First of all, yelp does some weird math when a restaurant shows as 5-stars with 35 reviews, and 4 of the reviews have less than 5 stars. But as Barbie once said, “Math is hard!” But on to business. Rosedale Kitchen and Bar. Let’s see if this is the restaurant for you, shall we? If you like a good location in north central Austin for a nice meal out, then this is the place for you. If you like your food salty, this is the place for you. If you like your roasted brussels sprouts perfectly roasted–cooked through but not mushy–then this is the place for you. If you like your fillet cooked perfectly, if a bit blandly seasoned and expensive, than this is the place for you. If you like your pork chop just a hair overcooked, but also just short of too dry, then this is the place for you. If you like your food to have more salt than genuine flavor, then this may be the place for you. If you like your mashed potatoes perfectly delicious, then this is the place for you. If you like your chimichurri on the side where it should be rather than on your steak when it arrives in front of you where it shouldn’t be, then this is the place for you. If you like a restaurant with nice clean lines, pleasant decor, and an open kitchen, then this is the place for you. If you like your food so salty that every third or fourth line of your yelp review is about how salty your food was, then this is the place for you. If you like paying a bit more for extra salt, then this is the place for you. If you have sodium-sensitive high blood pressure, than this may not be the place for you. Did I mention that everything I ate there, from appetizer on, was entirely too salty? I’d comment on the flavor of the food, but I honestly could not really tell you too much. I’m not being facetious (well, a little, but really though). The price was a bit steep for the experience over all, but that’s restaurants for ya, am I right? Many will like it. It’s a new place and people love new places. They love to gush over new places. I calls em like i tastes em, though. I don’t regret going here, but I’m confident I won’t come back.

Lucky Dumpling – Menu with Prices – 26 S Wahsatch Ave, Colorado Springs

We really wanted to love this place. We wanted to support Brother Luck as we’ve followed him since well before Top Chef. We love the music. We love the art. Tupac was abundant. Gold stars for that, for sure. One restaurant pet peeve: if you’re working in an open kitchen with no walls or windows, and that kitchen is basically connected to the front door, don’t pretend you don’t see me standing there waiting to be seated. Don’t act like I’m not there and ignore me. Look up for two seconds and say, “Have a seat anywhere” or, “We’ll be right right you.” You aren’t working too intensely for a little hospitality. Also, the food misses the mark in a big way. The Bahn Mi lacked the freshness and crunch of cilantro. The jalapeños were sliced so thinly and applied so meagerly you couldn’t taste them. The pickled veg were also skimpy. You can get a perfect Bahn Mi an hour away for $4. This was an anorexic $12 sandwich. We tried dumplings. The hot and sour dumplings with pineapple relish were great. The dumpling love stopped there, though. As for the green curry dumplings..I think they’re supposed to have shrimp but lacked any sea flavor. The curry sauce had zero punch and was far too mild. The braised beef dumplings were in a consommé that was too salty to eat. And I’m not salt sensitive. We determined the meat inside the dumpling was salt-heavy, too. I’m talking salt burns on your tongue..that type of salty. Kyle tried to make things right. They tried to remake the dumplings again, though we insisted they didn’t have to. They watered down the broth. They kept mentioning how “intense” those dumplings were. I don’t have an issue with intense flavors, but salt isn’t supposed to be a flavor. It felt like they wanted to find a way to not have to comp the dumplings. Kyle said he would comp them if we still didn’t want them after tasting the fresh batch. Frankly, he should have comped either way. On our way out, we took one last, sad look at Biggie and Tupac on the wall and said our final goodbyes since we won’t be seeing them again.

Sweet Tomatoes – Menu with Prices – 4928 S Power Rd, Gilbert

I generally love eating here. Their soups are usually pretty good but I don’t know what’s happened lately. Their French Onion soup from last month was nothing but salt. This month the Spicy Sriracha Udon soup is nothing but salt. Extremely salty. No other flavor in the broth could be tasted. This is the worst version of any Udon soup I’ve ever had compared to a Japanese restaurant. Sorry for all the bad news. For the good news, I love the fresh salads and homemade salad dressing. So yummy! Usually pretty good but on certain days they add a little too much salt to the Home Greek Dressing. Soups here are generally awesome in the past!! I would have given them 5-stars on many occasions. I don’t know what’s happened as of late. I hope they get their naturals flavors back.

