Mucho gusto, Takero Mucho! Stellar Yelp reviews pushed us to look past the literal danger of going to the corner of Peoria & Mississippi after dark. Anyone who has lived in big cities elsewhere knows Denver/Aurora’s “bad” areas would feel safe elsewhere. However, people do get shot around here… Our bravery paid off. Of course, we were blessed to park directly in view of the dining room, but I digress. Two things struck us upon walking in. The place was sparkling clean and we were the only gueros present. No matter. Take a minute and examine the decor. A brief glance will miss just how cool their choices are. Our server was quick to bring a highchair, menus, and Mexican cokes. She tolerated my Spanish without giggling. That’s huge. On to the food… My asada plate featured quality beef seasoned right, the best refried beans I’ve had on the Front Range (loaded with flavor), and rice that had not only body, but taste. My house-made tortillas kicked ass. Excelente!!!! The pastor in her taco announced itself loudly as having the right stuff. Her gordita’s masa was on point, and while I’d never order one without meat, the peppers and cheese went together smashingly. One pointer–don’t come here if you’re in a hurry. They take their time cooking the food, and I’m glad they do. It rocks and the prices are right. I can’t wait to go back for my own gorditas and more! 4.5 stars

Lupita’s Bakery & Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 3600 N 19th St, Waco

We stumbled upon this find. There was no meno, but we were told they could make us whatever we wanted….tacos, burritos, gorditas. We decided upon chorizo and egg gorditas in corn with a little cheese. I ordered two for each of us because I was expecting something a little bigger than the size of my palm. I could hear the eggs being scrambled and the sound of working the dough as we waited. The food was amazing. I felt as though I had stumbled upon a friend’s house and her mom was making us pockets of love as she had been taught by her mother. The balance of chorizo to egg was perfect. I debated about 4 or 5 stars, because there is room for improvement, but I can still taste the gorditas and I wish I lived nearby so I could visit again.

Tacqueria San Angel – Menu with Prices – 4005 Sullivant Ave, Columbus

I came out this way looking for Los Chilangos at the recommendation of a friend, but they have now been replaced by (or rebranded as) Taqueria San Angel. It was a short wait for the food, mostly because they were busy and because the food was fresh-cooked, including handmaking the corn tortillas on the spot. My two gorditas were cheap ($6 total), more than enough food for lunch, and most importantly, astoundingly delicious. The al pastor was tasty, the gorditas themselves came with generous helpings of tomato, lettuce, and black bean, and the housemade tortillas were amazing – just slightly charred, but light and delicate. The two salsas that accompanied the gorditas were also good, particularly the salsa verde which was also clearly housemade, being tangy and bright in a way that you rarely encounter from taco truck salsas. There’s a lot of taco trucks in Columbus, and I admit I went to Taqueria San Angel with no particularly high expectations, but I have to say they are probably one of the best in the city. The steady stream of customers that arrived and departed while I was there would certainly seem to indicate that’s an accurate statement.

Taqueria La Central Mexican Grill – Menu with Prices – 806 E Baseline St, San Bernardino

We have been driving by this place forever ever! It is on the corner all by it’s self small and looks a little lonely. It has dine in take out and a drive-thru. We finally decided to stop in a give them a try. We were greeted with a smile and promptly seated with our menus. They make all of your regular mexican food. Like burritos, enchiladas, tortas, hard shell tacos, soft street tacos, sopes, gorditas, rice, and beans. They also have pizza, wings, hamburgers, fries for those that don’t want mexican food. Now this review is on the Torta and Gorditas we had. The Asada was good and not old. The beans and rice were homemade and tasty. The gorditas were good and homemade. The only thing is all of it lacked a little salt. But nothing I can’t add myself We will return to sample other menu items. I will keep U posted ?

UNOS TACOS Y BIRRIA – Menu with Prices – 2929 N 75th Ave STE #31, Phoenix

Came here twice because they had Birria de Chivo on their menu and on the grand opening weekend, we got there too late so they sold out. Held off on my review because I had to try it before posting. Came back for rd. 2 and found out they took it off the menu… so disappointed. Service and cleanliness of when I went was good, I have no complaints. I’ve tried all their tacos and for the most part everything is under seasoned. Tortillas are really good and flavor full but I can’t say the say about the meats. I didn’t like their al pastor at all, their marinade just doesn’t provide the flavors. Carne asada tacos were the better options, but it’s not where I would go for that as it’s still under par. The Birria taco was pretty good the first time. Had to use some salt but the consommé and the aromas really stuck to the Birria making it juicy deliciousness. Second time around it was over cooked and the meat was dried. Their queso tacos did seem to have a better hit on the taste palette. It’s more unique to their location but it still doesn’t hit the spot for me. Salsas had a unique taste but once again, under seasoned. Tacos are loaded to the max so they do match their price point.

Tapatio’s Grill Chicken – Menu with Prices – 614 W Valentine St, Tyler

Amazing place to grab some fresh cooked chicken. They also serve various other items such as gorditas, quesadillas, flautas, tacos and many more food options. Chickens come in orders of half chicken and a full chicken with beans and rice and tortillas. Everyone speaks English and Spanish and is very courteous and attentive to whatever you may need. Definitely coming back for some more.

Taqueria Valparaiso – Menu with Prices – 413 Maze Blvd, Modesto

Homemade yellow corn tortillas. Gorditas. Exceptional al pastor, complete w the zesty red salsa. Dirt cheap. The chicken tacos are excellent, but my favorite are the al pastor. They’re the best al pastor I’ve had in Modesto. The gorditas are also impressive. Not only do they offer them, which is an item that is not common, but they do them well. There’s tripe too, though I personally don’t do tripe. But my S.O. does, & he loved it. This is a traditional taqueria, but w above par food. The only thing is that the location is a bit rough. It’s right on Maze Blvd/Highway 132. Ladies, be sure to bring your man here w you, like I do. And that’s during the daytime. Sketchy area aside, the food is the real deal. Fresh, clean, uber authentic. Mom & pop, family run establishment. Nice people. 4 stars.

