I LOVE Hawaii and LOVE Hawaiian food. We spend every summer in the islands, so I’d consider myself a Hawaiian food snob. I know my Hawaiian food. When I saw this place and read the yelp reviews, I figured we should try it. I was craving a good loco moco. Unfortunately I was hugely disappointed. I will say, the the ladies working behind the counter that evening were the epitome of Hawaiian hospitality. They were welcoming, friendly and patient with our group as we pondered the menu and made our selections. Their service was quick, friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the food was quite disappointing. Those other Yelpers claiming this is authentic Hawaiian food that taste likes your in the islands obvious don’t know what they’re talking about. Loco Moco: the portion size was good. Unfortunately the hamburger patty lacked flavor, was over cooked and tasted burnt. The gravy (which makes or breaks a good loco moco) was just okay and there definitely was not enough of it smothering my rice and eggs and tasteless burger. Chicken Katsu: Decent portion size, but it tasted like fish. They must’ve fried it in the same oil they fry their fish in and/ or the oil must’ve been old. Chicken teriyaki–the chicken was dry and over cooked. The teriyaki sauce, nothing special, tasted like it was out of a store bought jar. The Mac salad-bleh. And what Hawaiian restaurant doesn’t serve spam musubi!?!?!? No spam, can’t really be Hawaiian. If you’re looking for authentic, yummy Hawaiian food and local plates in Bend, you should look elsewhere, as you will be disappointed. (Though you’ll be disappointed in a friendly Hawaiian atmosphere.)

Ono Hawaiian BBQ – Menu with Prices – 15560 N Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd, Scottsdale

Years ago, this location started out strong with many things on the menu identical to Hawaii plate lunches and other island comfort foods such as Saimin. I discovered that it is a Mainland franchise that had a goal to bring Hawaiian local food to the Mainland. It very much reminded me of a really clean Zippy’s (found in HI only) or an L&L. Went back last week and was disappointed to find that the menu has become pretty narrowly focused on chicken plate variations that will appeal to the masses (grilled with teriyaki, breaded and fried like katsu, grilled with some other sauce that is spicy, grilled with some other sauce that is sweeter, etc.) Gone is the Saimin, Hawaiian poi plate, loco moco, etc. They did have Kalua Pork but no Lau Lau or poi to go with it. They also had SPAM musubi which was serviceable but pricey ($4.25 for 2 small ones) and hastily put together. Paying that much for a slice of SPAM topping a rice rectangle wrapped in nori kind of made me die a little inside. The ingredients cost probably all of 75 cents and the labor looked like it took about 6 seconds to assemble. I was disappointed. The place is clean. The service was quick. The food I tasted wasn’t bad but the Aloha spirit is missing (service is more lunch lady strict than Island laid back), the menu selection is very focused on Mainland tastes (I supposed they are limited by supply and demand and they can really only make what they can sell to the local area palates), and there is really a lack of what I would consider classic Hawaiian drive inn style plate lunch selections. (No chili, no Saimin, no Lau Lau, no Lomi Lomi salmon, no beef stew, no sweet and sour, etc., etc.) Lastly, I think the portions could be a bit larger, especially for the steam rice and Mac salad. Both looked like they were scooped with a gelato sample scooper than a regular scoop. I know that seems petty in this day and age of obese Americans and I certainly don’t need a bigger portion but if anyone has every had an authentic plate lunch in HI, you know what I’m talking about. Ever seen a skinny Hawaiian? You know exactly what I’m talking about! The name “Ono Hawaiian” for the business would seem to be a slight misnomer since it wasn’t exceptionally ono (Hawaiian for good to eat or delicious) nor was it very Hawaiian. If they renamed it “Chicken Focused for Mainland Tastes” it would be much more accurate and perhaps I would then have a much different impression of it when I walked in the door. A simple name change would probably shoot my review up to 3+ stars for managing my expectations.