Stats Sports Grill At Wrigley West – Menu with Prices – 860 N Riverview, Mesa

I read previous reviews so didn’t expect much, even then it was a frustrating disappointment. The decor was that of an upscale sports bar with plenty of TVs for watching games. The service was friendly but slow, particularly the kitchen. The oft-followed resturant formula of plenty-o-salt and animal fats here is taken to extremes, at least with the salt. The au-jouix for the French Dip was so salty it burned my tongue a bit. And the kids didn’t eat their fries. I’ve never seen that. The 2 thin slices of meat were more than adequate for me, but I think most people would prefer a bit more for their money. The lack of meat seemed to be compensated with extra Provolone. Animal fat: check! The veggie burger nearly had the color of a burger, but with a strange texture and artificial smokey flavor that gave the impression that the chemicals within weren’t safe to eat. I’d say just admit you’re not up for vegetables and order a real burger instead. My wife said her shrimp and rice dish was fine. And while the broccoli and carrots where over-steamed they tasted OK, which is.how I rounded up to 2 stars.

Koji Ramen Bar – Menu with Prices – 25403 I-45 ste a, Spring

My daughter decided that she was in the mood for ramen, so we stopped by here as we were in the area. The setting is very nice and comfortable. You can choose a individual table or a large community table. Our waiter was very nice. He described the dishes we asked about and offered suggestions as to the more popular dishes. My daughter got the spicy ramen and I asked for the kimchi ramen. She loved hers. It was a clear soy broth, with a nice flavor. The kimchi ramen is a miso base with kimchi and pork. Both looked beautiful in the bowl. I will say for me that if you have looked at any of my reviews, I tend to be a low salt type person. This to me was very salty. I love miso, but when I make it at home, I can control the levels better. I love the idea of the ramen, but I really did not enjoy it for me due to the saltiness. I will try to make a healthier version at home. Probably not as pretty, authentic or in that type of setting, but something I can control the salt flavor on. As for my daughter, hopefully they do takeout as she loved it.

El Ranchito Taqueria – Menu with Prices – 3639 Portland Rd NE, Salem

This is the BEST little taco place EVER. I LOVE their guacamole salsa, it is the perfect amount of spicy for me. I go to other places and theirs have no spice at all. They have all kinds of condiments you can put on a taco, just writing about it makes my mouth water. They have made a better enclosed area, where before you had to check the weather to make sure you were dressed the part to eat here. I was caught in a rainstorm here one with lots of wind! You have to at least try the tacos once. I love the asada tacos. They are perfectly seasoned. You can easily spend $25-$30 for 2 people here. So worth it for me at least. And there aren’t many places I would be willing to pay $2/taco. They are honest too. I have never been over charged here. Other places like this they add on another taco or 2 and make you pay though they only give you what you asked for originally. I do the math before I get charged everywhere I go because of this. You MUST try this place at least once in your life ?

El Pilon Criollo – Menu with Prices – 973 N Clinton Ave, Rochester

I shouldn’t give this place 5 stars because the pork was so salty but, giving them the benefit of the doubt – mistakes do happen. Getting past the salt, the flavors were all excellent and I have tried about everything here. I do love the people here! The staff are very friendly and I really like supporting local small business in our neighborhoods. Anyway, I recommend this. I would say something about the salt but my last name is Steinmetz and I’m pretty damned white so I’m not so certain the staff would appreciate my critique of their food.

Taverna Rustic Italian Wilmington – Menu with Prices – 3549 Silverside Rd, Wilmington

