When I was a little girl and from time to time accumulated the vast disposable income of twenty five cents, my parents would let my younger brother and me walk a couple of blocks away (in our Portland city neighborhood) to a little market that had an amazing display of candy. This market smelled like candy when we walked in and there seemed to be an unending number of candy choices for me as I disposed of the quarter. In those days, you could walk out with at least five choices, more if you knew the “puts and takes” of penny candies and candy bars, in a crunchy little paper bag for the quarter spent. The hard thing was narrowing down the options to stay in budget. (I didn’t know I was learning something about consumer choice and money management in this exercise, but I was. ? ) The first time I walked into Powell’s the memory of being that little girl in that other store, clutching my quarter and holding my brother’s hand was so overwhelming it was almost visceral. You know the phrase “sell the sizzle not the steak”? Well, what Powell’s is really selling at each of their (roughly 18 franchised) stores is the “sizzle” of memories – and it works. First, Powell’s smells like a candy store from my childhood. I’m not kidding about that and I’m not sure how they do it, but it is in part the aroma that fuels the memories. All of the shapes and colors of packages and bulk candies in happy candy cacophony add to the aura. The first time a friend and I visited Powell’s, we wandered in the (too tight) little aisleways…”Oh remember these turkish taffies? Remember these chick-a-sticks? Remember this kind of gum? Remember…” Powell’s also has good looking gelato for sale, but in my couple of visits into the store I’ve never made it past the candy to try the gelato. I seem to go in on a candy buying “search” for something to send a friend. But I’m not really buying the candy to send them, I’m buying the memory the candy will bring back when they see the package, smell the aroma and eat the contents. Even though some of the candy I would have chosen to eat as a kid almost makes my teeth chatter now to think of the over-sweetness of it, some happy new memory occurs to me too. Times change. I imagine few parents today would let a couple of sub seven year olds walk to the city market a couple of blocks away by themselves. A quarter wouldn’t buy one candy bar, let alone a crunchy paper bag filled with sweet options. My candy loving brother grew up to be a dentist. But he is gone now – a car accident when he was only 44. As I write this review, I remember when he was four years old and always wanted to buy a box of a specific brand of cherry cough drops. Which I, in year older sister mode, would not let him do since they were “medicine”. But I wonder if Powell’s carries that old brand of cherry candy passing for cough drops? If they do, on my next trip in I’m going to buy a box and remember my brother. I’m very glad times change and progress is made. As example, back in the days when that quarter would buy me a bag of candy at that little market, it would have been unthinkable for a woman to be a Justice of the Supreme Court. Nostalgia, someone once said, is the longing for things that never really were. So for me it’s not so much that Powell’s fuels nostalgia, something I’m not inclined towards, but that it blooms good memories and smiles. If you visit Powells, you’ll probably find memories of your own that will make you smile too. Not to mention a LOT of candy to buy of all kinds to help create new memories. Now if they’d just make the aisles wider, it would be five star worthy. ?

Main Street Market & Deli – Menu with Prices – 881 Main St, Riverside

I recently moved to the area and was super hungry so put in grocery market in my search engine. This place wasn’t too far from my home but unfortunately it is nor a market Nor deli. It is a liquor store that has a taqueria inside. Everything look dingy and dirty I did walk out with an ice cream bar and a bag of ice. I walked in expecting to purchase a few grocery items that I could perhaps cook for lunch or dinner. Super disappointed overall if you’re looking for a liquor store I don’t know if they sell alcohol but they do have a variety of sodas and candy and junk food as well as tobacco products. The cashier who am I assume is the owner of the store was very friendly and was surprise when he heard that they are advertised as a market and deli online. So basically if you need something quick and easy they will have it for you or if your hungry and want to try their tacos go for it. I was in the mood to cook my own food I didn’t want to purchase any…

sugar kingdom – Menu with Prices – 3000 Atlantic Ave, Virginia Beach

Was hanging out with my nephew (13 yrs old) down at the beach when we saw this candy store. I felt like the 13 year old when I walked in because it was a very bright, colorful and sweet smelling! It was as if I entered the willy wonka chocolate factory. I wanted to touch and taste everything! It’s very clean and organized by the type of candy and colors. You can create your own bag of candy selection by choosing from their vast selection and weighing it all when your done. They have toys and trinket candy dispensers, T-shirt’s and tierras. It’s a toy store and candy store rolled up in one. The drawback, it’s very expensive. Parking is on the side metered street or garage. It’s a nice splurge for the sweet tooth and kid in you!

