In search of diners old, in neighborhoods gentrified, avoiding avocados, of kale and smoothies petrified, he sought hearty sustenance at prices gone by, he stumbled into Billy’s to give it a try. [BREAKFAST ONLY REVIEW: No subs were tried before the writing of this review] Wandering along South End, looking for breakfast I ended up at Billy’s to find myself staring at a white and black plastic menu board from times certainly not recent. Subs, cause this a sub shop,eggs most non-fancy style, pancakes, waffles and more to choose from. Coffee and tea and things bottled to drink. A literal mom and a pop behind the counter and their sons buzzing between the kitchen and the sandwich bar. Patrons comprising of uniformed fire-fighters of varying shapes, police officers, people in pajamas, construction workers, curious tourists and the to-go clientele of trendily dressed office goers. Emulating any avid film watcher’s vision of the typical Bostonian breakfast place from times old, Billy’s with the smell of cheap fat in the air has atmosphere which cannot be reproduced by any of your fancy brunch places. I would have the western omelette with cheese and home fries and come back the next day for some blueberry pancakes. The omelette was filled with american cheese and bell peppers with ham and onion, served with heavily buttered toast. Crying out for heat and crunch, these eggs came with lukewarm, some soft some too dry potatoes. The pancakes were thick, fluffy and came not with the best of syrups. But then one looks at the prices and there isn’t much room to complain for a hearty meal under 10 bucks in what is one of the most expensive cities of the nation. For the food at the price I would give Billy’s 3.5/5, but for the people watching opportunities and generally retaining a vibe which seems to offer the authenticity which a lot of out-of-towners are looking for, I’d give it a 4/5. Maybe the sandwiches are much better, they certainly looked much better. “Then why’d you not have one?”.”Cause there was pancakes there!”

Cook’s Cafe – Menu with Prices – 1300 N 66th St, Lincoln

Good breakfast at a good price with exceptional service. It’s simple, clean, and no frills. As I normally do when I’m visiting another city, I went all out. My order consisted of a half order of biscuits & gravy, sausage links, hash browns, bacon/egg/cheese omelette, and 2x blueberry pancakes. The biscuits and gravy were good (and oddly enough had enough pepper…most places never use enough pepper). The sausage links worked well with syrup. The hash browns reminded me very much of waffle house hash browns, which are also good. The omelette was fine, but didn’t really stand out. The best part of the mean was definitely the blueberry pancakes. Those monsters were terrific. Even though I gorged, my bill was still under $25. And my coffee cup never got below half full despite my beat efforts and probably drinking a pot and a half’s worth. Not sure if this joint is worth going way out of the way for, but if it’s close by and you’re wanting a nice down home breakfast; this is a great option.

Sammy’s Stackhouse – Menu with Prices – 707 N Tustin St, Orange

I came here in search of a hearty American breakfast. They definitely have an extensive menu with plenty of options, but their main focus is on pancakes, waffles, french toast, and crepes…so basically this is a carb lover’s dream come true! We ordered the chicken and waffles. The chicken was a little on the dry side, but paired really nicely with their waffles, especially topped with a little whipped butter and house maple syrup! We also tried the build-your-own-pancake combination, which is an amazing value. For just $10, you can choose any two types of pancakes, sausage or bacon, potatoes or hash browns, and two eggs. I originally opted for the strawberry/banana pancakes, but they came literally drenched in syrup. Besides being way too sweet, the pancakes themselves were soggy and somewhat doughy from being undercooked. Fortunately, the staff was nice enough to swap out these pancakes for some blueberry pancakes, which were much more palatable, although still kind of flat for a place that specializes in “stacks.” Overall, the food isn’t bad, but it’s a bit reminiscent of middle-of-the-road diner chains. The service also leaves much to be desired. Our waitress was pretty good at the beginning of our meal and took our order right away, but kept forgetting to bring us simple things like a set of utensils, napkins, etc., which made us feel rather neglected. I do like how they give you carafes of coffee for your table so you can refill it yourself throughout the meal, which is a nice touch…but not sure it’s enough to bring me back! Even with the current 20% off discount for checking in on Yelp, it’s still a little pricey, plus the food just seems too rich and greasy to start your day off with.

Don’s Country Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 1938 S Coast Hwy #6433, Oceanside

