Icing on the Lake has been a great business for years, ever since they started out on 12th Street. Since moving to the new location, they’ve definitely seen an uptick in business which is incredible and has lead to some new flavors and creations. I’ve heard their cookies and cakes are great but this review will focus on cupcakes. If you’ve never had one, you’re missing out. All parts of the cupcakes are tremendous. They are gourmet in every sense of the word and worth the price of admission. Our family has switched to getting cupcakes for birthdays instead of cakes because they are their own masterpiece of flavor. And speaking of flavor, there are a ton to choose from. You could probably sweet talk (see what I did there?) the owner into making a unique flavor just for you. But keep in mind that any custom orders will take time and cost more. I’d say it’s worth it though if you have a special event planned. The cupcakes come in two sizes, basically normal and jumbo. They even have alternative diet cupcake recipes featuring vegan, gluten free or vegan&gluten free. But fair warning: You’ll need to call ahead and they are only available in chocolate or vanilla. Again, you MIGHT be able to get special flavoring if you have an even or something planned but expect a premium. And pay attention to the flavors of the day which are posted on the website. They have some flavors available every day like chocolate peanut butter cup but the daily specials are only available on those days unless you are ready to pay more. But that’s the great thing about this shop: they are happy to work with you and make you happy. Everything is simple and clean. It’s well ran and they have great service. Recommend you order ahead if you can

Guncles Gluten Free – Menu with Prices – 1252 Government St, Mobile

Gotta’ give it up to the Guncles! If you’d have told me a while ago that I’d be chasing down ANYTHING that’s gluten free, I’d have laughed in your face! Thankfully, I don’t have Celiac Disease, or any allergy/sensitivity to gluten. But here I am, a fan and Guncles cheerleader! Their cakes are delish and don’t taste like cardboard! Honestly, I’d imagined in my head how they’d taste. I’ve tried those “substitute the sugar for applesauce desserts” and, yes, I can tell and I LOATHE them. (I digress.) I think I bought the last of their raspberry-lemon and chocolate cakes at a Market at the Pillars event (and almost had to go toe-to-toe with another buyer for it). I enjoyed the lemon raspberry, and took the chocolate cake home for the hubs to try. He’s our resident chocolate lover and approved also. I even withheld the gluten free info for a fair assessment. Their cakes are divine and free of gluten! Now, if you could rid them of the calories, you’d change the world!

Couture Cakes By Nika – Menu with Prices – 10373 Warwick Blvd, Newport News

This is the best bakery to grace the Earth! (I still don’t understand why people would go anywhere else in Newport News) Maple Bacon Cupcakes Ok my review is done. LOL! Ive grown up around amazing bakeries, I even grew up with Amish and Mennonite bake businesses. Living in Va Beach, I am near some fine bakeries but still only go to one…..25 minutes away and across a bridge tunnel and that is this fine shop by Nika. Many places will make cupcakes or cakes and call it something due to the frosting having that flavor. But Nika goes above and beyond making both the frosting and cake go with the intended flavor. Where a run of the mill business will have a Key Lime cupcake with only the frosting adhering to the flavor and the cake being a generic white cake; Nika will have a key lime frosting and cake with lime or graham crumble. Want something unique? Try her Lavender cupcake. Want to die by chocolate, get the Chocolate Overload with some actual chocolate bar on top. Have a cheat day with the amazing Peanut Butter fudge. Or want the recipe Oreo is seeking, have her cookies and cream cake……Hell, have them all there isn’t one you’d go wrong with. The cupcakes are the tip of the iceberg. She is an artist, bakes cakes, cookies and anything else…… Finally, we had her do our wedding. My god the almond cake melted in your mouth. The crowd went gaga over her cake and were more than happy to take some cupcakes home. And after a year of being frozen until our anniversary it was still an amazing bite. If you want to be the toast of your party….just get 2 dozen different cupcakes and you’ll be welcomed back! MAPLE BACON CUPCAKE!!!!!!!!

Sweet Boutique Bakery – Menu with Prices – 9814 Zackery Ave, Charlotte

Earlier this year I changed my diet after finding out I was intolerant to dairy, soy and gluten and it made a huge difference in quality of life. But that doesn’t change my inexplicable love of cake. Cue the need for a custom cake for work and so I went to Yelp first looking for vegan gluten free cake and didn’t have much luck. So I went to the Googly machine and found Sweet Boutique! Debbie saved my life. She bakes beautiful cakes and cupcakes (regular, wedding cakes and my hippy dippy specialty cakes) out of her nice home in South Charlotte so don’t just show up on her porch for an after dinner slice. ? She does beautiful or custom art – I sent her my logo and she cut it out of surprisingly delicious edible fondant but she does sugar art too. We got a double chocolate vegan gluten free cake because my coworker also doesn’t usually get to enjoy sweet treats. It was so dark it was almost black but the taste was incredible. It reminded me of brownie batter and my husband absolutely refused to believe it was either vegan or gluten free because the cake was so mouthwatering good without having the grittiness some GF cakes have. I don’t know what she uses but it’s magic. I will be ordering a GF Caramel cake for my birthday and likely will come back for any baby showers. I bet her regular ones and wedding cakes are phenomenal!