I was thinking about this place since it’s just opened but didn’t try it until today as the reviews are not favorable. Yes, three stars on Yelp is not a good thing to a restaurant, especially a new one. But today I took the girls to see the pediatrics in Quillen building, which is in the same plaza, and the girls want to have pasta for dinner. So we are here, and I’m glad I finally made it, regardless of three stars. First, I like the decor. Simple, trendy and comfy. I like the open kitchen in particular. Then the waitress is very attentive and friendly, and considerate. Instead of ordering from the kids menu, I ordered a Rigatoni & Sausage for the girls to share, and it comes in two plates. The waitress also asked me if I want to have my pasta when it’s ready or wait until the appetizer is finished. I ordered an Antipasto with prosciutto, broccoli rabe, and eggplant caponata. Before I get chance, the prosciutto is gone! The eggplant caponata is on the sweet side, but taste good with flat bread. The broccoli rabe is not sautéed, just steamed. I should have noticed it on the menu as I like the sautéed version. But I dipped it in the tomato sauce dipping oil for the bread and it tastes great! The girls love the rigatoni, and my spinach ricotta agnolotti is terrific and I ate it all. No dinner is concluded without an dessert. The Tiramisu is so delicious that I finished in one minute (my younger one is already sleeping on the bench and I need to get out of there ASAP). During the dinner, I kept thinking why it only has three stars on yelp. I don’t remember what the reviews say, maybe I should go back to check. But I like it personally, and on this Wednesday evening, it’s pretty busy in there. I can’t drink alcohol today, but the wine menu looks pretty decent. I already plan to bring friends over on Saturday and know exactly what I’m going to order.

The Brine Well – Menu with Prices – 128 E Jefferson St, Syracuse

This should be a 2 or 3 star review based on my one visit, but I love the concept and want this place to do well. I’ll keep it as a 4 for now and revisit the rating if my next couple visits are like my first one. What to like: 1) Nice engaged people working the counter 2) The meat sauce is EXCELLENT. Has a slight nutmeg/cinnamon type flavor to it. I wish they were more generous with it. I also wish they were more generous with onions. 3) I had eggs on mine and they were cooked to order and cooked fantastically. And there were two eggs as one of my proteins. That’s great value. 4) Baked beans had decent flavor (maybe a touch undercooked) 5) Refills on drinks What they need to improve: 1) I was with a table of seasoned upstate NYers and we all thought the salt potatoes were WAY too salty. Almost as if they used all the salt that comes in one of those kits. Need to dial back. Home fries were salty too. (And I love salt). 2) Service time is gonna be the death of them if they don’t get that figured out. A garbage plate at anytime shouldn’t take more than 5-10 minutes. At lunch time it’s crucial it’s closer to 5. Everyone was waiting 15-20. 3) My friend ordered a half plate and I ordered a full plate. The only difference in service size was I had one more protein than him. For another $7, the full plate sides should be observably bigger than the half plate. Maybe they made a mistake? All in all, I’m glad this place is here. And I hope I have reasons in the future to keep this review at a 4 and maybe even bump it to a 5.

Louisiana Famous Fried Chicken – Menu with Prices – 9026 Archibald Avenue (7th & Archibald, Rancho Cucamonga

I purchased two half-chicken dinners here yesterday. They were cooked to my order and I had to wait a bit for my order. This was OK by me because the chicken was still very hot when I got it home (I live a 15 minute or so frome this location). Fancy that, HOT commercial fried chicken that had not been sitting in a hot case for who-knows how long drying out, whoo-HOO! Service was good and friendly. The pieces were quite large; they must be using the grocery store chickens, you know, the 5-6 pounders Vons and such sell (hard to find a true 3-4 lb fryer because they are all sold to the chains). Nice chicken flavor, not super salty like a LOT the stuff at other chains and grocery stores. The chicken breasts were cut in half because they were of the type that weights 12 oz plus, gigantor size, which is just fine by me. I had chicken breast that was VERY juicy, properly cooked! Everything else was nicely cooked too. The meat had a nice texture. It was not brined I am sure. Brining tends to make fried chicken more soft in texture. The texture and flavor of this was chicken and not of chickeny-salt. The collards were seasoned with some bacon and were tasty but way too salty. Beans and rice, well, the beans were not seasoned other than salt; nothing to write home about. The rolls were a standard white dinner roll and ok. This was decent, basic fried chicken and I would consider purchasing from here again because the chicken was not too salty, DID taste like chicken and was freshly cooked for me. The sides were meh. Recommended for a fresh, cooked, tasty and HOT (though not seasoned other than salt and pepper) fried chicken. Note: The chicken in fried in the same oil that the fish is fried in. This is not objectionable to me when the chicken is hot. When the chicken is cold, the fish flavor it quite evident. Remember to buy it then eat it HOT.

