I love Jamaican food and Due to all the rave reviews I was excited to try this place out! Not to mention the proximity to my home made it especially appealing. I arrived to a very clean, modern aesthetic so I was impressed and proud, althiygh nit Jamaican so nit sure where that oride stemmed from, I digress. The area would suggest such an ambience however anyone that is an adamant Jamaican cuisine lover, such as self, is aware that such impeccable aesthetics is a RARE find. At this point I am pumped to try this food. I must admit the aura of pessimism did come over me. This is too good to be true…this does not look authentic enough…my mind wandered. Once I saw the older Jamaican cashier with “good eating” hips, my mind felt a bit more at ease. I decided to go with a classic to play it safe I ordered Ox Tails it came with two suggested sides or I had the option to choose from anything from the sides menu. I selected rice and peas and cabbage, the Jamaican staples once again. I was told rice and peas would be extra. Which surprised me since that is the staple that typically comes with Jamaican food. Not to mention rice and peas are some of the most cost efficient foods that one can prepare. None the less I paid the $18+ for the meal with high hopes. I went to the ladies room which was simple and clean. When I exited the ladies room, the cashier mentioned she was looking for me and that my food was ready. Speedy service…was that too fast, I thought. In true Jamaican fashion my food was shown to me prior to leaving. I looked up and that’s when I saw her….a WHITE or HISPANIC cook!!!! My stomach flipped. The race is not a factor yet the authenticity of the Jamaican fare certainly was called into question. So you mean to telk me this is a recipe based kitchen? Not a Jamaican taste tested, home, scratch cooked restaurant. That was my second clue of what was to come. I get home still trying to hang onto my optimism since I did pay $20 for this meal. I am all in at this point. Wellllll…I opened the box and saw that there was a “scoop” of rice. Not a healthy distribution of rice and peas under your ox tails that i have become accustomed to expect from Jamaican cuisine. This is what I was upcharged for?! The rice was overcooked and stuck together with pea mush and had no flavor. The cabbage was not Jamaican style with onions and carrots. The cabbage had zero flavor or seasoning. The ox tails were tender yet too salty and I only had three ox tails. The ox tails had fat trimmed which was nice however they were on the smaller side. I was disappointed to say the least! Given the area the reviews make sense. The customers are not very knowledgeable on what good Jamaican cuisine is. I will be driving all the way to the Dallas fair ground area next time I am in need of good Jamaican cusine. It atleast is worth the crappy location and long wait for food. The two stars is for the modern clean decor Jamaican restaurants TAKE NOTE! But since the main point of restaurant is the FOOD 2 stars was the most i could give. I wanted to love this spot yet it fell short

Harper’s Corner – Menu with Prices – 1236 NW 21 Ave, Gainesville

The restaurant is as cute as it can be. It’s clean and inviting and there is ample seating as well. The food is authentic and quite delicious. We ordered peas and rice, pumpkin rice, cabbage, curry goat, oxtails, and plantains. The rice was dryer than I’m accustomed to, but I asked for some gravy and it was of course perfect after that. I really enjoyed my visit and I like the concept of what’s being offered culturally and collectively at this establishment. I will certainly return to Harper’s Corner for my Jamaican cuisine and soul food fix because they can handle it. My experience all and all was 4.5 stars.

Island Breeze – Menu with Prices – 2225 Mosquito Beach Rd, Charleston

I ordered the oxtail plate and my Mother in law ordered the seafood trio; fish, shrimp, and scallops. The oxtail plate was very generous with 4 pieces of tender oxtail, a heaping amount of rice and peas, with a side off cabbage salad and sweet plantain. The plate was very authentic and 1 of the best Jamaican cuisines I have had in Charleston. The cabbage salad however tasted a bit more pickled than I would like. Needless to say I finished the whole plate. The atmosphere was Jamaican themed playing Reggae songs that we all know and love. The staff and owners were friendly and greeted us with a smile. I look forward to going back to dance, garlic crab night, or to just to relax on their patio with a cold one. Sorry I didn’t take any pictures.

