Wow! I’m freaking out how wonderful this place is. My first visit was just a short stop for an iced coffee to go. (the iced coffee was good, not “crazy-slap-your-momma-great”, but I came back because I was drooling over their pastries in the display case…. So, today, I walked in to such a wonderfully inviting bistro. (Yes the signage on the outside looks a little janky, but it is obviously temporary and that they just opened up.) It is obvious the owners are family with some designers! From the lighting, cool white tree branching chairs, wooden stools with bicycle pedals to the sliding barn door for the walkway going to the restrooms, this place has a crazy cool vibe. But, let me speak to what I just experienced. I was planning on buying a single croissant and a iced latte, but one of the chefs comes out from the back and says, “You can try a croissant and even try the brisket croissant, but I’d like to suggest the steak and cheese croissant”. That was enough for me. I went with it and asked for a herbal mint iced tea with some simple syrup, since I was now going with the savory side of the bistro. Let’s say up front the croissant was the best I’ve ever eaten. The pastry was perfectly buttery and flaky. The cheese was oozing out the sides and caramelized. The person who made this knows what they are doing like a master CIA agent reading lips to steal the codes to the missiles and saving the world! I ate the caramelized cheese from each side first. The cheese was so soft while the caramelized brown crunchy aspect brought out the salty and sweet of the cheese. Then the butter of the pastry hit my taste buds like a lightening bolt hit a power station that forced an entire city to go without electricity to contemplate and realize how thankful they should be for simple things. This pastry was simply perfect. The creamy aspect of the cheese was perfect and coated my tongue like a warm blanket on a chilly winter evening. Now, I’m gonna say as a big guy this is not just filled with tons of meat…. but let me tell you about the steak. It was the perfect mix of salty, umami, and just a hint of black peppercorn. It’s not a thick TX steak, it is the kind of steak you’d want to savor each bite and allow the juice from the steak to play on the playground of your tongue. This thing was so good (and I’m not kidding) I bought a second one and ate it all over again for the experience. It was that good. So, I still need to try some of the sweet pastries, but I’m a customer for life and I NEED this place to survive financially so I can continue to enjoy a little slice of heaven. I went in for a bite to eat and left experiencing an encounter with a heavenly inspired steak and cheese croissant. Wow.

Grandy’s Restaurant Irving – Menu with Prices – 2815 N Belt Line Rd, Irving

I went to Grandy’s and had chicken fried steak. It was excellent. I wanted to thank Grandy. They told me Grandy does not work there. They even told me they don’t know Grandy and never met Grandy. Something is up with that. Go into this place and ask for G randy. They will tell you Grandy has never been there. It drives them Crazy. It’s like going to Jack in the box and asking for Jack. I did that once and a black guy came to the counter and did not look like Jack. But I met Jack and he is a black guy. Cool dude. He gave me some French fries of tater tots. It may have been curley-q’s. No it was French fries. I remember now they were so hot that they burnt my tongue. I walked around for 15 days with an imprint of a French frie on my tongue. I guess that’s what a real French kiss is like. Lol

Georgia French Bakery & Cafe – Menu with Prices – 3512 Satellite Blvd, Duluth

If I could give 10 stars, I would. It’s this little, unassuming hole in the wall bakery, and it will blow your mind. It has a cozy and authentic atmosphere. The owner is a French pastry chef, and he is super friendly. The prices are very reasonable, and all the pastries are out of this world!!! The lemon pound cake is dense and moist, and it is literally the best pound cake I’ve ever eaten. Living in the South, that’s saying something. The fruit tart is wonderful as well. The crust was crisp, the filling was very well balanced in proportion to the fruit and crust, and the fruit felt very fresh, because it wasn’t over glazed. The best for last: the bacon, egg, and cheese croissant. I took one bite, and just sat there. I think it took me 15 minutes to finish half of it, because I felt obligated to savor every bite. It was the perfect breakfast croissant. The croissant itself was light, crisp, and flaky. The eggs were made to perfection, and the bacon was delightfully crisp. My only negative is that the coffee could use an upgrade. As a barista, I’m admittedly picky about coffee, but the cafe au lait seemed amateur and the brewed coffee didn’t seem to be a great quality either. If you get a chance, go here!!! If you don’t have time to go, make time!