Gorditas Dona Tota – Menu with Prices – 123 Old Port Isabel Rd #1-2, Brownsville

This place is pretty delicious. They have many different flavors to choose from and the restaurant itself has a modern feel to it. I usually get the combo de la casa I believe it’s called, which comes with 1 gordita with beans and cheese and 2 gorditas of your choice. It also comes with a drink and a side, but I have found that their sides are not too great. They only offer rice and fideo as their sides and they’re both very underwhelming, especially the rice which is kept in a Tupperware container that looks like someone’s lunch. The workers here sometimes seem as if they hate their job often dragging their feet and aggressively handling equipment and food as if they are annoyed that they have to make it for you. All in all this place is delicious because of the gorditas, but their sides suck and there is a chance you’ll get bad service

Paulita’s Restaurant No 1 – Menu with Prices – 2720 N Arkansas Ave, Laredo

I was next door getting an oil change in my car at Checkers and decided to grab a quick bite to eat. Very authentic mom and pop shop. I was here around noon on a Saturday and they were fairly busy. Very nice people and they had this nice jazz music in, very soothing and actually a upscale feel, if you close your eyes. I was torn between ordering the tacos, which I spray it was the worlds largest tacos made with homemade tortillas or caldo de rez, The beef soup. I ended up ordering the beef soup and it was amazing. It’s like going to your Mexican grandma’s house and having her make something from scratch. It was loaded with lots of beef, cabbage, zucchini, celery, and tomatoes. I tasted really fresh and they served it with a side of rice which I decided not to do because I’m watching my carbs and subbed out the flour tortillas for corn tortillas instead. It was a very big portion compared to some of the other places I’ve gone to for beef soup, which tend to skip on the meats and vegetables. And all for just under $8 and I have left overs! Yay! I’m coming here again next time to try their tacos!

Taqueria La Cabana – Menu with Prices – 4014 Indian River Rd, Chesapeake

I’ve been hearing my neighbor rave about this place since shortly after they opened. Apparently he has a regular night when he dines here WEEKLY. So – one day when I was feeling mucho lazy I used a competing dining delivery app. It’s within a 5 minute drive but I simply didn’t feel like putting a bra on to go inside to pick up a takeout order. ? It was THE fastest delivery order I’ve ever had and believe me – it was worth every cent. My order consisted of the chicken chimichangas entree (fried) that comes w rice and guacamole salad. I also ordered a side of refried beans and the cheese dip. Included at no additional cost were fresh fried tortilla chips w both red salsa and white sauce. (Don’t judge! I got a good 2.5 meals out of this) Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious. I believe they make their own tortillas – both corn and flour – because they didn’t taste like typical Mexican restaurant fare. Both rice and beans were yum. Even the lettuce/guacamole/tomato salad on the side w sour cream seemed unusually fresh. Tortilla chips were still hot. Salsa is super tasty – lots of flavor but not too hot. The white sauce had a bit extra tang with a tad more heat. Loved them both! I enjoyed my leftovers a day and a half later. Obviously fried tortillas don’t reheat as well and the shredded chicken got a bit dried out in the microwave, but I just added the salsa and was able to fully enjoy that second meal. My husband was upset I ate there without him so I suspect we’ll go and dine in soon. More on that later!

Laredo Taco Company – Menu with Prices – 1209 Fortress Blvd, Murfreesboro

Was I pleasantly surprised or what… This place was actually pretty good for the price. We got the tacos de bistec and they were nice and flavorful. The steak was seasoned well and the onions that came with it gave it a slight sweetness. Only complaint was that the corn tortillas were a little undercooked so they were a little soggy. It also came with Mexican rice and beans. The beans weren’t anything special but the rice was sooo good. The taste of cumin and tomatoes really work well together for it. If only the rice wasn’t a little mushy, it would’ve been perfection. Still, the flavoring is top notch.

Taqueria La Familia – Menu with Prices – 2642 W 32nd Ave, Denver

This is the best dine in Mexican establishment I have eaten at in North Denver, period. (Admittedly there are some taco trucks on Federal with better tacos but I consider these different genres.) If you dine in, they serve you chips with housemade salsa and warm red chile. I highly recommend the warm red chile! I ordered the combination platter with a chile relleno, chicken enchilada, and steak street taco. It was served with a side of rice and beans and your choice of tortillas. I ordered it with corn tortillas, which were amazingly fresh and excellent to scoop bites of chile relleno. The street taco was top notch and the enchilada had great flavor. My husband ordered chicken gorditas and these were great as well. We were able to dine al fresco on the small sidewalk patio and it was a wonderful experience! I already can’t wait to return. Extensive vegetarian options on the menu as well, for those looking. Also pro tip: finish your meal with a $1 churro from the Rosales Panaderia two doors down.

Don Chava Cocina Mexicana – Menu with Prices – 708 N 10th St, McAllen

This little place is a Food truck that’s been in that corner for awhile. Everyone At my work goes there for lunch. They do have to benches with umbrellas outside, or you can take it to go. You can even eat in your car lol. The two ladies that run it make everything fresh and it shows. They do make small portions in order to accommodate fresh and ready to go food. Their specialty is Gorditas and Tacos, but man do they make good Lunch plates. Its definetly like grandma used to make. You won’t be disappointed. They have nice combos at a very affordable price. 3 gorditas rice and a drink for 6 dollars. Can’t beat that. Ask for limes and both hof sauces! Enjoy!
