Pastries of all kinds are my heart’s delight, bordering on obsession, and I first must apologize deeply to all of you to whom pan dulce is a familiar comfort for the ungenerous flings I have made on occasion on the subject of Mexican baking. I based my judgment on the few dusty, crumbly conchas whose pastel shades nevertheless caught my eye in the plastic bins of ethnic groceries from here to California. Thanks to the wonderful Panaderia La Gloria, I now know this was like dismissing croissants in general based on a few week-old specimens from the Albertsons bakery — rank foolishness for which I’m deeply sorry. Apologies to the cognoscenti, and for the benefit of all of you who’ve never had fresh pan dulce I will say that, as with croissants, freshness is everything — the rich, none-too-sweet doughs are at their best for half a day at most and transportation is not kind to the fragile decorations of many of these fine pastries. I stumbled in there as a newcomer last week, not knowing the name for anything but the ubiquitous concha and empanada, and am immensely grateful to the proprietress for the brief lesson and for patiently enduring my intolerable attempts at pronunciation. From the perspective of European baking from which pan dulce traces its descent, the conchas and all their variants at PLG share a rich, eggy dough that bears comparison with the finest brioche I’ve ever tasted. The laminated-dough items, the pineapple-filled Taco and something like a cream horn for example, strangely remind me of the kind of robust puff pastry used to enclose barbecued pork at dim sum — perhaps lard is the common element, unctuous and flaky. I had a beautiful little cheesecake with a dark, caramelized swirly top that would have graced the finest china plate, and a gloriously light and springy coconut sponge jelly roll called a niño envuelto — wrapped-up baby. The pastry crust of the empanada was amazingly soft and tender (though the strawberry filling was a little rubbery) and the rich shortbread on the bottom of the sevillano blended seamlessly with what amounted to a hidden icing beneath all the powdered sugar that clung charmingly to the backs of my incisors The dry and crumbly cinnamon-and-chocolate-tinged elote (which looks like an ear of corn) virtually demanded a cup of strong coffee to dunk it in, whereupon it left all thoughts of biscotti and other dunkers far behind. I emerged full of envy for those of you who grew up on this bounty and stunned by the find and the incredible variety — it features all the labor and decorative efforts of the finest French bakery at, not to put too fine a point on it, the price of a doughnut. I advise all fellow devotees of the pâtisserie to take up the plastic tray and tongs, open the glass-fronted cabinet to your right (not neglecting the pastries in the case to your left) and graze in a pasture that is wonderfully green.

Pasteleria Rufy – Menu with Prices – 2911 Tazewell Pike, Knoxville

Wonderful Mexican bakery! It has all kinds of sweet bread (pan dulce) including bolillos, conchas, donas, and churros. They also have cakes and pastries. We simply love this place! They are working on having a sign outside the store, but follow your GPS to find it within the small shopping strip.

Mainwood Pastry – Menu with Prices – 113 W Elder St, Cincinnati

There aren’t too many places in OTR where you can get a croissant, let alone a good one. I was trying to go to French Crust, but they were closed on a Friday morning which was strange. Blue Oven Bakery didn’t have any croissants at that time of the day either. So I checked on Yelp and it pointed me to Mainwood Pastry. It’s a small shop, but I was happy to see that there were croissants. Even though the almond croissants looked great, I decided on getting 2 chocolate croissants (pain au chocolat). The outside pastry was flaky and the chocolate was well distributed throughout the croissant. The inside layers near the chocolate were a little stuck together and not as airy. But the croissants were still delicious and better done than your grocery store bakery. Great with a hot cup of coffee. Well worth aimlessly wandering around Findlay market.

Don Panchos Bakery – Menu with Prices – 140 Cesar Chavez St, St Paul

Had I known what an ice rink the roads were, I might have passed on the pastries today, but I didn’t and either did the droves of cars at the bakery. My parents gave me a coupon for $5.00 off @ Don Panchos. I think they thought I had purchased the croissants I brought them previously from Don Panchos, when in fact they were from Trung Nam. This is cute, and what looks to be family run bakery over in the Del Sol district. They have cases of freshly baked, inviting pastries and cakes. I love the smell of bakeries. They were bringing pans of fresh made loaves of french bread and dumping into a bin in the front. I wasn’t clear on whether or not I should help myself, so I asked and the young boy pointed me to the baskets sitting on the counter. I wasn’t too jazzed about using those- they looked kind of dirty, so I just lined it with some of the bakery tissue paper, took the tongs and purchased the following: – 3 churros which were nothing spectacular. -2 plain croissants which were ok. A little heavy and not light and fluffy like Trung Nam -1 cream cheese (I think) croissant which was delicious – 2 sugar donuts – chocolate filled empanada and something that looked like a biscuit. Not quite sure about that thing yet. I’ll have J try that one. Most of the items are labeled w/ prices. For all that with coupon it came to only $5.75 which was pretty cheap. Glad I tried it, but honestly I think I’ll have to stick to the heavenly croissants at Trung Nam.. This place is worth a visit though.