Little China Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 3161 Broadway Blvd. STE #R-141, Garland

I really wish I could give this more stars because you can tell everything was fresh, it was delivered hot, on time and should be GREAT! However, half of it was WAY to salty…The absolute best item was the Crab Rangoon, some of the best I’ve ever had. We had Chicken eggrolls which were average. We had the Egg Drop soup which wasn’t the best egg drop soup we’ve had, it was average. When my wife says something is too salty, it is definitely too salty because she will add salt if necessary and the remaining items were definitely too salty. Then we had Sweet & Sour Pork, Orange Beef and Sesame chicken which ALL were WAY too salty. The orange beef didn’t taste or look like orange beef, it looked like orange chicken… We had this delivered and without delivery fees it would be about $43, which is a little high for Chinese food and way too high for salty Chinese food. We are still looking for great delivered Chinese food! Chinese food is usually great delivered, it is like Christmas waiting for the delivery guy to arrive, but not this time. Sorry… It was so salty I’m not willing to take another chance on this place.

eat. Casual Scratch Kitchen – Menu with Prices – 145 E Sunset Rd B 300, El Paso

We are foodies and always want to try new places. Based on the Yelp reviews, I wanted to give this place a try. Came here on Sunday and found this cute little brunch place. My family was seated right away but the service after, was a joke. We weren’t acknowledge. We got here before it got busy and yet the two tables that got here AFTER us, got their drinks first. After a good 10 minutes, I got up to the register and asked for service. Our food took a while. The tables that got here AFTER got theirs first. One of our orders was the double chocolate pancakes based on how thick and fluffy other customers had gotten theirs. When ours arrived, they were just really thin pancakes…not at all what others got. We kept getting coffee grounds in our coffee. We had to ask for utensils. The kitchen staff looked very frantic and just all over the place. Other customers got their wrong food. A table had to get their own to-go boxes. After I told our server that everyone else that got here AFTER us was getting service first, she didn’t even apologize and just went straight to placing our order. Not the kitchen staff or the servers smiled at all and just looked like they didn’t even want to be working there. It wasn’t a friendly place at all. The prices here compared to everywhere else in El Paso, are pretty pricey. They range between $10-$15 which being from D.C, that’s what prices are about on the East Coast. So for El Paso, it’s on the more expensive side and you can find better breakfast places for half of their price. If we’re paying those kind of prices, I was at least expecting better food, better service and a friendly atmosphere which we didn’t get or others got. Such a shame because after Sunset 150, Salt & Honey and Crave, we were hoping to love this one too since it’s so close to us.

Bansho Ramen Menu with Prices 2502 Telegraph Ave, Berkeley

***3.5 Stars*** Most certainly not the best ramen that I’ve ever had, but a solid option considering the area. I pass through this area often and was excited to see a new ramen spot in this part of town. The setup is actually really nice! It’s neat and organized with very elegant lighting and decor, and there’s a beautiful bouquet that’s set near a bright red sofa near the entrance. The staff is extremely welcoming and tended to me as soon as I walked through the door. The service is A+ plus! They were super attentive and spot on the entire time that I was there, even as the tables began to fill up. I came during their grand opening week and they were offering a $7 Tonkastu ramen special. I love a good deal, so you know I had to jump on that real quick! I complimented my ramen with their edamame appetizer. The edamame was nice and warm and not overly salty for my taste, but they did use quite a bit of salt to season. Portion size was fair for the price. The ramen however, was a bit too salty for my taste. The broth had a good flavor but nothing out of the ordinary. Not sure what kind of noodles they were using, but the consistency was unusual. Not the noodles that you’d normally find in ramen. These noodles were thicker and also too firm like they hadn’t been cooked enough. I found the pork belly to be too firm as well and not that melt in your mouth consistency that you’d expect. This ramen was just a special and obviously their most basic, so I’m not sure if their other ramen bowls are of higher quality. Taste wise, it was good but pretty average. For the price I paid, the portion was great. However, I wouldn’t drop $13-$15 on this. Again, I’m just referring to their bare bones tonkatsu ramen. Their other ramen bowls could potentially be better, so I’ll have to come back to try something else. Pretty solid but there are better options out there. However, it will still satisfy your craving if you’re in need. The service is really the standout here, and that will be the main reason why I’ll be giving them another try.
