Milagrito is all of the following: Mexican grocery, bakery, deli counter, and restaurant. The restaurant we did not try but is right beside the grocery store. The deli is all the way in the back and looked quite small. The bakery items are in the back as as well in a case. They did not offer a huge selection of bakery items but I think there were enough selections for a grocery place that is on the small side. Upon entering on a Saturday at 4pm, I could smell the bakery items and it smelled so divine I had to try one. It seems they were restocking the bakery shelves with fresh goodies because a guy came from the back with a huge tray of baked goods. I had what looked like a rectangular cake with two layers with a thin layer of jelly between the layers. It had pink sugar on top. It was slightly warm so that’s a good sign. It was soft and not too sweet but sweet enough. Since it was such a huge slice, I had some left over the next day and it was still soft. Also bought some limes (6 for $1) and some spicy mango lollipop candy. Spent around $3.

Bert’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 4419 S Westnedge Ave, Kalamazoo

I’ve always thought of Bert’s Bakery as the nearest local competitor to the Boonzaaijer Bakery. I suppose this belief dates back to a time when my mother favored the butter cream frosting of the Boonzaaijer Bakery, while my father liked the people who worked at Bert’s Bakery. I, personally, like the cakes and pastries from the Boonzaaijer Bakery. As I have said before, Boonzaaijer cakes will be featured at my funeral. But today was not about me, and the person of honor had been hinting about trying a cake from Bert’s Bakery. She chose a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting with a raspberry jelly between the two layers. Likes: 1. The cake was a denser cake than what Boonzaaijer’s makes. When it comes to chocolate cake, the denser, the better. 2. Much prettier flowers made with frosting adorned the cake. Dislikes: 1. The two layers were not of equal size. The top layer of cake was twice the height of the lower layer. 2. I still like the frosting Boonzaaijer’s uses more than Bert’s Bakery’s. 3. The bakery misspelled the person of honor’s name though I handwritten it out in big block letters for them beforehand. (And yes, I did check before I walked out with the cake, but decided the fix – the bakery couldn’t have just make a simple letter substitution, because then the spacing in the name would have been obviously wrong – would have been too much trouble. And, anyway, I knew the guest of honor would care least of all of us.)

Takes the Cake – Menu with Prices – 1194 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena

4.5 stars So…I finally ordered a cake from this 35 years in business, Pasadena, CA bakery…I’ve been looking for an excuse for over 6 months to partake of a cake from this bakery again. Takes the Cake specializes in custom cakes only. They do not have a bakery case for grab and go items. I ordered for a birthday/anniversary get together and it was the perfect excuse to order a 1/4 sheet cake to feed 20-25 people. They kindly let me sample some fillings with white cake, but I did not know they had lemon cake and would have loved to try that as I love lemon. I ordered the white cake with strawberry mousse on half and raspberry mousse and lemon curd on the other half. $60 for a 1/4 sheet. The cake was beautiful, they do a great job of making buttercream look like fondant. Everyone who tasted the cake seemed to like it, some said it was the best cake they have ever tried. I really liked the cake but to be honest it was not AS enjoyable as the first time I tried it but still a very good cake, especially when you want something nicer than a standard grocery store cake. The slice from the round cake I initially tried at a party several months ago seemed more pleasant to eat than a square slice from the 1/4 sheet. The layers of the edge slices on the 1/4 sheet cake also did not seem to stay together as well. They filled the cake a day before my order which surprised me, I know because I was going to change up the filling to add a thin layer of raspberry filling and when I called in they said the cake was already filled, regardless, it still tasted fresh for the most part. I ordered a separate $5 mini cake with the same filling to share with someone who was not able to make it to the party…she loved it! The mini was enough for 4 small servings, a perfect way to do a pre taste. All in all, not a full 5 star review because I was a little disappointed when I found out they use a flour cake mix for some of their cakes versus making it completely from scratch. I was also disappointed that the edge slices of my sheet cake seemed too delicate and the cake was starting to fall apart, almost on the verge of breaking into large chunks, and the layers did not stay together as well on the outer slices. If I were to order again, I would order a round cake versus a sheet cake, the ratio of frosting to cake was better on the round and more consistently even. With all this said, the cake was still very enjoyable but not absolutely perfect.

Katy’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 5417 Long Beach Blvd, Long Beach

This bakery made a cake for my son’s 6th birthday. It was a last minute save since the Baker I had canceled a week before. The top layer was beyond dry but the bottom layer wasn’t so I swept it under the rug. They did inform me over the phone that they would keep a $25 deposit for not returning a cake stand that held the two layers. The party was on Sunday and on Tuesday I returned the stand. Upon giving it back the lady at the front told me that she would have to deduct $5 for a cleaning fee. I told her that one, I tried cleaning it as best I could but couldn’t get out what was stuck inside the stilt part (it had cake) since they push it into the bottom layer. Second you make your customers drive back to rerun it for their deposit and I was NEVER informed of a “cleaning fee”. I would give them zero stars if I could.

