We stopped in yesterday on our way home from Waldameer Park, and we were very impressed! We split an app of calamari, which was very good, with good flavor/seasoning and a nice light breading. Both my Mom and sister had wings and french fries, and said that they enjoyed them. They both commented that liked the sauces a lot (my Mom especially liked the sirracha), and were impressed with the variety of options available. I had the seafood platter, which had fried smelt, fried haddock, fried shrimp, a baked potato, cole slaw, and a breadstick. I enjoyed it, and it was very high quality and cooked well. My only minor complaint was that the haddock’s breading was slightly dry, but the fish itself was still tender and flaky. Our waiteress was very friendly and attentive, and I was praticularly happy that the restaurant offered Coors Banquet beer, as 99.9% of bars I’ve ever been to only have Coors Light for some reason. Overall, we were very impressed, and will definitely be back next year when we go back to Waldameer.

Good Kitchen 614 – Menu with Prices – 1485 Sunbury Rd, Columbus

I thought I saw a new sign on this building, and then I saw a crowd the other day, so I stopped in as soon as I could. It’s a little place in a small strip mall. Carryout, mainly, though there is a small counter where you could eat a quick lunch. Several kinds of fried fish, fried chicken, pork chops, etc. There was a meatloaf special the day I went. Choose your meat and get two sides- but you’ll have trouble narrowing it down to two, so you might want to get some extras! It all smelled and looked great. I got the fried perch, with mac and cheese and greens; and smothered pork chops, with cabbage and sweet potato casserole. They also had mashed potatoes, broccoli casserole, and a few other sides. The perch was perfect: hot, tender and flaky, light breading. The pork chops were very good: meaty, fried up nicely, with a good gravy. The mac and cheese was very good home-made style (though it has to compete with Sweetie’s mom’s pinnacle of excellence, and it is close but not up there.) The greens were excellent- vinegary, tender, flavorful. The cabbage was perfect: not overcooked, and a few other veggies thrown in for color. The sweet potatoes were so good I had to slow myself down. Service was friendly and fast. Prices are very reasonable- we got all that for under $20, and it was plenty. We’ll be back. Even though Sweetie is averse to “shacks” (I told her it’s in a strip mall, not a shack; she was unimpressed.)

Omar’s Seafood & Grill – Menu with Prices – 12520 St Clair Ave, Cleveland

Omar’s has some of the best fried fish you could ever eat, including your homemade fish! It’s always cooked to perfection, crispy on the outside but flaky on the inside. I’ve had their scampi’s and they were good, also had the spaghetti which I wasn’t really a fan of but the fish is BOMB!! The employees are always nice and there’s a lady that works up front that’s super funny and keeps your entertained while you wait on your food. Love going here!

LA Hot Food – Menu with Prices – 1414 Moss St, Lafayette

Finally got to try this place out, perfect spot to go during lent season! Place is pretty small, and it gets pretty packed! Its a to-go place, so there is no seating, but they get you in and out quick! Food is cooked to order, so the you food is always fresh. The people here is friendly and helpful! We had the following: – Shrimp – huge butterflied shrimp, not too much breading! Delicious! – Fish – strips of crispy fried fish, cooked to perfection! This is probably the only time I would choose fish over shrimp! Must get the house made sauces! Tartar sauce well went really well with the seafood, but I also had the honey mustard, which was also good. I cannot wait to come back to try out their other items!

The Fish Cove – Menu with Prices – 158 Swansea Ave, Syracuse

We came in a little bit ago on a Friday and definitely enjoyed our fish. It seems to me that every time we come here their fried fish has always been on point. It’s also really nice that their staff is friendly. Almost every time you go into a fried fish place, its always push push push push rush rush. Here, they are much more chill which is definitely appreciated. The pricing is pretty standard with all of the fried fish places here in Syracuse. I saw a couple of people mention cold fish, but that has never happened when I came. I really always get fish or fish and fries, so I can’t really comment on anything else that they serve. They have a really tasty and fresh tasting tartar sauce though. I recommend coming here or Bayberry for your fried fish.

JW’s Pub & Grub – Menu with Prices – 58 Miller Ave SW, Cedar Rapids

Recently turned 21 and decided to go out for a beer with my two guy friends. Got here to try it out and was extremely unimpressed. First the bartender was being rude to my friends about their IDs when they have been 21 way longer than I have. So we order a Coors light on tap. I get my glass and instantly see a HAIR on the rim of the glass. Bleh! Coors was totally flat for all three of us. And we left right after our first one. Super lame and super disgusted.