Chartreuse Bistro – Menu with Prices – 205 E City Hall Ave, Norfolk

Ahh Chartreuse Bistro… if you’ve never gone here, you’re missing out… although to be fair, if you have, it’s easy to do. This place is a no frills all about food and service place. Heck, they don’t even have a sign above their restaurant. You could easily pass it 100x’s and never know it. BUT, don’t miss out on it! If your’e looking for a great date night dinner/celebration place, go here! First thing’s first… GIVE YOURSELF AMPLE TIME TO EAT HERE. This is not your typical come-in and roll out kind of place. You’re expected to come here, decompress, relax, and enjoy your time. If you don’t, you’re really losing the whole reason of what this place is. Next, if you’re looking for massive portions that leave you comatose after you’re eating, this is again, not the point of this place. You’re not left hungry that’s for sure, but seriously, take a moment to enjoy the food you’re eating. Now – this was the best experience we’ve had in a very long time with food and service. From the moment we entered, Seth was extremely friendly and hospitable to us. We were welcomed in and given our congrats for our anniversary and all the joys and whistles that come with that celebration. I cannot thank him enough for making our evening special. We needed the time to ourselves and he gave the perfect balance between Q&A, service, and time for us. The menu changes daily so to comment on the menu would be pointless. However, for my wife she said she had the best scallops she had ever had.. in her life.. like.. ever… That’s a rather lofty statement considering the places we’ve been in the past. For myself, I had the steak. I’ll be honest, when I first saw it, I wasn’t amazed. Heck, even after the first bite of the steak and the sauce I was like: “Yeah.. this is good.. but idk if the cost was worth it”… however, I decided to eat all the pieces on my plate in a single bite.. so the sauce, the steak and some of the ratatouille all mixed in one bite… um.. omg mouth explosion of yay… So go figure I’m apparently beyond my midlife and still learning how to eat. The food paired so perfectly all together. It wasn’t veggies are there and steak is over here. The food was all meant to pair as one (crazy concept eh?). Anyway, much to not embarrassing myself, the food was seriously, seriously good. You just can’t go wrong out here. We’ll be back.. oh yes.. we will. Thank you again Chartreuse Bistro for such an amazing night! Food Taste: 5 Overall Service: 5 Value of food to cost: 4.5 Facility: 5 (see review) Repeat customer: yes Dog Friendly: no

White Lotus Farms Menu with Prices 7217 W Liberty Rd, Ann Arbor

These croissants are worth the hype. While I haven’t been to the farm itself yet, I’ve visited their stand at the Ann Arbor farmer’s market on Wednesdays and Fridays and also purchased their products at Argus Farm Stop (Tuesdays), and the baked goods I’ve tried were all delicious. The croissants are very good, by far the best I’ve had in Ann Arbor (yes they are better than Zingerman’s). I especially recommend the plain croissant ($3) and the seasonal croissant ($4), which changes monthly. The chocolate croissant ($3.50) didn’t have as nice of a texture as the plain croissant I tried, but it was still the best chocolate croissant I’ve had in the area. The almond croissant ($3.50) is also good but not great – the filling is more moist and sweet, but the croissant portion is a bit dry and the texture isn’t my favorite. For reference my personal ranking of almond croissants is: 1. Crust, 2. White Lotus, 3. Pastry Peddler, 4. Roasting Plant, Golden Wheat (eg at Comet Coffee), and 5. Avalon. The morning bun ($4) is made with croissant dough and is good if you have a very very sweet tooth; for me personally it was too sugary. The bread is also really good. I really love the cranberry walnut but all the ones I’ve tried have been great. At the farmers market they offer samples of bread and cheese (which they’re super friendly and generous with!), so you can try some before committing to an entire loaf. If you don’t mind day olds, Argus Farm Stop sells their leftover bread for half off the next day (Wednesdays). Keep in mind that the bread will become stale after a day or two though.

Little Ground – Menu with Prices – 1450 Flower St, Glendale

TL:DR – Cool seating area, good coffee, ok pastries. —————- Little Ground cafe is about a 15 minute walk from my work, so every now and then, at around 300pm, I’ll go to get some coffee. Maybe it’s because I’m tired, maybe it’s the intense Glendale sun, but that first sip of my iced americano is just what I need. I typically like my coffee, whether that be brewed or as an espresso to be more on the bitter side; I like the more earthy tastes of the beans, rather than a clean acidic taste. That being said, Little Ground has the best balance of both. It leaves me with a boost of energy and a nice taste in my mouth. If I’m feeling extra run down that day, I’ll also pick up a pastry. Since it’s in the afternoon, they are half off and a little bit on the old side, but I really can’t fault them for that. They have a typical spread of coffee cakes, scones, muffins, and cookies, and they are all still tasty. I prefer the orange ginger scone, because it’s not too sweet and pairs perfectly with coffee. The seating area off to the side is pretty cool. A long U shaped concrete bench encases the area, with wooden beams and netting over the top. You would think that the area would get hot during the day, but the concrete stays surprisingly cool. If you have time, it’s nice just to sit down and relax on the cool concrete and forget about everything. hahaha

