Had to get my A1 maintenance on my car done across the street at Honda. And I was feeling a little nostalgic, I’ve passed by here a few times visiting HMart, and I really missed the fan hups we could get for under a buck (American) in Hong Kong/Macau so I went in to order a BBQ pork with rice. The employees were sitting at the back table(there’s only 3 tables) eating lunch, as a family I guess, conversing in Cantonese. I ordered in English, and she asked if I wanted steamed rice or the fried rice. I guess I should’ve ordered in Cantonese to be clearer. My Chinese isn’t great but I do know my food. Service was quick and she chopped up the meat right away. I know this is primarily a take out restaurant, but there was no offer of water or hot tea. There’s a refrigerator of purchasable cold drinks in the back, but I just had to do with no beverages. I didn’t see them drinking out of any cups either. My meal came out all on a single plate with a fork and spoon, I had to ask for chopsticks. It looks nice I suppose but I expected my rice to come in its own separate bowl to make it easier to eat with chopsticks. Bowl of rice in my left hand, chopsticks in my right grabbing stuff from the meat plate. I was all “Challenge Accepted” to the idea of eating rice off a plate with chopsticks anyway. The rice had a scoop of meat drippings sauce ladled onto it, which was authentic, and there were a couple pieces of cabbage and broccoli. Now onto the main part of the dish the BBQ pork/char siu. If it wasn’t red I wouldn’t have been able to tell it was char siu. I would’ve thought I was eating thinly sliced pieces of pork chop. It was salty and lean. I was expecting a bit more sweetness and more fat. There was 0 fat on my meat. The portions and price were alright and I left full for $11, but I ended get more satisfaction eating a $1.75 sandwich from the bakery inside HMart. Language wise they have decent English, and I’ve overheard them speaking both Cantonese and Mandarin to their other customers

Yummy Express – Menu with Prices – 6441 Yadkin Rd #2166, Fayetteville

I’ll start off with saying I spent a year and a half in Korea eating out almost every day and always trying somewhere new.. so with that said my expectation might be higher because I’ve been searching for that same taste I enjoyed while in Korea. I think I’ve been here twice but I can’t remember the first time and it felt like I had been there before which automatically made me want to leave.. the staff was nice I can say that but my issue comes from the disconnect between food and cost… I spent $40 that day and what I got was Samgyeopsal-gui , and a bowl of ramen… This entailed about 8 small blan pieces of grilled pork belly a bowl of over cooked rice that had a weird taste (I love almost all kinds of rice) a bowl of ramen which was under cooked and poorly flavored.. (anything noodles are my favorite) there was Romain for the grilled pork belly but it was poorly prepared. It was just 5 pieces of extremely long leafs that looked like they were just ripped off and neatly stacked on a plate. The traditional way of eating the grilled pork belly is the leaf with one or two pieces of meat some rice and kimchi and pretty much whatever on the table that you would like to add put on top of this palm sized leaf. The leaf I got from here was so large in comparison that using 1 piece of meat some rice kimchi and sprouts I used two leafs that I had to tear apart multiple times and couldn’t even use half of the leaf. And the bowl of ramen wasn’t a lot at all like one bag of the Nissan ramen at Walmart you get for 50 cents, no it wasn’t those noodles they tasted like they had potential they were just handled with out care to how much they charge customers for the disappointment.. Now compare that to when I was in Korea, I would have spent $10 for all you can eat grilled pork belly that I cook, and a bowl of ramen at that size cooked wonderfully would have been about 4 bucks maybe cheaper depending on where I went. Who ever owns this store, I’m sorry for the bad review, please get back to the roots of taking pride in what you are selling.. when I was in Korea I got a huge bowl of Jjajangmyeon for 8 bucks by a man who spent $20,000 at a school just to learn the art behind the dish. Literally it was only for that dish now he runs a Jjajangmyeon shop. It was the best I’ve ever had