Alex Ice Cream – Menu with Prices – 2800 Sharon St, Dallas

Paper Source – Menu with Prices – 2061 Chestnut St, San Francisco

Wow, after reading about the same experience I had when I returned a $32 candle with RECEIPT at the Chestnut Street Paper Source I have to speak out. Paper Source, one bad social media post is going to spread bad will like wild fire. Ever hear the saying, “You get more bees with honey than vinegar?” I received dirty looks because I was returning an item that was purchased from the San Jose location Paper Source to the San Francisco Chestnut store. I was questioned, “Did I just wander into the location?” which I finally figured out they were mad at me for buying it in San Jose and returning it in San Francisco. It so happens I work down the street and it was convenient to go to their location. My daughter bought it in San Jose and has finals this week at the University so I offered to return it for her. I can’t believe they would even question me. I’ve got news for you, when you buy a Paper Source franchise, it comes with the territory that people will return stuff to your store from all over the Bay Area, just as the other Paper Source stores will get returns at their store from the Chestnut location. You signed up for it and know better. I have never been so HARASSED by salespeople and a manager Iike this, and it took almost 15 minutes to get them to type in all the information to get the return. I have never seen such mean spirited BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. Customers are treated to this passive aggressive behavior. The service STINKS.

Russell Stover Chocolates – Menu with Prices – 1300 Village West Pkwy, Kansas City

Part outlet store, all retail store, this is one of a handful of Russell Stover candy stores in the city. The bulk of the store has most, if not all, of Russell Stover and Whitman’s line of chocolates and candies (regular and sugar free), including Jelly Bellies. They have individually packaged candy as well as bulk. They always have “seasonally wrapped” boxed candy and candy assortments on hand (for guys … Lol) for when you need a last-second gift for Mother’s Day or an anniversary. A complete ice cream selection sits alongside an amazing collection of freshly-made fudge and hand dipped caramel apples. My personal favorite are the bloopers in the back. Bloopers are boxes and bags of whatever got messed up at the factory and can’t pass the eye test for selling at retail. Otherwise, it’s the same candy only cheaper. The store doesn’t get a say in what the factory sends them, but it is always my first stop. I highly recommend this location in the Legends. The staff is always friendly and helpful.

P K Deli & Market – Menu with Prices – 716 E 64th St, Tacoma

I want to tell the whole world, DO NOT EVER GO & SUPPORT THIS STORE! My boys and their friend experienced racism in this establishment. They went there to buy candy and the owner told them that they needed to hurry and get out. He said he can’t stand young “black people” at his store. The boys ended up still buying something from his store when they left to prove they had money. I went there to confront him and he said by “experience” he had to protect his store. I asked if he ever saw these boys take anything in the past and he admitted No, but their kind has. I refuse to give any business to them. He was yelling in my face and had his hands up and said the boys were lieing, but he caught himself saying the same things the boys admitted. No one should ever be treated this way. IF YOU BELIEVE THAT THERE IS STILL RACISM AROUND, DO NOT SHOP HERE!!!!

Macon Road Barbeque – Menu with Prices – 2703 Avalon Rd, Columbus

I grew up in Columbus back in the 60’s and 70’s and there was a Macon Rd. BBQ across Macon Rd, where the Winn Dixie is. As a kid, I would cash in coke bottles for 2 cents each and save up my money. Once I had 62 cents, I would walk down the road from Barbara Rd. and buy me a pork sandwich, Nehi orange soda and that cost me 62 cents. I know that is not the same place, but it is still “Macon Road BBQ” which brings back fond memories from my childhood. I can only hope that the current business is as good as what I remember from childhood. I am just thrilled to see there is still a BBQ place there for me to recollect my memories of.