Skrimp Shack – Menu with Prices – 1816 Owen Dr, Fayetteville

I came here last week and was very excited about this new place. The wait was tolerable for the number of customers, the food was hot and very tasty. Light breading and cooked just right. I enjoyed it so much I wanted to try again. A few days later it’s like an entirely different place. Our order ( whiting and shrimp) took 48 minutes to be delivered. I asked the server about the delay and was given the standard ‘cooked to order’ line. Sure- but the fish was room temperature cold. The fries were also way past hot and fresh. I will say the shrimp was still excellent. I returned to the counter to complain about the fish. A few minutes later the server returned and chunked the refried fish across the table without even a casual ‘sorry about that’. And honestly, if you’re going to blast high intensity aggressive rap music full blast across the restaurant, you need a better system of delivering the plates to the table than someone hollering meekly from the register. We couldn’t even hear each other talk the whole meal, and spent that long 48 minutes going ‘did they say us?’ Whatever happened the last few days- fix it, please. I might give you one more chance, but not if it stays like this.

Fresco’s Fish and Chips – Menu with Prices – 201 Augusta Ave, Toronto

Personally one of the best fish and chips places in Toronto for me. I’m slightly addicted? I usually get the haddock or halibut, but wanted to try something else and opted for the shrimp today. Like their fish, the fried shrimp was oh so delish! The batter, which is part of why I love this place, is sooooo flaky and light. Doesn’t feel heavy or oily at all. Size of the shrimp was also pretty substantial. Nowhere does it say so, but it’s what I’d call “jumbo”. The whole thing is fried to perfection, crispy outside batter paired with plump and succulent shrimp. I dip it in their tartar sauce like I would fish, but that’s just my typical irresistible urge to dunk fried foods sauces. Now onto the “chips”. Their regular hand cut fries are pretty decent, but I usually substitute for sweet potato fries. Again, super light and crispy outside, then soft inside, paired with chipotle mayo. (I’ve also tried their onion rings, which became my one and only, however tiny, disappointment with Freso’s. It’s breaded not battered. For a place that has perfect fish batter, they breaded their onion rings… sigh) Overall though, this place is a winner. Massive portions. Super chill environment, oldies music, excellent service. Owner(?) is super accommodating and friendly. You can tell he cares about the satisfaction and opinion of his customers. Will so so so be back.

Joshua’s Gulfport Seafood – Menu with Prices – 2907 Fruitvale Ave, Oakland

This was my first time here and I ordered a two piece fish (bass) and prawn with fries for $8. It was delicious. What most fish places do understand is that fish needs to be cooked in cornmeal. Not some flour hybrid mixture!!! My fish was crunchy on the outside, soft and flaky on the inside and seasoned to perfection. I also ordered a slice of sweet potato pie, which was good too! I had no idea this place existed until parked in front on my way to the Filipino restaurant across the street. I don’t know if it is considered to be cultural appropriation, but I found it to be hilarious that the Filipino restaurant was blasting rap music into the street while the black owned restauranteurs chose a more modest approach. Anyway, I digress. You want fried fish? Skip las palmas and come here.

Casa Viva Mexican/Seafood – Menu with Prices – 18911 S Tamiami Trail #17, Fort Myers

Went here for dinner on a Saturday night. We came in and sat down and it was at least 10 minutes before we ever even saw an employee. She finally came over and handed us some worn out dirty menus. We ordered guacamole and chips to start. It was a bowl full of some kind of soupy avocado mixture and came with a small amount of chips. It had an odd flavor and was not good. We did not receive any chips and salsa like most Mexican restaurants offer. Two of us had the fish tacos which came with some fried shrimp on the side and French Fries. Not sure why tacos do not come with rice & beans. The “fish taco” was one small piece of fried fish, not even as long as the tortilla, with a little cabbage and a lot of sauce. Not good. The fried shrimp were really just some breading and a tail. The only reason I give them 2 stars is because the prices are low, our beer was cold and my husband had chicken enchiladas that he enjoyed. The service was not good and the place could use a deep cleaning.

JJ Fish & Chicken – Menu with Prices – 1926 Needmore Rd, Dayton

Kinda upset that I worked right by the place, but had never been. Because. MmmmmMmmmmn. GOOD! Although, I’ve only been once…I will be back again and again. (With or w/o the guy that introduced me 2 this treasure). We each got the catfish nugget meal. BOMB!!! Each catfish nugget was a party in my mouth.Perfectly breaded. Not heavy and thick; which I despise in fried fish. But, not at all scant, sparse, or falling off the fish, either. The texture was crisp, light, not at all greasy, and best of all, a “cornmeal breading”, my FAVE!The portion was super generous. Fries were ur basic “fried fish meal” fries, but…they were sprinkled w this magical seasoning.–Think salt, meets lemon pepper, w/a fairy dusting of sugar. I think a fairy works in the kitchen, FR.?I normally don’t eat the bootleg, “wonder” bread w/fried fish meals, not because I’m scurred of carbs…it’s just not something I ever want. However, I ate both slices…so, I can tell u, the catfish makes 4 a good fried fish sandie w/tartar and hot sauce, but is better on it’s own. Def try it both ways, 2 find out which u prefer. As 4 the coleslaw, that came w the meal, it was perfectly average, setting the meal off w crisp, fresh, mayo(y), sweetness. I can’t wait 2 go back here! We’re going back on Monday, and I’m counting my “sleeps”. I think maybe I’ll make it my mission 2 try (mostly) every meal on the menu. Cuz, I goal SO hard. So, hey! Stop reading this & go enjoy this gem in the gem city. But, DON’T ask 4 extra hot sauce.? 3.5 stars