Santouka Ramen – Menu with Prices – 665 Paularino Ave, Costa Mesa

This ramen spot is located inside of Mitsuwa Marketplace and the parking situation is horrendous on Monday (national holiday). There were so many cars waiting for cars to leave their parking spots and people milling about. Even the parking structure was full. Inside the marketplace, the food court is packed. They have many restaurants, offering sushi, ramen, udon, and more. There are tables and bar seating that were all full, so make sure you secure a table while waiting for your food. Also, they are CASH ONLY. At Hokkaido Ramen, they have 2 main menus: the Ramen menu and the Combination menu. The Ramen menu consists of 4 different soup flavors (Salt, Soy Sauce, Miso, and Spicy Miso) and 3 different ramen styles (Regular, Char Siu (extra pork), and Toroniku (pork cheek)). On the Combination menu, they have the same 4 soup flavors and 6 different combos (comes with rice bowl, ramen & flavored egg). Combo A is the Negi Rice Bowl (green onions, radish sprouts, tofu, bonito, seaweed), Combo B is the Sake & Ikura Rice Bowl (grilled salmon, salmon roe, radish sprouts), Combo C is the Natto Rice Bowl (fermented soy beans, green onions), Combo D is the Char Siu Rice Bowl (char siu, green onions, sesame seeds), Combo E is white rice, and Combo F is the Mentaiko Rice Bowl (spicy cod roe & egg salad). They also offer all the rice bowls as side dishes. Prices depend on the size you order (S, M, L) and the type of combo or soup flavor. What’s nice is that pretty much all the restaurants here have their menu items on display. Santouka is no exception. This is really convenient for comparing portion sizes and what looks appetizing and what doesn’t. We ordered 1 Spicy Miso ramen (medium), 1 D Combo (Spicy Miso ramen + Char Siu rice bowl), 1 F Combo (Spicy Miso ramen + Mentaiko rice bowl), 1 Sake & Ikura Rice Bowl (side dish), and 1 Soy Sauce ramen (medium). Food took about around 30 minutes to arrive. Ramen itself was very delicious. I didn’t think it was spicy at all and although we all ordered medium sizes, it was very filling. Broth is rich, flavorful, and creamy. The char siu is good and tender, but not the best I’ve had (try the perfectly juicy and tender char siu at HiroNori in Irvine). And they give you 2 thin pieces. The rice bowls look small, but are quite a lot, especially if you have ramen as well. They’re all pretty tasty and definitely worth the price if you purchase as a combo. TL;DR: If you’re looking for a good ramen spot with great broth and noodles that overall, hits the spot, come to Santouka. Prices are fair ($10-15 for ramen, $13-17 for combos) and they take cash only. Keep in mind how crowded it gets at Mitsuwa and be expected to wait a while.

Viet Xpress – Menu with Prices – 2121 98 St NW, Edmonton

This place just opened up and is across the parking lot of superstore, right next to burger priest. I’m not a huge pho fan – but my boyfriend loves it. We usually go to hung phat and although I don’t like pho all that much, I am a big fan of hot and sour/Tom yum kinds of soups. They didn’t have anything like this on their menu, so I decided to try the “southern Vietnamese noodles” which was said to come with bbq pork, shrimp, chicken, and squid. My boyfriend got the 6 colour vermicelli bowl and we shared an order of green onion cake. Appy – for green onion cake it was satisfactory. Not the best, but not the worst. For my main meal – the broth had no flavour and my bowl basically consisted of noodles with a few select pieces of meat and vegetables. Seriously. I’ll upload a photo of all the meat I could find in my soup before I started eating (note after taking the pictures and eating, I found 2 more pieces of meat – 1 small piece of chicken and 1 small piece of gristle pork). My boyfriends meal came with a half cup of fish sauce so I decided to throw that into my soup since it was flavourless. It definitely added some flavour, but still wasn’t good. I didn’t even eat half. My boyfriend said his vermicelli bowl was just okay. He pointed out that they barely gave him any meat and that a big portion of the meat they did give, was very fatty. It was also kind of pricey at $16.99 for what you got. Over all, we will not be going back there again. The amount of bbq pork in my “bbq pork” named soup was really laughable.