Irie Vibes rva – Menu with Prices – 1221 N Laburnum Ave, Richmond

Was very disappointed with the food, oxtails cabbage rice and beans. My husband got curry goat with cabbage and rice and beans. We both felt like the rice was not good. It had a very weird after taste. The cabbage was fine but it could have been better. It might of been overcooked because it was made wilted and mushy. The oxtails were thin and barely had meat on them. I was so disappointed again. I wish I tried the sorrel and the plantain but both were grossly overpriced. I do like your location even though it’s hot as balls inside. I couldn’t eat there, it would have had to be takeout. Which proved to be 70% nasty rice. That’s not even an exaggeration for clarity, there literally was more rice than oxtails and cabbage combined. My husband plate was more gravy than curry goat. So he had what looked like slop to say the least. Eew. Overall I was let down by the other comments and the photos posted. I thought I was eating some authentic jamaican cuisine. But that won’t it, sis. It wasn’t good a little bit. It just wasn’t hitting on anything and I’m out about $30 & some change. Needless to say I’m off of it for a while. Tried this place because it is open later and stocked with oxtails and goat when we requested it. Not coming back. Sorry but for real though.

Smokin Chikin – Menu with Prices – 1820 Tiny Town Rd Suite A, Clarksville

I really like this place. It’s too bad I don’t live near it as I would frequent it. I ate there with my wife and two children. Cashier was super nice and helpful. On top of lots of variety of sauces for your chicken, they have lots of well chosen sides that I feel would allow most to find something that suits them. My wife got pulled BBQ Chicken with Island Fried Rice and Mac & Cheese. She enjoyed everything but the rice (to be fair, she isn’t a rice fan in general). I got 1/4 White Chicken with Jamaican Jerk sauce (OMG, AWESOME!), Island Fried Rice and Loaded BBQ Chicken Fries. As a lover of rice, I was pleasantly surprised as the rice was perfectly cooked. If you like a little heat definitely get the Jamaican Jerk sauce! With that being said, we were most impressed with the kids meals. They got pulled chicken spread on top of mac and cheese on a plate. It was SUPER yummy! My wife and I each stole a bite from the kids. If I’m in the area again, that’ll definitely be one of my sides.

Patty World – Menu with Prices – 8959 164th St, Jamaica

I tried this little Jamaican place for lunch today and got the mini jerk chicken lunch which came in a small takeout container but was completely filling. The chicken was really good (moist & tender) but not spicy enough. The gravy was excellent but I would definitely get extra next time. It came with some cooked cabbage that tasted like it had been cooked with cloves, two fried plantains and some rice with peas, corn and carrots. All the sides were quite good and I am now wondering if I can get just an order of the fried plantains with gravy…that would be a really good lunch!

Little Jamaica Menu with Prices 917 Laney Walker Blvd, Augusta

I am very fond of Jamaican cuisine, so of course I would check this place out and it definitely did not disappoint!!! The place is unassuming on the outside. It was several take out spot before this place. The few times I did stop in they weren’t open or didn’t have the items I wanted. I caught them today as the owner, Mr. Carlton, was opening up for business. He was very welcoming and apologized for any inconvenience I had experienced thus far. He even brought me out a chair to sit in and wait for my order to be prepared. All of the dinners come with rice and peas, plantains, string beans, cabbage, and mixed vegetables. I don’t like plantains and I expressed that to him. He was reluctant about not substituting the plantains for more cabbage, but he did it just for me. I was very appreciative!!! He said that the food would be great and it totally was!!! The portion was smaller than other places I frequent around town but every morsel of food I placed in my mouth was exploding with so much flavor!!! I normally have leftovers for later on, I ate every piece of food in that plate, except the bones of the curry goat, of course!!! I was thinking about going back and getting another plate of food that day, it was that good!!! I can’t wait to try more things on the menu and eat like a fat pig again!!! LOL!!!!

Caribbean Citchen – Menu with Prices – 10500 W McNichols Rd, Detroit

I wanted to rate it 4.95 only because of a formality. Read review thoroughly to understand. The food and the service is the bomb….don’t get me wrong! The staff is nice and accommodating.! I often order the curry goat, oxtail, jerk chicken, cabbage and rice and peas. Sometimes the ackee and salt fish! Restaurant is totally consistent in taste and temperature of food as well as authenticity of Jamaican fare! (Married to a Jamaican. He cooks it and we have visited many other Caribbean places) Not overpriced but deliver satisfaction almost always! Recommend ordering over the phone because line can sometimes be intimidating. Parking lot stays full and May look super busy sometimes and may not be. So don’t give up. Only complaint is that the “lobby” is dark which may make it feel gloomy and drab. There is no place to sit to eat but looks as if they have been working on a little small area for some time that won’t accommodate many people. One last thing the food is so good people cannot wait to get home to eat it so they eat in their cars in the lot causing only street parking to be available and a little walk to get to the door.