Hands on Sweets – Menu with Prices – 3601 W Kennedy Blvd E, Tampa

We engaged Hands On Sweets to make our wedding cakes, and here’s what you need to know about them: 1- The chefs, Carlos and Marie, are incredibly kind and helpful. Any time we had a question or request, they were responsive and really quick to offer suggestions that clearly came from years of experience both as pastry chefs and participants in the complexities of event planning. 2- The cake is so delicious that I want to use some really strong language to describe it, but I don’t want this review to get censored, so OH MY GOODNESS will have to suffice. We got two wedding cakes, one chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and fresh strawberries, the other lemon cake with lemon curd and raspberry preserves… and our guests were floored. My mother-in-law begged a plastic bag off of the wedding venue to smuggle some out in her purse, that’s how good it was. 3- They’re accommodating! A few of our guests had allergies, so we requested a dozen vegan-gluten-free cupcakes, and Chef Marie went over and beyond, and decorated the cupcakes to look like popcorn boxes. I saw a few non-vegans sampling them too! 4- They really want you to be happy with the end result. That’s what matters most to Marie and Carlos, and it shows in the way they treat their customers and the way they make their cakes. I STRONGLY recommend Hands On Sweets, and would definitely book them again for any event.

Smallcakes Cupcakery And Creamery – Menu with Prices – 2300 Wabash Ave, Springfield

If you’re in need of a sugar rush, look no further! Cupcakes were fresh and huge. I’m not a fan of cupcakes that are loaded with tons of crazy toppings or stuffed with candy or other foods, so I appreciated that these are just simple cupcakes with simple flavors. They offered a pretty wide variety of different flavors and nice selection of staple flavors like birthday cake, wedding cake, vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, etc. I ordered the hostess knock-off cupcake. It was amazing. Personally it is way too sweet and too large to finish in one sitting, but that just means it lasts longer. The restaurant was clean and staff is friendly. They do run out. Our mistake was while we were deciding on which one cupcake to order, we let someone go ahead of us who ordered two dozen and unabashedly wiped the place out. So beware, they usually don’t have more in the back. What’s out is what they have. And I guess the rule of thumb is if you’re in line first, don’t let anyone in front of you as it’s cutthroat here for these tasty little cakes.

Sweet Confections Cakes – Menu with Prices – 4702 Fritchey St, Harrisburg

We ordered a cake for my son’s Eagle Scout ceremony to test their cakes before my Daughters wedding. The cake was decorated exactly as we wanted but the taste was a bit bland for a chocolate cake. When my wife ordered it she just requested chocolate not realizing they would give a dark chocolate cake. Maybe good for adults but for a group of kids to leave most of a pretty expensive cake was worrisome. Even with that we decided to go with them for my daughters wedding. Long story short we placed an order and gave the $100 deposit. My daughter and her fiancé are in Japan and soon after going back to Japan made the decision to delay the wedding till they returned stateside permanently. I know the $100 deposit was non-refundable so I asked if I could just order a birthday cake for my wife’s birthday. No go can’t change the order. I asked if I could just get the wedding cupcakes, nope can’t order less than originally planned. Tried to tell me the contract says that but there is nothing in the contract that states you can’t reduce your order. Not worth pursuing for $100 but if you go with them order the minimum you can as you can always increase. Also be aware that the prices are pretty high for their wedding cakes and cupcakes compared to the average in the Harrisburg area. Went with them because my daughter was happy with what they offered. I have no problem paying extra for a good product and service but when I have an owner/manager being so inflexible they lost my business and anyone else I know that is looking for a recommendation. I should note I hardly ever take time to even write a bad review of anyone so the fact that I took the time to write this should speak volumes.

Cretia Cakes Bake Shop – Menu with Prices – 5434 W 86th St, Indianapolis

I came here a few days ago just to try the cupcakes . This place is located in a small plaza on a very busy part of west 86th street. I called ahead of time to make sure they were open because it seem like the few times I drove past they would already be close at like. When I came in I was greeted right away. In the showcase was cheesecake slices, cookies and cupcakes . There was something else but I just can’t remember what it was. I went ahead and got all four cupcakes which was a strawberry, chocolate, lemon, and confetti. The total was $7. So each cupcake was about $1.75 a piece . They were good as well. I just wish this place had a bigger variety of flavors. Maybe one day I’ll come back and try something else. Ps. This place is very clean. I love all the space and the decor. Nice choice of colors !