The Silver Ballroom – Menu with Prices – 4701 Morganford Rd, St. Louis

FOOD and PINBALL are life, and they do indeed go well together! The Silver Ballroom features “Party Bear Pizza and Tiny Chef,” where you can get personal pizzas or THE BEST KOREAN PORK around town. Do yourself a favor and get the Char Siu pork or char siu tofu in taco or rice bowl form and you will be unreal happy. Even the Char Siu tofu is unbelievable, as I almost mistook the tofu for meat it’s just that good. Not only is the pork cooked slowly and several times through the day, but you get a LOT of it in your order! You will be craving this Char Siu forever just like I do. My go to order is char siu pork, kimchi and (spicy) dragon sauce on flour tortillas. These super fat tacos are heavenly, and totally worth paying for. Also they sell nice Australian meat pies behind the bar, and sometimes they have special kinds like “Sugarfire pulled pork BBQ” or “Philly Steak” meat pies which are really nice with a beer, (this is separate from party bear pizza and tiny chef) and spicy “circle jerky” beef jerky, but the Korean food is really the star of the silver ballroom. If you like a grunge factor and appreciate punk music, this is the place for you. The owner is Doc, and he has another bar in St. Ann called “The Waiting Room” with a lot of pinball machines too. He floats between the two bars to maintain the machines and also hang out with people since he is totally the resident pinball doctor. The Silver Ballroom features pinball games like Batman, Dracula, Ghostbusters, The Munsters, The Sopranos, Monster Bash, and a ton more. This bar also offers men’s and women’s pinball leagues- so if you love pinball, call the bar and ask for Doc or Andy to find out when the next season starts! If there’s a “Cheers” gone grunge and punk, this is it- where if you stay around long enough and keep coming back, everybody will know your name.

Minh Chau Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 1318 9 Ave SE, Calgary

Are you Pho real? Ohh, bad pun. Awful way to start a review, but I went there anyways. I stopped by this weird little place last night after absolutely crushing myself in the gym. I feel it’s important that the reader understands that I was feeling extremely manly and also very hungry. The guy at the front door was incredibly attentive and got us seated right away. I ordered what I normally get when I go for Vietnamese: Vermicelli noodles with spring rolls, shredded pork, char grilled pork and char grilled shrimps. I was feeling a little tense, so I picked up a Tiger beer as well. Decor was … well, confusing. It looks kind of like an upscale truck stop in there. Maybe that doesn’t do it justice, but it WAS clean. So.. there’s that. Don’t go here if you’re an atmosphere glutton. Now, I don’t think our server was Vietnamese. In fact I have no idea what he was. He was just large, and friendly and very good at his job. Well done, man of mysterious ethnicity – well done. When my meal came it was large, hot and full of delicious meats – just he way I like it. I immediately doused it in fish sauce, hot sauce and whatever that brown sauce is (as I normally do). And then, dear reader, I ATE IT. I ate the whole thing. I ate it with chopsticks like a champion. I shoveled that vermicelli in my mouth like it was the last bowl on God’s green earth. Had one of the ladies I was with tried to steal a spring roll I would have probably gnawed her fingers off – that’s how famished I was. And by the end, I was full. I was pleased. Joy coursed through my veins. So, on the whole this is pretty standard Vietnamese. There wasn’t anything special about it, though like another writer pointed out their meat is really well done. I’d definitely recommend this place if you’re in the mood for some Viet in Inglewood.

