metal, but otherwise it’s all wood all the time until it lands in glass. That stuff is offsite from the taproom, but you can see the barrels around the corner from the bar. These beers are so complex and interesting and so far beyond 99% of the stuff you see anywhere. Deep sour and funk, deep fruit, deep barrel character. Crazy ingredients (pine needles!) in some stuff. The flavors all work together to make something big and engaging, it’s never just a who-knows experiment with these guys, ever. The beers cost more, and even a couple of fairly experienced-looking beer fans in the room didn’t seem to click with what they tried. But they were heavily outnumbered by geeks who drove hundreds of miles to get here and fall even more deeply in love with these beers. Can’t wait to crack my take-home bottles and go get more.

Flying Machine Brewing Company – Menu with Prices – 3130 Randall Pkwy, Wilmington

Love, love, love this place! Officially my second favorite brewery now in Wilmington! When this place was set up and built, they did it right. No corners cut on equipment or facilities and an excellent team of brewers! The space is cavernous and has an amazing second floor deck with great views plus a nice outdoor space on the first floor. I love that they have the beer menu projected movie screen size on the wall – makes it so easy to plan what’s next. The bartenders here are so chill that it’s frozen. All three made their friendly presences know and chatted a bit – just on their A game all around. Really enjoyed Dan-O (spelling??) – totally rad dude who knows his beer. Now the beer – My flight: Obedience to Ritual ( NE DIPA), Electra (MA IPA), Governable Parachutes (IPL) and my absolute favorite Mozi’s Kite (NE IPA). All of them were just really clean, delicious, skillfully made beers but that Mozi’s – holy crap it’s good! I had more of that and a taste some of their Rasberry LZ1 Berliner Weisse and Cask Landsbier with Blood Orange and Citra – two more crazy good beers. Just an impressive place all around – you could sit around all day long drinking their beer and never tire of it! Awesome job guys and gals! Can’t wait for a return visit!

Alma Mader Brewing – Menu with Prices – 2635 Southwest Blvd, Kansas City

Alma Mader has quickly rose to being one of my top 3 favorite breweries in the city. They have consistently been putting out some of the best quality beers, especially their Pilsners and their IPA’s. Space: I’m not a fan of the taproom, it just feels bland and sterile to me with the white walls and decor. The parking situation can be lacking as well. Although they have off-street parking, it is set up in such a way that can be cumbersome for larger vehicles to navigate. Finally, the smell…. I’m sure the issue is they were storing their spent grain in the building so a few times I have been at the brewery there has been a distinct rotting grain aroma, which can be extremely pungent and disgusting. The last time I was at the taproom I didn’t smell the odor so I’m hoping that means they figured out a better way to deal with the spent grain. Beer: The beer here is hands down a cut above anything else being put out in the city. I would say they are more focused on the hoppier sides of things with a majority of their beers on tap being variations of pale ales, IPA’s and Double IPA’s, but they have some other options on the lighter side like Pilsners and Kolschs as well as some darker porters. They have done lots of collaboration beers with other breweries throughout the midwest so you get to try some beers brewed with breweries that may not distribute to this area. Food: I don’t think I’ve seen food or snacks for sale at the brewery, but you are able to bring in outside food which is always a good option. Overall: I know I was very critical on the actual space, but the beer is SOOOOOO good that I’m able to look past those issues and still give this brewery 5 stars. If you love good beer, DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS PLACE!

Prairie Artisan Ales – Menu with Prices – 3 NE 8th St, Oklahoma City

I absolutely love this place. Prairie changed my mind on beer and now I appreciate craft beers. Well most of them. Still learning to drink the heavier stouts etc. but don’t get me wrong. The stouts are bursting with flavor and some of the yummiest. But I can’t seem to drink a lot of it in one sitting (yet). My favorite thing here is the changing menu. I love to pop in to see what else the decided to throw in a barrel. My favorite as far as beers have been some of the sours. I’ve had sours in the past where it was just well. Sour. And you don’t really get to taste the hints of whatever was in the description. But at Prairie you definitely can call out what they included. They one had a vanilla orange dreamsicle ish sour. So good! The cherry ones are literally outstanding. Such a craft and skill and so excited for this Oklahoma company. Thank you prairie for introducing me, well mostly making me fall in love with good craft beers! Love the atmosphere too. Sometimes we’ll walk around the area and end here for a treat. The byo food is so fun. They have board games that my family and friends and I have had tons of Sunday fundays here. Also there is trivia on Sunday. The only thing I dislike are the hours! We like beer on weekdays too! ? they close relatively early at 9. Which sure a lot of places do in OK so they are not the only ones. But this is one place I always think of going to. Then realize it’s already 8 and decide to go somewhere else that stays open until at least 11 so you don’t feel like you’re keeping the staff etc and can still be comfortable and take your time.