On our way to Seaworld we wanted to have a hearty breakfast to keep us full for some time. Found this place on Yelp and got there around 8:30am on a Sunday. We were two families including 4 children and they sat us immediately by offering us two separate tables next to each other which we did not mind. The breakfast menu is extensive from omelettes to pancakes, Benedicts to scrambles, B. Sandwiches to “light items” and their famous stuffed hash browns so there is something for everyone. My son wanted to have “chocolate waffle” but they did not have such a thing on their menu but our waitress offered him nicely to bring pancakes with chocolate chips which was accepted by my son without doubt, lol My husband and I decided to get a stuffed hash-brown and a Fresh Spinach Omelet and split. The kids pancakes arrived shortly as we requested because our children were very hungry and impatient.They loved their Mickey shaped pancake, that was a win! And there it came our each split in two separate plates already which was a great proactivity. The food was so tasty, we tried to eat as much as we could despite being full already. The stuffed hash-brown was something I never had before and it was fantastic! Perfect crispy hash-browns folded and filled with bacon, cheese, avocado, topped with runny sunny side up eggs and Hollandaise sauce. How great combo is that?! Anyhow it tasted as good as it sounds ? The Omelette was flavorful too. It had so much spinach and Jack cheese which we liked a lot. The portions are huge and we could totally be full by sharing just one dish. The prices are fair varying between $10-12. The service was friendly and quick. The waitress got our orders right and went above and beyond to deliver them. We were full up until 6pm that we had dinner on our way back to LA so that was another plus that we did not have to have the overpriced and mediocre food at Seaworld!

Lawrence Park Dinor – Menu with Prices – 4019 Main St, Erie

We went a bit out of our way to try this place for the first time. Curious to see if it lived up to the hype. Well, it did not disappoint in the least. It is a small Dinor, so there will likely be a wait if you go on the weekend or peak times, but they do get people in fast enough. We chatted with a few folks as we waited and glad we did, as they gave us some tips on what to order. They raved about the Greek Sauce and told us if we really liked it that they sold the seasoning to make it. So we were willing to give it a try. Once we were seated, we were quickly approached for our order. We went with the big breakfast of eggs, sausage, potatoes and pancakes. Didn’t want to commit to the Omelette with Greek sauce so I got it on the side to try. It also lived up to the hype! Absolutely delicious and it was incredible on the breakfast potatoes as well as the cheese omelette also ordered. Coffee was great and service was super friendly and fast. It really was like going back in time. So next time I want to travel back, I will commit to the Greek sauce! We enjoyed everything we ordered. We did appreciate the earlier tip and brought back some Greek Sauce Seasoning and made it with ground Turkey instead and it was amazing. Perfection on the spice, it was fabulous.

Herb’s Social – Menu with Prices – 6305 N President George Bush Hwy #8101, Garland

We ate Sunday Bruch here today. We were seated by a friendly hostess who sat us on the patio, at our request. At 11:00 AM their were no other diners inside or outside. Our server was pleasant and knowledgeable about the very limited brunch menu. My husband and I ordered the American Breakfast; two pancakes, two eggs over medium, and two strips of bacon. Our friends ordered pancakes only. Here is why I gave this restaurant a one star rating. The eggs were cooked well , well done. But the pancakes were much worse. I’ve never had any that were so dense, dry, and heavy. In fact, when I first saw them on our plates, I thought they were made with cornmeal and flour. Needless to say, not one of us had more than two bites of the pancakes. We did have much discussion among our foursome as to how any cook could so screw up pancakes. As we were leaving an hour later, I noticed there was only one inside booth occupied for dining. However, there was three people drinking at the bar. The lack of diners at noon on a Sunday speaks volumes. Herb needs to monitor the fare his cook is sending out, or there won’t be a Herb’s Social much longer I’m afraid.

J. Christopher’s Menu with Prices 1650 S Lumpkin St, Athens

I came into town and tired to find a place that specializes in breakfast and brunch and cake across this place. It’s set up very homey and I really enjoyed the setting. Their menu is easily to understand and set out very well. I ordered the eggs Christopher and the blueberry pancakes. It was absolutely delicious. But I would definitely substitute the tomatoes for avocado. The eggs Benny were cooked perfectly!! The pancakes were also delicious! I highly reccomend this order. Coffee was good as well. Service was excellent and extremely quick. The only reason I reduced the review by one star was because the food was slightly cold when it got to us. Mind you, the service was so fast, but the food was slightly less than warm which was a surprise. Especially the potatoes that came with the meal, they were colder. I would come here again though, because it was that tasty.

Butch’s Place Family Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 3330 W 26th St, Erie

Cute little diner, very busy and now I know why! We stopped in after finding this place on Yelp. What a treat. We all wanted a hearty breakfast after a rough night out. It took a few minutes to get a table and quite a while to get our food, but the coffee kept coming and the ladies working were friendly. The omelets were cooked perfectly, not over done. I’d definitely recommend Butch’s breakfast potatoes over the hash browns. The hash browns were under cooked. The breakfast potatoes were fresh cut and cooked on the grill…perfection. The pancakes were the BEST I’ve had in a long time. The batter had a nice flavor and the texture was heaven. They had a hot griddle crispness to them and were soft and fluffy in the middle. We ordered the vege omelet which came with potatoes and toast, an order of 2 chocolate chip pancakes and a breakfast combo that came with two eggs, two plain pancakes, meat and potatoes, and a coffee and the bill came to $26 before tip. Not bad pricing, but those pancakes are worth every penny. It was a good amount of food. Just what we were looking for!