L & L Hawaiian Grill – Menu with Prices – 23119 Colonial Pkwy Ste. B10, Katy

A little taste of Hawaii on the mainland. I was stationed in Pearl Harbor in the 90’s and I have an affinity for all things Hawaiian. We went for dinner and ordered a Moco Loco and a Pulled pork. Traditionally these both come with 2 scoops of rice and 1 scoop Mac salad. The moco loco was okay, hamburger patties a tad over done, and the egg yolks not quite as runny as I remember them on the islands. The Mac salad was also warm, either it’s not refrigerated or the box warmed it up really fast (I’m thinking it’s not kept in a fridge, bad idea considering it contains mayo), I also remember the Mac salad having more of a bite. Might be the Mayo they use, even here in the mainland I use blue plate. The Kahlua pork was good, still moist and as always more than a normal person can handle. They offer it with or without cabbage, your call. It didn’t have quite the same banana smell/taste you get from ti leaves (traditional) or using bananas (an okay substitute). The shop is decorated with plenty of art and items to give you that Aloha feeling. All in all we’re likely to return only because I tend to make my pork and Mac salad in very large batches that leave a ton of leftovers, and this is a great way to get a quick fix without the 8 hour cook of the pork at home. I always love to share that Aloha flavor, and this isn’t a bad way to get a quick fix.

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue – Menu with Prices – 1900 Fulton Ave, Sacramento

Mahalo to the owners for opening up an L&L in the Arden-Arcade area! The food is so good and the portions are generous for the price. Nothing fancy, but just an authentic Hawaiian “plate lunch,” made up of grilled meats or panko fried shrimp and chicken, mac salad (heavy on the mayo, of course), and lots of white rice (although, I sub steamed veggies). This recent visit, I got the “seafood combo” with bbq chicken. Loved the fried shrimp that were plump, hot, not oily, and crispy. Chicken was flavorful and tender. The one piece of fried fish was very thin. I would not order again. The steamed carrots and broccoli were fresh and plentiful. The mac salad is my one guilty carb pleasure! It’s oh-so-sinful, if you like that Hawaiian-style of macaroni salad (PRO TIP: They do offer a “low carb” plate of just grilled meats and eggs, no rice and no mac salad.) Boyfriend had the loco moco, and finished it all with no complaints. Staff was friendly and efficient, as our food came up in a timely manner. The place is pretty small, with maybe 6 or so tables, one of which was being used to store boxes of containers. There is a cute little outside patio in the parking lot. Restroom access is from outside too. When we left, I noticed another Hawaiian restaurant in the strip mall right around the corner. Brave of them to open within walking distance of a known chain with similar food! I’m willing to try them, but my loyalty will always be with L&L!

Ohana Hawaiian BBQ – Menu with Prices – 2402 W Walnut St, Garland

Ohana Hawaiian is decent food, but I’m just personally not a fan. I would probably spend my money elsewhere in the future. – Spam Musubi: An order of this comes with 2 musubis. My issue with this is that the spam was ehh (didn’t have much flavor beyond the original saltiness), sitting on top of a BED of rice (like we’re talking more than half a cup of rice lol), and then wrapped in seaweed. I love spam musubis, but this was just A-OK. + Hawaiian Fried Rice: I’d give this a 3.5 or 4*. If you like pineapple, you may like this. It has diced pineapples, diced spam, egg, and it’s tossed with rice. The rice was fairly bland, so make sure you’re picking up a piece of spam to get some flavor! / Short Rib Plate: Okay, so I saw that EVERYONE was raving about this plate. I love galbi/short ribs, so I was down. Ordered this, but the meat is cut pretty thin. Flavor was yum, though. I don’t care for macaroni salad, so I can’t speak to that much. The veggies were OK (not much flavor). It comes with white rice, or you can swap for fried rice only. Would I get this again? Prob not, lol. Overall, I just wasn’t impressed. ? But the service was nice! ?

