I’ve never had the privilege of posting such an early review of a restaurant on Yelp. This will be the one I got to say that I found first. So right up front, this is not what most would think of as traditional Mexican food in that, it isn’t dumbed down plates of various tortillas and meats covered in cheese and sauce. They don’t have beans on the menu. This is really a regional restaurant with the menu being driven by the cuisine of the Sinaloa region of Mexico, which is why it is virtually all seafood. And it is incredible! The place is neatly decorated and clean. Service was first class. Good selection of beers and tequila. I had their torre Culichi. Insane! Deep, complex flavors to go with delicate and perfectly executed sea fare like scallops, prawns and octopus. Looking forward to exploring more of the menu. New favorite, can’t miss spot in Denver!

The Ale Apothecary Menu with Prices 30 SW Century Dr #140, Bend

You’re coming here for the beer and the beer only. No food, no shuffleboard, none of that. They’re open only three days a week, just for a few hours. It’s a small operation, very simple as taprooms go. The beer, on the other hand, is some of the most complex and beautiful you’ll ever get to try. You can range the wide world over and might only try a few things anything like what TAA offers. This was easily one of the best beer-drinking days of my entire life, and these five stars go for the beer (which you could drink elsewhere), as well as what happens here. Like I said, it’s small. Seating for about 20. Couple barstools, few tables. One nice clean bathroom. They work here–they’re aging beer in barrels, they’re conditioning finished beer in bottles. They fill bottles and pack beer for shipment. The brewing happens up in the hills, where the beer almost never touches metal; they transfer, condition, store, and ferment beers in wooden containers of various kinds. They have to boil in metal, but otherwise it’s all wood all the time until it lands in glass. That stuff is offsite from the taproom, but you can see the barrels around the corner from the bar. These beers are so complex and interesting and so far beyond 99% of the stuff you see anywhere. Deep sour and funk, deep fruit, deep barrel character. Crazy ingredients (pine needles!) in some stuff. The flavors all work together to make something big and engaging, it’s never just a who-knows experiment with these guys, ever. The beers cost more, and even a couple of fairly experienced-looking beer fans in the room didn’t seem to click with what they tried. But they were heavily outnumbered by geeks who drove hundreds of miles to get here and fall even more deeply in love with these beers. Can’t wait to crack my take-home bottles and go get more.

Secchu Yokota ????? – Menu with Prices – 199 E 3rd St, New York

This review is long time coming. I’ve had the pleasure of going to Secchu Yokota twice and the dishes and service were amazing both times. As a Japanese, you think we’d be used to delicate tastes and impeccable presentation but this place was beyond our expectations. Everything is fresh, cooked right in front of you and seriously ‘oishii (delicious)!’ That’s really the only way I can describe it. Oh! They have a great selection of sake too. The tempura is very delicate and comes with a selection of condiments. Just thinking of it makes me want to go there again…The service is impeccable. Attentive but not intrusive, and professional all the way. There are 2 seatings per evening (6pm and 8:30pm) and the restaurant is cozy with 8 seats so reservation is a must. I highly recommend this restaurant!

Cevallos Lofts – Menu with Prices – 301 E Cevallos St, San Antonio

Southtown livin’! The Cevallos Lofts are a fairly new apartment complex located right next to La Tuna and Blue Star. It’s a pretty large place, with a nice pool in the center of the apartment complex. The apartment complex has limited parking for the number of residents who live here. It can be especially frustrating when there’s an event going on at Blue Star or around downtown! Fortunately, they have lots of bike racks. The complex is always clean, picked up, and feels safe. There is ample security to keep things safe around here. The common areas are always nice and well lit. They offer a gym and areas to hang out with large tables and chairs. The pool is nice, with lots of places to lounge out in the sun. It’s located right in the center of the complex, with a few different areas to swim or hang out. The pool water is clean, and the place is picked up. The units are attractively decorated, with modern appliances, and plenty of room. The fixtures all work, and it’s a nice complex! It’s only a few years old, so all the interior stuff looks sharp! The best part of this complex is its proximity to cool places to hang out! It’s stumbling distance from La Tuna and right across the tracks from the Blue Star Arts Complex. Right around the corner is Say Si- another arts group. The train tracks go right behind this complex, but you get used to the rumble of the Texas Eagle chugging by on the tracks behind this place. The complex is pet friendly! Woof! Meow!