Boulder Pho – Menu with Prices – 2855 28th St, Boulder

Dad and I had a craving for Vietnamese after a long hike in the mountains. I love a good vermicelli bowl (or “grilled noodle bowl” per the menu) so given Boulder Pho’s ratings decided to try. Suffice to say, I wouldn’t recommend. Service: Sat immediately, but had to flag down for the order. Given how not busy it was, the food took awhile. Received apps and dinner all at once, had to go up to the counter to ask where our drinks were (a beer and tea). We received the drinks well after the food arrived, and were charged for everything. Fine, but it’s weird to get a pot of tea after sitting for a half hour with water and after the food arrives. Never got checked on after the food was delivered. Went to the counter to pay, waited to pay while he cleaned tables, sat a couple. Another party arrived, he still didn’t ring me up, he chose to greet the new people, wash tables, seat them. This happened three times with new people arriving and me trying to pay. A note to the waiter: the person about to pay is about to tip. I shouldn’t wait at your counter for 15 minutes to do so. Food: If you like spaghetti noodles chopped into one inch pieces as “vermicelli noodles” then sure. Never have I had my noodles chopped into pieces. It was exceedingly difficult to eat with chopsticks. The noodles were also about spaghetti thickness, which was strange. Not a deal-breaker overall, but I think of this dish as a delicate noodle dish. The pork in the bowl was actually thin sliced pork, fried/charred to oblivion, and not cut properly. You’d pick up one bit of pork and get the entire thing connected by tendon. Not appetizing, and again, not made for chopsticks. The egg roll on top was the saving grace. Not remarkable, but had flavor. Overall the ‘noodle bowl’ was bland / burnt when you could get a bite. We also got the spring rolls. They were again filled with this spaghetti noodle. The sauce was the best part. Maybe their pho is the signature, but the service could use a LOT of work, and the noodle bowls should be removed from the menu.

Queen on Wheels Foodtruck and Catering – Menu with Prices – 1515 Poydras St, New Orleans

Parked in front of the Entergy building at lunch time today. Delicious!! Best value ever. Got the special, which consisted of two, not one, two grilled pork chops and a quarter chicken (I opted for dark meat), white beans and rice with sausage, and four buttery Texas toast points. All for the low, low price of $10. What?! Three big pieces of meat for $10? How does he make a profit? I probably shouldn’t care. Don’t walk, run. Everything was on point. The meat was flavorful and had that just grilled char taste. The beans were seasoned well and the rice as it should be. And the toatexas toast added a nice touch. Not just great on quantity, but quality too. In addition, the owner was very pleasant, and gave out huge samples of the food before buying. Ive never seen a food truck do that. He stands by his product. Also, his homemade bbq sauce is great too.

Mama’s Kitchen Taiwanese Food – Menu with Prices – 10820 Abbotts Bridge Rd, Duluth

My absolute favorite ever since I moved to John’s Creek. They have not disappointed me yet! (Located inside johns creek hmart food court, alllll the way in the corner) Seafood noodle soup (spicy or not spicy) – delicious and portion is pretty big! All their noodles soups a pretty good. My fav is the seafood. They also have beef, pork and preserved veggie and with option of regular noodle or rice noodle. Fried pork chop on rice – portion is huge and pork chop is seasoned very well. Very savory dish Boiled pork dumplings – very flavorful and bursting with juice and meat inside Taiwanese style spicy boiled fish – slightly pricier than their other menu items, but worth it. Very aromatic and delicious Taiwanese rice noodle (curry or regular) – also a must try item. It’s just plain good. Chicken nuggets: ok, I might have lied when I said I haven’t been disappointed. I got the nuggets once and found it to be very dry. Maybe over fried? But it’s ok, I’m willing to overlook it because everything else I ordered was great. A lot more items to try on the menu and they have a vegetarian menu too! I’m actually sitting here waiting on my fish dumplings and noodle soup as I write this….