Da Kine Island Grill – Menu with Prices – 23 N Market St, San Jose

Great atmosphere! Heard about this place through a friend from the Bay Area. She had invited me to an event she was participating in as part of a singing group and would be performing with the band. I couldn’t make it then because of UYSB in Reno. That was on May 19 this year so I bookmarked the place hoping to make it here one day. Well, we made it there tonight. It was around 7:45p when we arrived… the place was crowded, almost jam-packed, and I wasn’t sure if we were going to get a table inside. We were led in the back area at a high table, you know the kind where you just have drinks or apps. We wanted a full dinner but there was no room anywhere else so we took what was available. We proceeded to order… The menu looked interesting with a wide selection of island favorites. We placed an order of Spam Musubi (2 pcs), Da Kine Fried Rice, Coconut Shrimp and hubby had the Kalua Loco Moco. Our meals started to arrive in quick time. Surprisingly, our small round table was able to fit all the food we ordered. Our server wasn’t too observant about our water glasses needing refills. Had to ask. The Spam Musubi was Ono! They didn’t skimp on that sweet sauce. Yum! Daughter and hubby seemed to have enjoyed their meals. I was disappointed with the fried rice, though. It was plentiful but tasteless. It needed something… salt? soy sauce? We didn’t have any of these condiments on our table… actually, as small as these items were there was literally no space on our table. The atmosphere was lively, the scene was adorned with all Hawaiian theme. Hubby even thought that it was overkill… not sure if there’s such a thing as too Hawaiian?. Anyway, it was a bar scene, there was no live band performing that evening since all the flat screens were showing the UFC 227 fight on PPV. There was even a flat screen facing Market Street… I guess this is for the patio seating but there were no table seating set up outside. Hmm… the restaurant validated our parking garage ticket and the $5 parking fee was free. This restaurant is located in downtown San Jose. Review #1096

L & L Hawaiian Barbecue – Menu with Prices – 9050 Fairway Dr, Roseville

When I come to a Hawaiian Barbeque restaurant, two things are guaranteed: I’m going to order the Bbq chicken meal and get two spam musubis. There’s a bunch of items you can order here from burgers, soup and different meat combos (pork, chicken and beef) so you’ll find something you like. I came here on Tuesday around 1230pm and luckily it wasn’t too busy. A bunch of people had already ordered and were just waiting for their food so we got to the front right away. I got the mini bbq chicken meal, the regular is a lot of food especially since I’m ordering another item on the side. The mini meal comes with bbq chicken, scoop of rice and scoop of macaroni salad. There’s shredded lettuce underneath the bbq chicken as well. I also ordered the spam musubi which is spam and rice with seaweed holding them together. There is sauce on the side including sriracha and teriyaki. When the food came out, I went straight to the musubi and devoured it. Dipped it in both sauces and finished it. I’m a huge fan of musubi so you won’t see me sharing unfortunately. The bbq chicken was next on my list which tasted juicy and not dry at all. It was the perfect combo with rice and the macaroni. I finished it and felt good after eating all that food. I would’ve had a huge food coma if I got the regular instead. You’re really eating Hawaiian food when you’re coming here. It was a great experience overall and I appreciate the Ohana vibes here. Thank you Hawaiian BBQ!

Aloha Wagon – Menu with Prices – 1247 S Western Ave, Chicago

Tucked in the corner and from the decor doesn’t look a whole lot, but the food packs a lot of flavor! Some street parking outside and Very limited bar seating seats inside, but the chef prepares the food fast. Come hungry too because the portions are generous! We got the loco moco and the mixed meat platter with the pork and Katsu. Our favorite was the Katsu – super crispy on the outside and juicy/tender inside. The loco moco comes with 2 or 3 hamburger patties and my pro tip here is to mix the gravy with the Katsu sauce for extra flavor! All meals are served with the macaroni salad (really tasty!), white rice, and a side salad. Would recommend giving this place a try!

Buried in a strip mall is a classy “Hole in the Wall”–This recently turned 2 year old Hawaiian style comfort food restaurant ain’t no dump–it looks a bit out of place on the outside, however has a classic spirit of Aloha on the insides-(friendly wait staff) -no surf boards on the walls just a smooth clean, laid back, business like ambiance–you get two for the, price of one– lunch and dinner up front with the huge billards/banquet room on the side added 1,year ago — Try the T’s Chinatown Spicy Garlic (hope you like garlic they do) Spareribs –app @$12.50 with a,bit of,rice could be the dinner, so just order the full dinner, size with the, rice, and Mac,salad inc,@$14.50 (Hawaiian Plate Lunch). –and for a bit extra, you can add fried, rice–yummy– tip: make them spicey– “finger licking good” Or just order, all rice with the Imperial Classic fried rice Mix,up with hamburger, peppers, onion and,egg @$10 .66,or the Kitchen Sink Mix,Up with all of,the above plus,bacon/Ham/hot,links @$11.95– Of course they got “Loco Moco”-( this,is a,Hawaiian style restaurant)- for those of you who don’t know –that’s hamburger patty w/caramalized onions /2 eggs/ smothered in gravy all over rice @$12.95,for $3 more, add fried rice awesome– This is a classy, comfortable place but not too fancy, with lots of parking you can definitely “Hang Loose” Plus you get to pick em– root beer float or real draft beer –they.even got a speak easy bar, with real booze, in the back of the joint– just knock twice and tell them Al send you– Cheers