Curly’s Caribbean – Menu with Prices – 1892 Abbey Rd, West Palm Beach

I love Curly’s!! The food is readily prepared very quickly, (hardly any wait time!) the staff is friendly and outgoing. More important the food tastes like home! Authentic Jamaican food, seasoned just right, the meat is tender … they take pride in their menu. I can’t recommend anything in particular- I’ve been coming here for 4 years- EVERYTHING is delicious. Especially great because they open earlier than most Jamaican restaurants in the area. Sunday’s are cash only :/ I wish they sold *pork* stew peas, they have beef stew peas. They only negative I can find is it’s in a bad neighborhood/strip plaza, but safe as far as I can tell! Also not so much a sit down to eat place – perfect for take-out!

People’s Choice Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 575 Brooks Ave, Rochester

The were right down the street so I ordered 3 lunch specials -1 jerk chicken and 2 curry chickens- for myself and each of my parents. It was inconvenient that they had no signage on the outside stating the establishment is cash only. I only found this out from a sign on the counter after ordering. There is an ATM machine inside the establishment, of course with a fee. While my parent’s food was fine. I was only given about 2 tablespoons of rice and peas and a lot of cabbage!! Didn’t even get one pea in the rice. It’s as if they ran out of rice for my plate so tried to sub in the cabbage. I don’t mind cabbage but once you pile on the gravy, the food gets a bit soupy

Ms. B’s Southern Soul Food – Menu with Prices – 676 St Andrews Rd, Columbia

There were not a lot of reviews but we decided to try Ms. B’s anyway. The food was delicious, staff friendly, restaurant and restrooms were clean. I had the turkey wings, Mac & cheese, cabbage, rice & gravy, and corn bread. My husband also had the turkey wings, but with black eye peas and Mac & cheese as his sides with the rice and gravy and cornbread. The turkey wings were seasoned well and falling off the bone. They were so good we overate and split another plate between the three of us. My son had the fried chicken and enjoyed it too. The vegetables were good too. On our extra plate we had the fried okra as a different side. We’re new to the Elgin/Columbia area and are happy we’ve found a restaurant with great food, portions, and service.

Silva Bowl Caribbean Grill – Menu with Prices – 2603 Simpson Rd, Kissimmee

Tried this place today for the first time as I drive by it almost everyday and the reviews were very good. I ordered the jerk chicken with rice and peas and cabbage. To begin with the place is clean and I was the only person there ordering on a Saturday about 6pm. I was not impressed by the food at all. I got a chicken leg which I do not eat chicken legs and two other small pieces of chicken. The chicken was alright did have some flavor not too spicy but it tasted as it was sitting for awhile and not freshly prepared. They may have cooked it this morning but you could tell wasn’t fresh out the pan! Cabbage hands down horrible they added red peppers which gave it a horrible taste and the peppers consumed the taste of the cabbage. The peas and rice was decent but I rather the Golden crust. For $9 I should of saved my money and drove to the Caribbean Sunshine Bakery in Orlando you wait for your food because they cook it fresh and it never disappoints! I will not return to this place my search continues or I just need to keep driving to Orlando to the Sunshine Caribbean Bakery!

Porters’ House – Menu with Prices – 1233 N 3rd St, Harrisburg

I first started eating Jamaican food down in the D.C. area at a small restaurant in the city run by a woman who referred to herself as everyone’s Jamaican grandma. I’ve missed good Jamaican food since I lived down there. Then I found Porter’s House at the market. They have lots of good options. I go there for lunch. They offer entree options in three sizes. I like the medium for a food filling meal. For $8 you get a meat and two sides. The default sides are rice, plantains, vegetables. I always opt for callaloo and cabbage. Both are excellent. For the meats, I’ve tried the oxtails, curried chicken, curried goat, and jerk chicken. They’re all equally good – it just depends on the mood you’re in and what you like. I like the jerk chicken. Be sure to opt for the sauce because it’s sweet and spicy and flavorful. The meat is always tender and the outside is perfectly charred. The goat curry is savory and the meat is incredibly tender. I’ve never had anything bad at this location. If you like fried plantains (the sweet type) this is your place. They’re worth getting all by themselves to have for dessert. The meat pies are also flaky and yummy. And a lunch bargain if you’re saving pennies and want something warm and tasty. The portions are large and a good deal for the money. If you get a large, be sure you’re sharing with a friend or you are super, super hungry. I had to convince my husband to help me finish the medium one I got just recently. I went in starving and thinking the small wouldn’t be enough . . . barely finished the medium with a little help. I do try to buy from other stalls at the market just to keep things interesting, but this is my favorite.