Joy Of Sweets Menu with Prices 2120 Washington Cir #262, Arlington

Sugar Bee was super easy to work with. We had a bridal cake and a groom’s cake for our wedding. My cake had a gluten free layer on top (because I have allergies) and it was delicious! We paid the same cost for that layer as all of the others, which is very uncommon. Usually there is a huge upcharge for gluten free cake. I’m told that the other flavors were amazing too. The cakes themselves were exactly what we had envisioned, and we couldn’t have been happier with them. I would definitely recommend them for any bride, especially one with food allergies. We can’t wait to get our free cake for our first anniversary!

Gordon Food Service Store – Menu with Prices – 1003 Michigan St NE, Grand Rapids

I came here for a Yelp event, but ended up staying and shopping afterward: to be clear this review is just for my after event shopping. I had no idea what to expect when we came in, but it definitely was not “Small corner grocery story.” I was blown away about how nice the interior was, and the variety of things they had on hand. We live not far from this location so it’s great having another grocery store option. I’d put GFS as somewhere between a normal grocery store and Costco – they have bulk items like Costco has, but they have a larger variety of items than Costco, plus non-bulk like a normal grocery story has. It’s a really neat mix, and I really enjoyed just walking around and taking everything in. They had a really nice meat and deli counter, and a neat little bakery (they don’t make their bakery items in house, but have it shipped in from a small bakery in Chicago – they do decorate their items in house though). Prices are (as expected) good on a variety of items. They are better than our normal grocery store (D&W) on a lot of items, and are competitive or better than Costco on bulk items as well. There are obviously exceptions – candybars would be cheaper at Costco as an exmaple, but they had more variety so….it evens out. Anyway – Highly suggest checking this place out if you’re on the lookout for a better grocery store and live in the area.

New York Bakery Menu with Prices 10720 E Iliff Ave, Aurora

New York Bakery! Once again you SHINE Thru.. This time around with your GREEN TEA CAKE! My Oh My! It was indeed delicious, SUPER MOIST and the Icing Cream indeed MELT in my mouth! In between the two layers of the Green Tea Cake, New York Bakery, put slices of Peaches with the Buttercream Icing. My Oh My, thankfully, the Green Tea Cake is NOT as sweet, just I like it from my kind of Cakes… The Green Tea Cake got ALOT OF THUMBS UP especially from the Birthday Girl herself and all my friends who had it on Saturday evening, November 8th 2014. PHEW! THANK GOD For That! This smallest cake order of Green Tea was $28. I don’t mind returning to you, New York Bakery. Definitely RECOMMENDING you to many more friends I have. See you soon! A BIG THANK YOU to you, New York Bakery! THANK YOU! @208/2014

Roma Bakeries – Menu with Prices – 523 Marchesano Dr, Rockford

On Sept. 12, 2018 I had Roma Bakeries to make a 2 layers Birthday Cake with extra filling. When I got the cake home it was one layer cake cut down the center with little to no filling and a gray hair stuck to the bottom of the cake on a piece of card board (I have photos of this saved). In trying to do the right thing in wanting to properly resolve the matter. One old lady who answered the phone hung up rudely in my face. Then calling back to find the owner which he stated his name was John decided to be an asshole, after I tried to write a letter of complaint and visit the place in person, he continued to make verbal threats of him getting his attorney to harass anyone who comes into his business and have a problem with the cakes that are custom-made. This place really needs to be closed down. The shop is ran by a bunch of old ladies that does not wash their hands and does not have hair nets in handling the bakery items. I have contacted the Illinois Food Inspector to make the public aware of my personal findings. So for all buyers to be aware that cutting a cake down the center does not classify 2 layers, this place is a COMPLETE RIP-OFF and the bakeries items are unsafe to eat. So be aware because I personally have photos to prove it.

Bliss Baked Goods – Menu with Prices – 10710 142 St NW, Edmonton

Super friendly staff, locally owned and they only do small batch baking… if you need larger orders, make sure you call ahead to pre-order so you wont be disappointed (1-2weeks ahead for cakes!). As they are a Jewish bakery, all their yummy baked goods are pork product free and dairy free.. they even have some vegan desserts! Known for their donuts, they are simply made and soooo good! I was particularly impressed with their dairy free Boston creme donut and cinnamon old fashioned cinnamon roll like donut… yummo! They are not a one donut trick bakery.. their knish, a traditional flaky pastry with savory fillings like onion potato, mushroom or spinach are so so yummy. We bought the mini ones as snacks, but ended up eating them as dinner! – adulting done right hahahaha! The potato knish as my favorite as it was surprisingly the most savory out of all 3. We also picked up a nicely executed apple strudel- nice flakey layers with a thick layer of cooked cinnamony apples in the centre. Picked up a small loaf of challah bread as our toddler loves the soft sweet braided bread. Last but not least, we picked up what we originally came in for… a chocolate overload cake! The cake layers had the texture of a rich lucious chocolate brownie, and the light tasting dairy free creme in the centre helped offset the super sugary chocolate ganache the whole cake was enrobed in. Delish, though next time I’ll ask for no ganache or a semi/bittersweet chocolate ganache.. so I’m not sugar overloaded when I want a big slice instead of a little slice of this chocolate overload cake. Overall, definitely adding to my list of fav bakeries!