Noble House Hawaiian Foods – Menu with Prices – 3238 E Douglas Ave, Wichita

Delicious Hawaiian plate lunches at very reasonable prices. Truly a Wichita gem! This restaurant is located in the booming Uptown area and walking distance to a bunch of cute shops and dessert places. My favorite items to order from here are the huli huli chicken plate lunch and the beef loco moco plate lunch, as well as the ahi tuna poke. The huli huli chicken is always perfectly grilled, maintaining the right amount of juiciness without being too dry. For those who have never tried it, I would describe it as baring a lot of similarities to teriyaki chicken, without being too sweet and full of glaze. The macaroni salad that comes with the plate lunch is pretty average and does not offer anything to make it unique, however, it is still well executed and delicious. If you choose to go for the poke, be aware that it is served the traditional Hawaiian style– delectable cubes of beautiful, fresh fish tossed with white and green onions in their special house sauce and served over rice. Don’t expect the extra toppings such as seaweed, avocados, cucumbers, edamame, or whatever else you would hope to find at the average poke joint. If you have yet to try poke the traditional way, this is not a bad place to start as the fish is always fresh and you can truly appreciate it without the distraction from the other added toppings. Besides the delicious food, my other favorite things about this restaurant are the extremely reasonable prices (plate lunches are also offered in a mini size for those with a smaller appetite or are looking for a snack) and the speedy service. I look forward to coming here every time that I am in town!

Mifflinâ??s House Menu with Prices 2467 Jefferson Rd, Athens

Fresh lively authentic Peruvian food in a spot that has held several different restaurants over the years. They have brightened it up with warm colors and lights and comfortable booths and tables. The menu has about 6 pages of foods including an entire page of cervichs. We had a big plate of seafood fried rice and the seafood trio which has the fried rice, the classic fish cervich and some chunks of fried fish and fried yucca. The rice dish had a bit too much salt, but had plenty of well cooked and tasty shrimp some rubbery calamari and some fish and onions with soy and tomato sauces flavoring the rice. The cervich was a generous portion of fresh fish plus onions and hamony corn and very sour with lime juice. There’s are 3 other options. The fried fish was tasty and the yucca was a nice foil for the sourness of the cervich. Service was quick, friendly and pleasant. The owner came to our table to visit which was nice. Portions we’re very large and the prices reasonable for what you get. The varied menu has many choices. This place is worth a visit for authentic Peruvian food.

El Nuevo Amanecer Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 534 Pleasant St, Worcester

Finally got to stop in for lunch. I asked what the daily special was and given a ton of options from grilled/fried chicken ,steak, fish and chips, rice& beans, fried plantains and more. I opted for the fish & chips for my daughter and the fried chicken for myself. When the food arrived it tasted as good as it looked. I sampled the battered fish and it was perfectly seasoned . I than tried my chicken and it was crunchy and flavorful . The rice was perfectly cooked and beans delicious. After this great meal I decided to bring home a slice of tres leches cake. The cake was also moist and not to sweet at all. I will be coming back to try all the other things on the menu.

Chikos Grocery And Deli – Menu with Prices – 400 Pacific Ave, Jersey City

This is a hidden little gem of a place with great home cooked styled food. This place is an authentic Spanish food restaurant that serves cook to order food and not buffet styled like most other spots. I typically get the grilled chicken with 2 sides. The grilled chicken is always deliciously seasoned and all the sides I’ve tried up to date are on point. They have yellow or white rice, salad, mixed steamed veggies, red or black beans, tostones , platanos (sweet fried bananas), and so on. Everything has been good and has not disappointed yet. They also serve other delicious foods like bbq ribs, fried or grilled pork chops, peppered steak, ny steak, fish fillet, and one of my favs roasted pork (pernil). Service is also good, staff very friendly and caring. Food takes a little longer then usual to come out but well worth the wait. (Update: food preparation speed has definitely improved big time, this is hands down my favorite Spanish spot in JC) I’d recommend this place to anybody who is craving authentic home quality Spanish food.