Shorty’s Cookin Country – Menu with Prices – 603 S Belt Line Rd, Irving

There were some good and then some just average things about this spot. The location is not great and the sign on the front is not appealing. However when you get inside it is just a nice little restaurant. For the food, it was good and it is worth a stop. The best thing by far is the cinnamon pecan pancakes. Absolutely excellent. I had an omelette. The biscuits and gravy that came with them were bad. The biscuits were hard and not good. The gravy was weak and had no sausage in it. However overall everybody enjoyed their breakfast. The pancakes and eggs were all cooked good. Worth the stop if a decent breakfast is wanted

Sakura Cafe – Menu with Prices – 2389 Burrard St, Vancouver

This is a small Japanese/Asian-style cafe located on Burrard, just a short distance from Broadway. They have a menu of various breakfast and lunch items, as well as a large variety of drinks. I had a Matcha Latte and Breakfast B, which consists of pancakes, eggs, and sausage. The food was solid; the prices were also very reasonable. The service was minimal, but the staff was very friendly. All in all, this is a joint that I’d definitely recommend checking out. They do have quite a limited number of seats however, so catch them at a less busy time or have your food to go. Matcha Latte ($4.35): 4/5 The latte had a great fragrance from the matcha. It was smooth and creamy, and had a wonderful, slightly bitter flavour. Breakfast B ($7.99): 3.5/5 This consisted of two pancakes, two scrambled eggs, and turkey sausage. The pancakes were relatively light and fluffy. The eggs were quite fluffy and creamy. The sausage was flavourful, and had a nice spice to it. Summary: Food: 4/5 Price: 4/5 Service: N/A Overall: 4/5 Recommendations: Matcha Latte, Breakfast B

Heat Da Spot Café – Menu with Prices – 3213 Georgia Ave NW, Washington

I give this place five stars for excellent customer service. This spot is definitely your typical hole in the wall, mom and pop restaurant. My boyfriend and I arrives here on one Saturday morning. We walked in with an appetite, and boy am I glad that we did! Where is Saturday morning, the restaurant was actually pretty busy. There were patrons sitting both inside and outside. There was one woman at the cash register and a man who was bringing food to the tables. The restaurant isn’t very big, but what it lacks in square feet it gains and delicious cuisine. The owners of this restaurant are Ethiopian, which is evident in the authentic homestyle dishes such as Ethiopian breakfast which includes an “African style” omelette with a complimentary side of Injera and their “secret” sauce, which isn’t for the faint of heart! The secret sauce IS spicy and has a little kick, so if you can’t handle raw jalapeños, you may want to skip. The menu also includes pancakes, waffle, egg, and cheese “sandwich”, clam chowder, vegan subs, and so much more! I think my favorite feature of Heat Da Spot is the all day breakfast. You can’t go wrong with that! Personally I think a lot of the items on the menu are shareable as most of the portions are easily more than 1 serving. Just a tip* The customer service here is amazing and the owner really wants you to feel at home. You’re really catered to here, something I find is almost becoming a lost art for the sake of getting people “in and out.” I definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a hearty and delicious meal!

Karla’s Beach House – Menu with Prices – 3248 E Ocean View Ave, Norfolk

I loved but my friend had what she considered serious problems with her food. We both agreed the house coffee was great! We had different breakfast meals. She had an omelette with cheddar cheese ( I think) and other meat a vegetables. Her issue was the omelette was over cooked. She described it to the owner as being burnt. I would have described it as well done. She noted that she wanted no under done whites but as is it was unacceptable. The owner sent it back. A few minutes later an omelette returned. My friend checked the omelette carefully. Finally, she opened it and it appeared that they took they turned the omelette inside out. Put the original contents in the new inside and cheese on the outside. Then brought it back. The owner took it off the bill. I agree with my friend that the returned final omelette was the same omelette and the was sneaky. I’m not so certain the first omelette wasn’t done properly.

Hometown Country Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 894 S Boulder Hwy, Henderson

Really quick, my roommate and I have eaten there twice for breakfast. Both times both meals were great and the prices are right. I ordered a big breakfast meal. The one I ordered was 3 eggs over medium, bacon, hash browns, and pancakes. Everything was perfect, eggs cooked the way I requested, that’s hard to find sometimes, potatoes and bacon were great, and the pancakes hung off the plater, I wasn’t able to finish them . The 2nd time, I ordered the same meal, but with a few changes. Eggs, potatoes, toast the same and perfect. Then I ordered ham, instead of bacon, and French toast instead of pancakes. Nothing was wrong the first time, I just wanted to try the other items. I’m glad I did because the French toast was one of the better I’ve had, and the ham was out of this world. Great tasting and a large piece. I don’t think I mentioned prior, but this dish is $10. Not bad at all for all that food. I’ve lived in this area for a year now, this place just reopened about 2 months ago. Every time we’ve driven by the place it’s always busy, plus, it’s not fast food, it’s real food, so we had to try it. Apparently it was open prior to this, I believe the same restaurant, just an upgrade. I have no idea how it was prior, but it’s not huge inside, and both times we were able to get a table, but within 10 minutes of being sat, there was a waiting list. They have a nice little waiting area as you walk in, but that might fill up quickly on the weekends, just keep that in mind, that’s why we eat early most of the time.