Soul1 Studio – Menu with Prices – 17961 Sky Park Cir unit A, Irvine

Edit: had to take my review down to 1 star. Without warning, there was a schedule change and two of my favorite instructors are gone (Joisa and Ana). Ruckus and Ashley are still there and are great but not enough to meet all my fitness needs. (Only 2 days /week and the new class times weren’t convenient for me). Since there was no notice of these changes, management did refund my money for the remaining classes I purchased in advance. I was excited for the opening of this studio because I have taken Joisa’s classes at other locations, and she had always been one of my favorite instructors. Her classes are energetic, upbeat, and physically vigorous, but so fun they seem to pass too quickly. I purchased a class pack, but i realized I’m going to burn through it in no time, because ALL the instructors are AMAZING. Seriously. Joisa’s hip hop cardio and kickboxing classes are a favorite, as are Ruckus’ dance fitness and Ashley’s hip hop 8. I’m looking forward to trying the others as well. There are a variety of classes – hip hop cardio, kickboxing, pilates, sculpt (weights), stretch sculpt, and reggaeton fusion. The studio itself is very nice any clean. I particularly like that it’s a long, narrow room, with a wall of mirrors. There is room for about 3 long rows. That means that even if the class is completely full, you will have a clear view of the instructor. Being on the short side, I hate deep studios because I can never see the instructor from the back of the room. I strongly recommend

The Space Between – Menu with Prices – 222 W Hubbard Street, Lower Level SE, Chicago

From exploring the website, I gathered that the organization was independent and intentional, a nice break from the corporate studios in Chicago. Before class, Catherine connected with students to understand what muscles or areas her audience was interested in working on during class. Towels, mats, and blocks are provided for free and mat positions are selected before class even begins. Brilliant idea that allows instructor to control mat spacing and students to select positioning without any communication. The space itself is quaint and beautifully decorated. Some of the studio walls are built with exposed brick, the are chandeliers hanging from the ceiling with dimly lit bulbs, and candle filled lanterns are scattered around the floor. While aesthetically pleasing, the dark room encouraged me to focus on my movement and individual practice rather than the external environment. As the studio grows, I have a couple suggestions to improve student experiences. I encourage the website to maintain instructor bios to allow students to understand teacher’s styles before selecting a class. I found the spacing in between mats insufficient and at times worried the woman in front of me may accidentally kick my head during inversion play. The lockers are quite small to fit work bags and there was only one bathroom and one changing room. Overall the space was beautiful and warming and class was a memorable and eccentric experience ? I appreciate the small scale of the studio and realize some of my suggestions are dependent on space and resources. Cheers to the female entrepreneur who opened the space between!

Piccadilly Bar – Menu with Prices – 4 S Cascade Ave, Colorado Springs

First thought…. Beautiful space! This hotel bar is very well decorated. Such attention to detail and class. Just what Colorado Springs needs, a place that can impress visitors as well as be enjoyed by locals. I expected the drinks to be expensive, I was wrong. My cocktail was $6.50. The cocktails on the menu average $11. The Food Bar Menu looked really reasonable also, though I did not order anything. For the beer drinkers, there are MANY beers on tap. The bartenders were nothing less than perfect! Welcoming, professional, and tentative! Such great service! Come check out this gorgeous new location. I will definitely be back!

Paleteria La Michoacana – Menu with Prices – 1552 E Grand Ave, Des Moines

This is a gem you’d find somewhere in Baja or East L.A., only you’re in Des Moines…so you can enjoy all their amazing stuff without worrying about getting murdered. Everything about this spot is legit. They make all their helados and paletas in-house and have flavors you won’t find in your average ice cream shop. Mango con chile, tequila, pepino con chile, gazpacho…I’m impressed. They also serve food – standard taqueria fare. Their food menu is in Spanish AND English, so no worries if no hablas Español. The girls working are all very nice, and are happy to translate frozen treat flavors for you if you’re not sure what you’re looking at. Ciruela threw me for a curve, and I was okay with that…prune is not an ice cream flavor I’m down for now or probably ever. The tequila helado is BOMB. The fresa is made with FRESH blended strawberries, and you’ll definitely, absolutely be able to taste the difference when you try it. Definitely get a small serving…cones are $2.25 but they’re massive. We’ll be back to this spot regularly. Hands down the best ice cream in Des Moines, and my new favorite.

Gold Rail Bar – Menu with Prices – 1114 N Pacific Ave, Glendale

OMG!!! My husband grew up in Glendale in the 50’s-70’s and had always said this place was a “dive bar”….NOT ANYMORE!! This place is awesome with 24 beer taps, 2 taps on Nitro, 2 wine taps! The part owner is very nice and very friendly (personality plus), which in my book is extra special! Came in for one beer each and ended up staying for two more beers each and a shot of tequila (which was an added surprise)! It was a very quiet night for a Tuesday (which is okay), hopefully more people will come in and check this place out! It’s a great place to hang out and talk about beer, tequila and growing up in Glendale!