Cesiah’s Panaderia – Menu with Prices – 1519 34th St, Lubbock

I’ve been here multiple times and every time, the breads and pastries have been excellent. Every day, there is a different selection of items and there are many breads to choose from. The breads are also very cheap, ranging from $.50 to $1, which is a very good deal. My favorite things to get here are the churros and the cake. The churros are filled with cream so the contrast between the crispy churro and soft pastry cream is really nice. I think that the churros are baked because they aren’t as greasy as typical churros, which I like as it doesn’t leave me feeling heavy. I like the cake because it is very moist and has the right amount of sweetness. There are different types of cake, but my favorite is the one with strawberry and cream cheese swirls. They also have the typical pan dulce such as conchas and cuernos. Their conchas are pretty good. The bread is extremely soft and the icing on top adds a nice sweetness. The cuernos are like the conchas but shaped as a horn and the bread is lightly seasoned with cinnamon which is a nice addition. Along with bread, they also have typical Mexican candies and snack, such as mango lollipops with chili and tamarind. They have a fridge where they keep things like oaxaca cheese and rice pudding. They also have fresh tortillas. The place is pretty sketchy but I highly recommend trying it out as the breads and pastries are very well made.

Pano’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 3020 Santa Maria Ave, Laredo

Oh dear. Where to begin…..I discovered this decadent portal into another world while visiting my in-laws house in the “barrio.” Now, from an outsider’s point of view, this Mexican bakery is the cream of the crop. I’ve never had soft conchas before. Usually when I get a concha anywhere else, it is hard already. This place offers up fresh & hot Mexican pastries, donuts, cookies & cakes like no other. I actually wish I hadn’t ever stepped foot in here, because now, every time I visit Laredo, I MUST stop in here, have a friendly chat with the lady behind the counter and indulge in my beloved yellow conchas! I probably gain five pounds from this bakery alone. People, I do NOT exaggerate. This Mexican bakery is beyond my understanding…It is THAT good! Give it a try when you are in Laredo. You won’t be disappointed….

Boulted Bread – Menu with Prices – 614 W South St, Raleigh

It’s slightly rare for me to be on the verge of tears from a pastry but Boulted’s croissants do it every time. It’s almost like each layer of the crispy flaky viennoiserie are placed by hand because they are so delicate. The best sign is the blast radius of croissant flakes around you once you’ve finished–and you won’t realize the mess you’ve mad till the whole thing is gone because it will have mesmerized you for three minutes straight. The sweeter pastries are fantastic too–whether laminated or not they are fluffy tender delights that leave you sad they’re finished at the last bite. Solidly the best bakery in NC. No contest.

Delightful Food Company – Menu with Prices – 201 Winchester Dr, Tyler

I am a good baker myself, so I am always trying different bakeries with a very critical attitude. I was lucky enough to eat one of Delightful Baking Co.’s pumpkin cinnamon rolls last week, from the farmers’ market in Tyler. I am kicking myself that I only bought one. The dough itself is tender and yeasty and pumpkiny. And it is so difficult to make a tender cinnamon roll dough! Usually the outside of the roll is too hard, and the dough is tough or dry. These were perfect in every way — they could not be improved upon. Just as good was the carrot/pineapple quick bread. Don’t know how they made it so moist, tender, and not too oily or just plain uncooked in the middle. Just wonderful. Also extremely difficult to pull off. I want to go be their intern and learn their secrets. (My friend and I enjoyed their peanut butter chocolate chip cookies as well.)