Tango Pastry Menu with Prices 6100 Richmond Hwy, Alexandria

Tango Pastry is a small, unassuming Argentinean bakery, attached to the Days Inn off of Richmond Highway. They have a pretty extensive menu, being a small bakery/cafe – facturas, various pastries, alfajores, cakes, breads, a brunch menu, and what they’re famously known, empanadas. We ordered a small box of various cookies/pastries – mini tarts filled with quince, alfajores, a little chocolate cookie bomb, and a glazed sweet croissant; all were the perfect amount of sweetness (which was not too sweet); the shortbread-like parts of the cookies were tasty, and all were fluffy and not dried out. Emapandas fillings include chicken, corn and cheese, ham and cheese, beef, tuna, spinach, and onion and cheese. We chose all, except for the tuna. The empanada shell is made with puff pastry, and all come generously filled. The hubs enjoyed the ham and cheese the most, while I really enjoyed the spinach one (tasted like spanakopita!). Ms. Sandra, who helped us, was very welcoming and very sweet! She explained all of the pastries/desserts in the case. Definitely a good number of people dining in as well as picking up pre-orders. Definitely a hidden gem off of Route 1 – I’ll definitely be back for their empandas! -empanadas -ask for Ms. Sandra! +attached to Days Inn +plenty of parking in lot

Bravo Bistro – Menu with Prices – 2560 Matheson Blvd E #121, Mississauga

Bravo Bistro’s tucked away in one of the office complexes off of Matheson and mainly caters to the office clientele. They serve kinda a polish/italian fusion so expect pasta, fried veal/chicken and perogies. It’s kinda interesting because Bravo Bistro serves things to you in a cafeteria sort of manner. I chose the veal parmesan with potatoes and perigees (the let you pick 2 sides). The veal was meh… it wasn’t anything crazy, just a piece of veal with tomato sauce on it. It was kinda tough as well. The perogies were pretty good. They boil them first and then fry them up for you in cottage cheese or cheddar cheese varieties. They have sour cream on the side if you’d like as well as an assortment of condiments. All in all you can get a lot better for the same price as the area is littered with places to eat.

London Calling Pasty Company – Menu with Prices – 836 N Glenstone Ave, Springfield

Soooooo let me tell you about this hidden gem! I was on a business trip and my colleague and I stopped by here because it had so many good reviews. We met the owner and another really nice guy who worked there. It’s a cool English double decker food truck that offers AMAZING food. We had a banana pie and we literally ate the whole pie lol it was so rich in flavor but very balanced and delicious. I had the steak and cheese pastry and my colleague had an Indian pastry. Everything was spot on and so delicious. I know these men will prosper if they come to Kansas City or another big city!!

Cafe Poland – Menu with Prices – 807 Locust St, Columbia

Cute little spot! There was music playing outside. You walk a couple steps and right in the door. It is a quaint little shop with limited seating, but very clean. The sweet lady that took my order was very kind and attentive. The menu is written on chalk boards as you walk in along with pricing. I ordered the potato and cheese pierogis and an iced tea. The tea was sweetened but I’m not sure what with. It had a different taste than I was used to but good. The pierogis came out pretty quickly they were warm with caramelized onions and a dollop of sour cream on the side. They were different than I expected I couldn’t see the melted cheese, but they were really good. As others have mentioned it was served on a paper plate with plastic silverware. The shop was very clean and organized. There were chocolate bars and varied German/polish beers to choose from. There was a tv playing a black and white movie playing. Perfect atmosphere to read my book while enjoying the food. I would recommend.

The Cheesesteak grill – Menu with Prices – 1771 S Oceanside Blvd, Oceanside

My first time here but without a doubt I’ll be back. It’s so hard to find a place that serves an authentic cheese steak sandwich out here in Cali but this place is the REAL deal! It’s located conveniently off the I-5 freeway so if you just want to grab some sandwiches and go. We pulled up and it’s a small shop located in a strip mall. Just the appearance of this place from the outside made me think this was going to be good. Inside they have a menu posted on the walls and it’s pretty simple. There is plenty of seating and a big screen TV they play sports on. I went for the cheese steak sandwich with hot peppers and a side of “Frings” (french fries & onion rings). They use ribeye steak and only grill up the meat when you order your sandwich. When my meal was ready, just looking at the sandwich I knew I had found a great place. My first bite into the sandwich let me know I was right. I can’t remember the last time I had such a delicious cheese steak sandwich and never this good here in Cali. The meat was tender and the most flavorful! Just the right amount of cheese and the sandwich bread was soft and fresh! I love a sandwich like this where there’s nothing I want to add it’s so delicious. The onion rings and french fries were also good. While I would say the onion rings were good, the fries were the best! Next time I’ll just get the fries. My friend had the garlic fries and I can only assume they were good because she ate them all up and I never got a chance to try them. If you are a fan of cheese steak sandwiches, this place is a MUST! I don’t think you’ll find a better cheese steak! I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