K Squared Cupcakes – Menu with Prices – 200 N Battlefield Blvd, Chesapeake

This place is hands down has the best cupcakes I have ever had! I’ve tried a variety of cupcakes in the area and I have to say that these are by far the absolute best!!! What I like most about this place is that they are able to offer a variety of cupcake flavors, while still getting each flavor SPOT ON! The carrot cake taste like carrot cake, the red velvet, like red velvet, the strawberry, lemonade like strawberry lemonade. In addition to these classic flavors they have a variety of innovative flavors that are also spot on that I enjoy. I’m not big on chocolate they have one cupcake featuring the flavor that is actually one of my favorites. I’m a person that prefers more savory flavors, but this place definitely brings out my inner sweet tooth! The facility seems to be very clean. The service is great!!! It appears to be a family owned business and the owner and other staff are always very warm and friendly, and very accommodating. As expected, because of just how good these cupcakes are they frequently sell out of certain flavors. However, they always seem to be prepared and have extra cupcakes available and will readily put the correct frosting on top to complete your order. Overall this place is AMAZING!!!!! But what puts the icing on top of the cupcake lol is that they always are professional and deliver. I have placed large special orders with them for events and they always are able to get me exactly what I need and exceed my expectations. I’m happy knowing I can rely on them. I will continue to frequent the location to satisfy my sweet tooth, and for special order for special occasions.

Simply Sweets – Menu with Prices – 607 Washington St, Vancouver

This was our first time ordering a custom cake here for my sons’ birthday party. First, it’s a cute little place. I did have a short deadline (about 5 days) for a custom 2 tier cake, but the lady I spoke with on the phone said it wouldn’t be a problem. When I went in to actually order and go over everything with a designer, I was a bit surprised they didn’t even offer to let me taste a few different flavors. But I had heard from several people their cakes are very good, so I wasn’t concerned. Since it was short notice, they said I could only choose from the 6 flavors they had available in the display case that week. Ok, no problem- I chose 2. Again, they didn’t offer to let me taste anything. My mistake… I’m gluten free, but I should have asked anyway. The day of the party, we picked up the cake. It was fabulous! Absolutely beautiful design and exactly how we’d described. Then we tasted it… and yuck ? The top tier, which was gluten free, was completely dry. Good flavor, but DRY. Like crumbling. And yes, I know it’s gluten free and all, but I have ordered numerous custom gluten free cakes from various bakeries in Portland before. This was terrible. Ok, fine- let’s try the regular tier on the bottom. Sadly, same thing… so dry all of the icing was coming off in whole chunks. I’m sorely disappointed that we wasted hundreds of dollars on a dry cake, but it is what it is. All of this to say- it was a gorgeous, albeit super stale tasting, old cake.

Nana’s Tiny Cakes LLC – Menu with Prices – 9014 NE St Johns Rd #102, Vancouver

Nana’s is my go-to place for cupcakes in Vancouver. I’ve ordered over 15 dozen mini-cupcakes in the three years since finding Nana’s. I’ve had them cupcake cater my dad’s funeral since he LOVED their gluten-free cupcakes, I’ve taken them to parties, given a bunch as gifts. Everyone I’ve ever had try them, gets addicted. I’ve actually got 3 women mad at me, because they live in the area and now get cupcake cravings- so they all tell me they stop to pick one up every once in a while to get their cravings fulfilled. My personal favorite is their Key Lime, followed by the Root Beer Float, Chocolate… and normally I HATE carrot cake, but I accidentally ate one at my dad’s funeral, and loved it… so the carrot cake ones are my 4th favorite, lastly my 5th favorite is Lemon. They are dense cupcakes like some people have complained about ( Like seriously? Who complains about a dense cupcake? what do you want a twinkie cupcake sponge?)… and they are cupcakes- frosting is sugary, but its not over the top too sweet. I reading through these reviews and someone was complaining about their cupcakes because of this… did you not buy one to try it first? I always buy one to try if its a flavor I haven’t tried before. Nana’s is way way way superior to store bought cupcakes. And they offer a limited selection of cookies now and if you don’t want to get addicted, stay away from the Peanut Butter Bomb’s. OMGosh- so, so so good. The staff is always great and I enjoy stopping by now just to say hello, even if I don’t have a reason for getting cupcakes. If I could give Nana’s a rating on 1 to 5, I’d give them a 10

Courtney’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 7773 Coldwater Rd, Fort Wayne

Stopped by Courtney’s Bakery after finding out that gender of baby #2. We asked if they could make up a couple of “gender reveal” cupcakes & they graciously did! Staff went above and beyond to decorate and create cupcakes just for us! The cupcakes are adorable! And one of them is even gluten free! Highly recommend stopping by if you are in town! Such a nice little bakery to visit! Did I mention the cupcakes and cinnamon rolls are to die for?!