La Noisette Sweets Menu with Prices 2701 Eighth St #116, Berkeley

BEST FRENCH BAKERY IN THE EAST BAY! I love this place. I’ve only been here twice but entering the bakery was like entering a small patisserie in France. So many scrumptious items to eat. It was overwhelming. I could’ve eaten pretty much everything that they had. And the things I did get word incredibly good. I highly recommend this place for anyone with a predilection for French bakery. FOOD: well of course they got me to come in because this place features galette des rois which is a special French pastry only made during the month of January. It celebrates the Epiphany or Three Kings Day and it is such a beautiful and delicate tasting delight. The one that they have here is better than almost every one I have ever had. And that includes the ones I have had in France! They have a nice variety of both savory and sweet items, mostly breakfast items. My croque was not hot but nothing a few seconds in the microwave could not fix. We also got a number of other pastries and they were expertly made. If you like French pastries which tend to be a little bit less sweet bunch more flaky in buttery, you’ll really like the selection here. SERVICE: Excellent! The owner is not only talented at baking but is also incredibly nice. So is the staff. They are really helpful especially with trying to figure out what is in each item. If you are unfamiliar with European baking terms or types, they are more than willing to help you find one that will be a good fit for you. Plus it’s just super yummy. It is obvious that they care a lot about their products and want you to enjoy. COST: reasonable. If you are used to paying $.75 for a donut, you might be a little bit shocked. But for this type of pastry, they are reasonable even if the quality was not as good as it is. But since it is so good, I think it’s more than fair to pay the price they ask. On average each pastry cost about four dollars. However some of the fancier ones like the galette des rois cost more. All in all it is a worthwhile investment.

Amaro’s Bakery – Menu with Prices – 6408 Padre Island Hwy, Brownsville

I don’t know about the previous reviewer, but their conchas are the best I’ve ever tried, the bread is super soft and the one time I’ve had bread left over it lasted almost a week before it got hard and it never got mold. I’m not rich by any means, but I though that their prices were super cheap and I’m able to buy over a dozen for about four dollars. It is not the best looking bakery, but the bread is awesome.

Pandorée Restaurant – Bakery – Bar – Menu with Prices – 195 NW 36th St #3107, Miami

It’s a cute little bakery on an ugly street, but this area is still upcoming. I was going to Guarapo next door when I saw this spot. There is outside seating, both tables as couches. They have a variety of pastries and the usual what a bakery offers. Outside you would not expect what a wonderful place you walk in. Lots of space and seating, nice music. And the display is excellent. I ordered the 3+1 free pastries. I got almond croissants and Danish. I have to say they are very big in size but not the best I’ve had. The croissants are a little too dry for me. Even the almond croissants at Whole Foods are a lot better and closer to what we have in Europe as there’s frangipane inside; Here there’s not. If you don’t know what frangipane is or have it then you should get another baker in there. The Danish was so dry, couldn’t eat it. I ate the part that was moist with the fruit but had to throw away the rest. I doubt the owner is French as it’s more an attempt to get close to the real thing. Or maybe they are not trying to be a French bakery just copying some items but not being really good at it. All stars are for layout and how good the business is to look at, displays are so organized and give a clean feel. it is more than a bakery, it is a good spot to meet for coffee. They have a parking lot and there is street parking.

Danish Pastry Co. – Menu with Prices – 2031 Tyler St, Hollywood

Adorable bakery & coffee house with fantastic pastries & wonderful service. It’s a cozy place with about four tables, and a counter with a hand full of stools facing the street. It’s clean, well kept and has a shabby chic all white decor with nice natural lighting. I had planned to drop in early Sunday afternoon but time got away from me. So before heading out there I checked the Yelp app and it stated it was closing at 4pm. I arrived around 3:05pm only to find the door locked. Disappointed I stood there double checking the app. As I was doing so Diane opened the doors. She kindly advised they now close at 3pm on Sunday’s but welcomed me in anyway and to my surprise advised the pastries were half off! Awesome! Apparently right before closing they sell whatever is left of the pastries at half price. I’m not sure if this starts an hour or half before closing but it’ a nice bonus. ***GOODIES*** Butter Croissant Raspberry/Almond cream cheese pastry Five different mini pastries These are some fantastic croissants and pastries I must say. Their pastry dough for both the croissant & sweet pastries is lovely. It has a light flaky exterior with layers of soft pillowy delicious goodness in the interior. The filings and toppings were just as scrumptious. The jams they use as the fillings/toppings taste like someones grandmother made it. They had fresh bright natural flavors & sweetness. The chocolate and cream cheese fillings were just as yummy and luscious as the jams. The fact that I purchased these pastries late afternoon on Sunday had no bearing on their freshness and taste. Even the two mini pastries that survived the night tasted fresh and just as good the next morning. I can tell you the coffee is good too. I prefer lattes but the machine had been shut done for the day so Diane offered me some of their coffee to try. It was shockingly smooth with absolutely no bitterness, delightful cup of joe. I was really pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome, kind service and fantastic pastries. I will for sure be back soon!!

Misky Bakery – Menu with Prices – 505 N 27th St, Lincoln

Ext to the armed forces recruitment center on 27th between Vine and O street is Misky’s Bakery. It’s a small women owned Latino Bakery with dozens of made by scratch pastries. I decided to try a couple of pastries and get a tamale to go for later. I recognized many of the items in the display, but they were in their Latino name. Croissants, churros. English shortbread. And of course a few that look delicious which I will have to try later. Definitely a place to stop in for a bite sometime.