Galle’s Seafood Menu with Prices 31 Laney Walker Blvd, Augusta

I hadn’t had Galle’s in years and I don’t know why I stopped eating here. I never had a bad experience here or anything. So it behooves me why I had been here in a long time!!! This place is right around the corner from my house to, so it is really a big mystery that I think Scooby Doo and his team can solve!!! I had a craving for fried fish and okra all weekend long. I had to get some because I would died, literally. If I don’t satisfy my craving, anything I eat won’t satisfy me until I get what I have been craving!!! The food settled my craving and so much more. First off, the service was exception. Everyone from the owner to the cooks to the employee cutting the grass greeted me so warmly. They may have been flirting a bit, but that’s a different story!!! Lol!!! I saw that they had filleted Bream. I can’t eat fish with a bone, it always has to be filleted. I ordered double okra and the meal also came with 3 hush puppies. I always request that my fish is fried extra crispy. The owner made sure my order was correct before he put it in. This was the first fish market I ate in that they actually pulled the fish from the display cooler and cook it for you for one of the dinners. The cook came out and assured me he cooked the fish to my specifications, that was another first!!! The food was AMAZING!!! The cook even put mustard and hot sauce inside my box without me asking for it!!! That’s the only way I eat my fried fish. The okra was very tasty as well, seasoned to perfection. I always love finding quality fish markets because lately a lot of the fish markets I frequent have been going down hill with their service and quality of food. I hope this meal wasn’t a fluke and they are this good all the time!!! I’m ready for my next round of fried fish!!!

Apple Barrel Cafe #4 on Mingo – Menu with Prices – 9701 E 61st St, Tulsa

Note: Moving my previous review, which was tagged at the Bixby location, to this one, now that they have a Yelp! page. Let me preface this review by saying that this is for the NEW Apple Barrel Cafe location on 61st and Mingo, where the Cookhouse used to be, and before that, The Bros Houligan. Now, that said…. this place is stellar. We went in for a late lunch this last Saturday, while in the neighborhood, having wanted to try them out since they opened. Due to the time, a pretty light crowd was in the dining area, so seating was plentiful. We were cheerfully seated and given menus, with our drink order taken. Being first timers, we took a while to peruse the menu, which, while not overly large, is still able to accommodate almost any taste. The Kid went with….. wait for it…… spaghetti and meatballs. The Son went with a Chicken Fried Steak and Fries, having already had their Chicken Fried Chicken on his own (which he said was pretty much the bomb). The wife threw me a curve and chose the Philly Steak Sandwich, and I decided to live on the wild side and chose the fried cod and fries. Three of us had a side salad ahead of the entrees, which were all fresh, flavorful and well put together. As with another review, the dressing is indeed in a little cup w a lid, and it was a really good ranch. I can’t say that the dressing cup was a distraction in the least. In a really short time (as in we were just finishing up the salads), our entrees arrived. The Kid’s spaghetti was generous and covered with shaved parmesan… not the cardboard cheese. She pretty much loved it and said is was as good as any other place she gets spaghetti. The Son’s CFS was really, really good. He offered me a bite for the sake of my review. Breading was flavorful and light, without overpowering the meat, which was a generously thick slice of really tender beef. This fries, like mine, and those in the pictures were a really unique type of fry. They were big enough to have a slightly crispy exterior, and still have plenty of fluffy, hot interior. In other words, they were pretty darn good, even if they did look different. The Wife really enjoyed her Philly, offering me a bite as well. The meat was flavorful and well seasoned, the veggies cooked perfectly. It also had a good balance of meat to bread, which is always nice. The fried cod, usually a risky proposition in Tulsa, turned out to be a well placed gamble. Thin an slightly flaky, they weren’t the usual cod loins one thinks of, but rather planks of cod in a nice, well flavored batter, perfectly fried. The cole slaw side was your basic run of the mill cole slaw with nothing to really distinguish it, but seriously… it’s cole slaw. Service was spot on, with our server being there when we needed her and not when we didn’t. I sampled a little of everything on the table, and loved every bite. The Apple Barrel is for sure on our list of new favorites.