Browne Trading Company – Menu with Prices – 260 Commercial St, Portland

Good……gaaawd how I love this place. We stopped in recently as we were walking and exploring the streets of Portland. What a great find this is! The location is near the water, farther back from all the main hustle and bustle. When I first walked in, I noticed that it was on the smaller side but when I realized how amazing all their products were I understood. No need for a huge selection of mediocre when you can have a smaller selection of heaven. I want to eat everything in here. The cheese selection is small but extremely good. There was one cheese in particular, I wish I could remember the name of it but it was rolled in flowers on the outside, that was unlike any cheese I’ve ever had. Sweet, buttery, earthy, musky. Just amazing. They also have a blue that is yellow gold in color. We bought 4 different kinds and all were exceptional. They also had the best smoked salmon I’ve ever had, and that my friends, is no exaggeration. My sister, who is new to eating meat and seafood, had never tried smoked salmon. She ate a sample they had and said she will now travel from NH to Portland to get it and I agree! Wish they could ship it to me in Florida. It was not as fishy as smoked salmon usually is and was buttery, melt in your mouth good. Super delicate. They also have a really good caviar and wine selection. If I lived in Portland I would be here every day. If you love the finer and more delicious things in life, visit this market! You wont be disappointed.

Lucky Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 18 Kirk Ave SW, Roanoke

My husband and I had the BEST experience at Lucky Restaurant. It’s rare for us to go out to eat and genuinely enjoy the food and drinks across the board, but the guys and gals at Lucky are doing great things. Husband ordered a couple beers that were suggested to him and he enjoyed them both. I had a “tequila mule” that was to die for. They make all of their own syrups for the cocktails in house, which is so neat! There wasn’t much in the way of dinner options for a non-meat eater like myself, but I was totally happy with my gnocchi dish. It was served with a mole sauce, which initially made me nervous to order because I haven’t enjoyed mole that much in the past, but this was perfect. The flavors were just right and not too overwhelming. Husband gave the bone marrow appetizer a try and said it was really good! The service was just as great as the food! Everyone was so friendly and attentive- we really didn’t want for anything. Our server let us know that Fortunato is Lucky’s sister restaurant with an Italian flare, so we are definitely going to check it out next. Don’t miss out on this spot!

FreshFin Poké – Menu with Prices – 502 University Ave, Madison

After taking a workout class with my sister, we were really craving a healthy, fresh dish for lunch. Despite it being winter in WI and negative degrees outside, poke was calling our name. Normally, Miko Poke has been my poke place, but we wanted to try a new poke placed today (though, not exactly new as my sister and I have had FreshFin in Milwaukee before). Nonetheless, just like the location in Milwaukee, Madison’s FreshFin is a great place for poke. Clean, modern aesthetic. I love that their condiment bar has a selection of Furikake (Japanese Rice Seasoning) to choose from to add to your poke as desired. I had the Spicy Tuna Signature Bowl. My BF had the Coconut Curry Shrimp Signature Bowl and my sister had the Kailani Signature Bowl. All signature bowls are customizable, which I appreciated. Huge portion sizes (I could barely finish the regular size, was super full and probably would’ve been better off saving some as leftovers). Fresh ingredients. My Spicy Tuna bowl had a tad bit too many jalapeños for my taste, a bit overpowering for me given the delicate flavors of the tuna and all the other ingredients. Next time, I think I would either ask for less or no jalapeños and just rely on the siracha aioli for the spice factor. We also ordered the truffle crab salad, which sounded delicious, but honestly was a bit underwhelming. The ingredients were really fresh, but the flavors were lacking. This doesn’t factor into my rating, but this location is not super convenient for me as I don’t live downtown and it’s hard to find street parking. However, if I were ever in the area again and looking for a fresh, healthy meal, I would definitely keep FreshFin in mind!

The Whisky Attic – Menu with Prices – 4780 W Harmon Ave #12, Las Vegas

If anyone would have told me a year ago I would be writing a review on a Whiskey tasting….I would have told them they’d lost their vertical hold! But over the last year, I have discovered I like the taste of whiskey! Call it age….call it a more advanced palate….whatever you call it….mama likes! I never want to do things without educating myself, so what is a lady to do? Go to a class of course! Seriously….if I could have taken these classes in college….I would have been class Valedictorian! First of all JD was so accommodating, we had a change in our schedule and he came in on an unscheduled night so we could have the class before leaving early the next morning. The Whiskey Attic is located about a 10 minute drive off the strip in a quiet more industrial area. I like to point these things out because I like to know what to expect when driving to unknown areas. We took an Uber and it was easy to get a car to and from the location. JD greeted us at the door and right away we picked up on his brilliance about everything from sports, history and Whiskey of course! Because we were the only two there for this course it was a nice date night but honestly this would have been fun to do as a party, business ice breaker, or just something different. We did the introduction course, and not only did we learn about whiskey but wines, beers, anything you could want to know. And because The Whiskey Attic isn’t trying to sell you product, you get to learn about all varieties, countries, and regions without being pushed to a particular brand. JD walked us through how to taste whiskey and how to drink it! After our class, JD asked us a series of questions and chose a selection of 6 brands he though we would like (the place is beautifully full of whiskey and JD knows where every bottle is) and we commenced tasting his selections! He nailed my tastes down to a tee and I enjoyed every one of the sample! We definitely want to go to the more advanced class next time we are in Las Vegas. I feel much more confident about ordering whiskey when I am out and about knowing what I like because of this class! Loved meeting JD and am looking forward to our next visit!