Boulevard Bakery – Menu with Prices – 2815 Independence Ave, Kansas City

The 4 star review is based on personal preference. The bakery items are high quality however just a bit too sweet for me. The prices are extremely affordable. The front is very unassuming. I’ve seen it many times but it’s always been closed when I’ve been by, and I incorrectly assumed it was shut down. So, the items I tried.. Cinnamon Pecan Bun. My main thought was it was too doughy and I prefer more goo throughout and less of that bread dough flavor. I like the dense gooey sticky buns. It was very soft and had a nice chew. Pecan cookie. It had a more elaborate name but looked amazing. The flake and texture was dreamy but it was really over sweet. It had a confectioner’s sugar taste that really sort of ruined it for me. I was thinking of a pecan shortbread but it was like one mixed with a sugar cookie. Chocolate chip cookie. 100% perfect. Chewy, soft..delicious and amazing! Sugar cookie. Soft and delicious..but…broken record time…icing was too sweet for me. Apple fritter. Not many apple pieces, and a very bread like dough. I prefer the dense and crunchy type of fritters. I feel the sugar was masking the actual flavors of some of the items and that was disappointing. Again, you can tell that these are quality baked goods made by professionals. Just my personal taste is a bit different for these types of items. I would go back. But wouldn’t be in a hurry. I can see and understand why people love it however.

Sweet Bakery Mexico Lindo – Menu with Prices – 212 Broadway, Chula Vista

I work nearby the bakery. Over the years, many employees requested a cake from here for special occasions. This trip I ordered a half sheet strawberry. The cake is a traditional white with whipped cream filling and fresh strawberries. The cake is extremely thick. I counted four layers. There is whipped cream in between each layer with fresh strawberries smack in the middle. Around the outside of the cake is sliced almonds and large whole strawberries with a sweet concoction that embellish the top. The cake was a hit with everyone. It is delicious. The ordering process was easy. Patty took my order. I had questions on what size to get. I was ordering for 50 people. They have a template to show you what the size of the cake is. It makes it stress-free when you can see how much you are getting and can visualize how large each piece will be. The cost for a half sheet is $80.99. Since the cake serves 50-60 people, I think it was very reasonable for the quality that you receive. I ordered the cake four business days before my event. They require a deposit but I chose to pay up front in case I was running late on the day I went to pick up the cake. When I arrived to pick up the cake, it was not decorated. However, it only took them a few minutes to add the strawberries and do the writing. Do to the thickness of the cake, cutting it is quite a challenge. Unfortunately, it does not always look pretty as the layers sometimes separate especially around the border. The taste of the cake makes up for the messiness. We will continue to purchase cakes from Mexico Lindo.

Chef Flemming’s Bake Shop – Menu with Prices – 7 S Water St # B, Henderson

Amazing custom cakes and customer service. We started by stumbling across this local bakery for a morning cinnamon roll and sticky bun (theBest!). We ended up ordering our Baby shower custom cakes and cupcakes that were the beautiful centerpiece of our baby shower. We cake tested with Chef Flemming and decided upon a two layer (lemon cake/lemon curd on top and strawberry shortcake/vanilla cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream for bottom layer),and marble cupcakes with Belgian chocolate. Val the lead cake decorator made the cake look exactly like I wanted on top, a pink fox face and she came up with the birch woodland theme bottom to coincide with our theme. It turned out beyond our expectations for Looks and taste! All of our guests ate a piece of each flavor and the cake went fast. So glad I ordered a bit larger to have a few left over slices. We will definitely use Flemming’s for our custom orders. Shop local!! The other Bigger commercial bakery across town was going to charge me what I paid for all of this for just a small 8″ round single layer cake…..I’m so happy I found Flemming’s before I decided to order with them. The quality and beauty and personal service far exceeded what the other place would have delivered. Thanks Chef Flemming and Val!!! And everyone. You made our baby girl’s shower so special

Bella Cakes By Thena – Menu with Prices – Thistlewood St, Colorado Springs

Thena made the cake for me and my wife’s beautiful wedding at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in June of 2009. I cannot recommend her work highly enough. We wanted a very tall, elegant cake that incorporated fresh florals, and what we got was nearly a work of art. We almost hated to cut it. Not only did they look fantastic, but the flavors were simply amazing. We had different flavors for each layer of a six-layer cake. My favorite was the pink champagne cake. If you are having a wedding, do yourself a favor and don’t settle for anything but the best, and Thena is the best.