Broadmoor Bistro @ The Center for Academic Achievement – Menu with Prices – 8200 W 71st St, Overland Park

This is a review strictly on the bistro morning service. I just want to plaster the city with advertisements on this place. What a huge plus for our school district and community. The building and the eating space is gorgeous and inviting. You do have to be let in the building and check in with the guard but after all it is a school. In the mornings they have a variety of sweets and pastries, I don’t get the impression they have a regular menu for breakfast. In fact we asked about lunch items and the sweet girl working said it varies and to just call if we want to know ahead of time. My husband got lucky and they had a chicken salad sandwich left from the previous days lunch I imagine. He is not a pastry fan. The bread was fresh baked and the chicken salad was simple with a light base and just celery and onion. Sandwich was solid, not soggy in the least. My daughter chose a peanut butter cookie and oh my, it was moist peanut buttery goodness. It was thick and chewy. I had a homemade everything bagel. It was chewy and probably the second best bagel I have ever had in KC. My only complaint is it is reheated in a microwave and it made an already chewy bagel and little chewier. I would recommend a toaster oven for reheating items. They have an espresso machine so you can order your speciality drink or just get a drip coffee. Drip coffee is piping hot and pretty good. Husband ordered the iced coffee thinking it would be coffee on ice but it was with milk. Didn’t matter, it was so good he bought another one. The espresso is again probably one of the best I have had. We had a wonderful morning just sitting and watching as students arrived and prepped for lunch. What greater way to engage kids than to get them started on their career passion now. I encourage anyone reading this to support this program by going in the mornings to grab a bite, stopping on the afternoons they offer baked goods for sale and their weekly dinners. These kids are talented. They also have a huge shelf full of a variety of jams and pickles that are made in house from their garden. Huge jars of pickles are $5, yes $5! I bought two. And the cherry on top… iced coffee, drip coffee, cookie, bagel with cream cheese , a chicken salad sandwich and a jar of sweet pickles for a total of $15! Seriously! Side note, I bought the second jar when I realized what a steal and decided it is my job to help support this program.

Red Bay Coffee Public Roastery – Menu with Prices – 3098 E 10th St, Oakland

Came here with a girlfriend a few days ago. I hang out in Fruitvale on occasion but had never been here. It is unassuming as it’s between some warehouse spaces but it’s a great, large space as a result. It took some time to find parking, I ended up circling around the neighborhood before finding a spot right out front in their parking lot (they do have a parking lot which you’ll see is marked, it’s just small). The coffee shop itself is large and airy, good spaces to work and good places to kick it. There is a very cool living Africa succulent wall that was giving me lifeeee. They sell mercy too and the back appears to be office space you can rent. Overall the place must be popular, because it was the middle of the day on a Thursday and parking was hard and they only had two pastries left. My friend got the blondie, literally a pastry I had never heard of but apparently exists (I couldn’t stop laughing at a pastry named Blondie but I digress. I am weird). Also, when I got there the dude working was boiling eggs! I basically lost my shit because with all these places selling pre-peeled boiled eggs in plastic bags, why not just boil them and sell them in their shells? So much more sustainable! I was weirdly so excited about this, I took a picture. Again, I guess I digress. I ordered a vanilla iced latte and asked for it to be low on the sweet side, and my friend ordered a coffee and the blondie (hehe). The iced latte was kind of disappointing. I saw the guy fill the 12oz cup with ice and asked him if he could go easy on the ice. He said yes as he proceeded to put syrup on the ice…so uh, not sure if he went easy on the ice. When I got the drink, I basically couldn’t taste the vanilla or any sweetness, so I put a whole bunch of simple syrup on it (homemade is what the label said). Don’t get me wrong, it tasted like the coffee is good and high quality, I just didn’t order just a coffee. So a little bummed about this. Overall though, a cool vibe, a cool place, and I like supporting African-American owned businesses and local (I’m a Bay Area native and I was born in Oakland so it has always had a special place in my heart). Will be back to try it again.