S G IceCream- Wholesale Ice Cream Distributors, San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles County – Menu with Prices – 1312 Brooks St, Ontario

Duzer’s Local Café and Market – Menu with Prices – 387 Van Duzer St, Staten Island

I don’t know how I found this gem. It’s a little coffee house with a couple tables, fresh made croissants, macaroons and local goods market. Parking isn’t ideal as well as the neighborhood that’s why I took away a star. It was early enough that I wasn’t to concerned about parking a few blocks away but on colder days as if it’s dark out I wouldn’t roam around to head here. I’m not a big coffee drinker but they also have loose leaf tea. My big reason to try this out was to try the croissants (one of my very favorite foods). It was later in the day so they didn’t appear to fresh but wow delicious. I chose a chocolate and almond paste croissant. The owner offered to warm it but I was taking it to go so she packed it in foil and told me to warm it for 10 minutes I’m a toaster oven. She was right. The chocolate and almond paste came out warm and melty, it was heave. I had to stop myself from eating both halves in one sitting. I also picked up a candy bar with potato chips from the local goods part of the store. I also couldn’t resist getting a small sample of my weekness candy mix from the candy bar in the back. Overall I would love to come here with a friend for tea, croissants and conversation, I see that in my near future. Ooo and she also makes croissant sandwiches I think I spotted a few with goat cheese, it’s like this lady read my mind when creating her menu.

The Spice & Tea Exchange® of Katy – Menu with Prices – 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd E130, Katy

I had the best experience here today! It was my first time in and I stopped to buy some teas as Christmas gifts. I wasn’t really sure what I was looking for but Jocelyn; the owner helped me right away by giving excellent recommendations and samples. She answered all of my questions and gave me the run down of ingredients, etc. They had so many great options that I ended up buying six teas, some sea salts, sugars and some other miscellaneous items. I ended up buying some stuff for myself that I can’t wait to try! During this whole shopping experience I had my two year old with me that wanted to touch everything! Jocelyn was so patient and kind with him. She gave him items to play with and let him have a rock candy that he wouldn’t stop asking for. It also started to rain really really heavy while we were in the store so we stayed for awhile to let it pass and she entertained my son so sweetly and gave him glow sticks. She was his best friend quick! I had a great time there today during my extended shopping trip and came away with lots of great gifts! Great store and great owners!

Del’s Freez – Menu with Prices – 402 N Harbor City Blvd, Melbourne

The sign says ‘THE ICE CREAM MAN SWEETEST MAN IN TOWN’. Believe it! Since 1956! I had a freaking fantastic weekend visiting my hometown. Went to a childhood friend’s surprise 85th birthday party for her mom! Saw old friends and met some new ones there! Everywhere I went good karma seemed to follow me. Sooooooo, on my last night in town I decided to hit the old sweet spot, Del’s! I almost ran out of time however, as it was 10:45 pm when I rolled into the parking lot. They close at 11! Geez! WHAT am I doing yearning for a Del’s this late at night? THAT is the power of memories. Memories of parking my motorcycle as an 18 year old, jumping off and buying my date something COOL! Memories of sitting in my sweet ride Pontiac, listening to some Melbourne-born Jim Morrison & The Doors on my Quadrophonic Pioneer 8-track stereo with Mind Blower speakers, snuggling with a cone and a cutie! And here I am, quite a bit later in life, at Del’s without my Fab One! She wasn’t able to accompany me for this weekend trip down Memory Lane. The window slid open and Miss Lisa cheerfully greeted me. I proudly ordered a medium chocolate cone, please! I watched intently as that creamy chocolate concoction coiled higher and higher on the cone. I chatted briefly with Lisa about growing up in Melbourne, rekindling fond recollections. She was cool, I was cool but my cone was tilting in the summertime swelter….leaning like the Tower of Pisa! She politely asked to show me how to correct the curve. I thanked her and took a seat. Sitting there solo, by the river, visions of past and present brought me to a wonderful place. Nothing mattered and nothing had seemed to change, strangely enough. I was that 18 year old again, for a brief instant in time. Ready for a Moonlight Drive to Light My Fire as I Love Her Madly! Tell them John sent ya!

Rodak’s Coffee And BBQ Grills – Menu with Prices – 2520 W Pafford St, Fort Worth

I had the best buying experience ever with Marvin. He took the time to open the store on a holiday so that I could look at the different Primo models and make sure I was getting the best grill for me. His knowledge is encyclopedic – he knows the best way to cook just about anything on the grill. He made sure that I had everything I needed to be successful with my new grill – I had to stop myself from buying more than I really needed as a beginner. He’s a heck of a nice guy to talk to as well, and I learned a lot in the 90 minutes I spent in the store.