Osaka Sushi – Menu with Prices – 3685 W Henrietta Rd, Rochester

This place used to be good. Now please just avoid it! 1. As a buffet restaurant, this place tries to fill you up with rice, noodle and water, not in a subtle way. I ordered avocado sushi with a smear of avocado, seafood ramen with tons of noodles and two tiny pieces of imitation crab, eel rolls with a paper thin eel on a giant rice ball, etc. They don’t want to sell good food. They are trying to make you feel full. 2. The service is terrible as well. I ordered tempura that I never got. When I tried to order some more, the server told me that I needed to finish the rice bowl. For god sake, I couldn’t finish the eel rice bowl because it’s just a full bowl of rice with two pieces of paper thin eels on it. At least let me order some other food to go with the rice! 3. The worst part is that the food tastes not fresh. The teriyaki eel has gone sour. Again, I left two pieces because I can’t force myself to eat stale food! Overall, I had a lettuce salad, two shrimps, four avocado rolls, eel rice bowl, seafood ramen, four eel rolls. I paid $16 and a stomachache later that day.

Yogis Grill – Menu with Prices – 75 E Rivulon Blvd #108, Gilbert

This is not authentic Japanese food. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way I’ll give a review of my own experience. I ordered a teriyaki bowl with all white meat. This dish is the most basic of Japanese dishes an American fast food establishment can make. Chicken, rice, scallions, and teriyaki sauce. I got all of that in my dish. The rice was hot and perfectly cooked, the scallions were cut fresh, and the teriyaki sauce tasted like teriyaki sauce. Now for the bad news…the meat. The bowl was topped with what looked like a thin (as in almost flat) chicken breast cutlet that had char-grill marks as if it had been chargrilled. The breast was hot but extremely dry. I’ve seen this lame attempt at chicken before at other restaurants who use one of those two_sided sandwich grills to reheat a precooked piece of chicken. It’s then sprinkled with chargrilled flavoring to fool you into thinking you’re eating a freshly grilled piece of meat. I took it back to the counter and asked if it was made fresh and thecashier told me it was. I then asked if she could clarify whether the chicken had already been cooked before I ordered it and then reheated. She confirmed that this was the case. I explained that this process will always dry out the meat. So she offered to cook another and confirmed to me that they would start with a raw piece of chicken. As it turned out, the new order turned out just as dry. I took a few bites and threw it away and walked out.

Ono Hawaiian BBQ – Menu with Prices – 926 E Ontario Ave #102, Corona

Called in an order for pickup about 45 minutes before close. We arrived as they were bagging it and the drive home was only about 6 minutes. When we sat down to eat we found that the Chicken Katsu was super dry, yet somehow also had a literal puddle of water in the box with the veggies. We also ordered a BBQ ribs plate, the rice was dry, the Mac salad was warm and the ribs were very greasy (and also somehow dry/overcooked). I had asked for them to split the plate half with ribs and half with kalua pork. They said they couldn’t do it (ok fine rules and whatever) so I asked for a side of it instead to which they said they can’t sell sides of kalua pork… I guess I had to buy an entire other plate to get the pork? So I just didn’t get it. Overall a strange and disappointing encounter. And we felt terrible after eating half and ended up trashing about half of it. They still had customers but weren’t super busy and it wasn’t close enough to closing for them to be putting out crap food (honestly food quality shouldn’t change close to closing anyway).

Danny’s Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 11096 Mines Rd, Laredo

I had an expectation that our waitress would speak English but there was a language issue and we were handed over to another waitress whom didn’t communicate very well with us any better. We were treated like taboo & no one seemed to want to come attend our table due to us only speaking English. The employees seemed to be Mexican nationals with work visas. I paid $8.99 for a tiny 1/2 cup of guacamole salad that consisted of part of a leaf of lettuce, a tiny slice of tomato cut in two halfs and smashed up avocado. It had NO flavor and I got a tiny bit of some greasy chip pieces thrown on the table to eat it with. My husband got a nacho plate that was mediocre and not what the menu reflected. We paid $20 for two waters, a half cup of guacamole and a few chips with meat on them on a plate. I won’t even mention the bathroom.
