All I want for Christmas is something, ANYTHING besides All I Want For Christmas (Is You) Look, I have craze respect for Mariah Carey. Even though I can’t name a single song (besides, obviously, All I Want For Christmas (Is You)), the woman is a phenomenal singer. I just can’t understand the need to showcase her 8-octave range on EVERY. SINGLE. NOTE!! That quirk aside, a damn fine singer. Decided to surprise my wife with a visit here, one of her favorite Vietnamese restaurants, because I’m such a spectacular and thoughtful husband. (Fine. It’s an outright lie, but I do have my moments!) This place is notorious for having long waits. However, I noticed they now had a Waitlist on Yelp you could sign on to. Was currently saying 5-15 minutes. Eccellente!! Signed in. IMMEDIATELY got a text informing I was added, and MOMENTS later got a phone call saying my table was ready. We hadn’t even made it to the car yet to drive over!! I ain’t complainin’! Drive over, find great parking, walk in and immediately seated. In a booth!! Not shoved in among the pedantic masses!! I’m a happy boy!! They’re obviously in full holiday spirit, because the beginning strains of Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas (Is You) fill the place. Cool!! Great holiday song!! Very soulful!! Next on the holiday playlist: Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas (Is You). Funny!! The same song!! However, it’s time for something different, which turned out to be Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas (Is You.) Fourth song, I kid you not!! Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas (Is You.) During ordering I inquired who the Mariah fan was. The waiter obviously recognized the snark in my tone, because they finally hit the NEXT button! Wasn’t the last we heard of ol’ Mariah, though! Anyhoo, made for a great lead-in. More of a diner than restaurant, that specializes in Vietnamese seafood and hot pots. We ordered a melange or clams and scallops. They were out of their famous razor clams, so we got them bloody instead. I went with Coke, since the drink during my inaugural visit didn’t impress me. The shell fishies all tasted exotically delectable, And once again, the service was well above average for a Vietnamese place. The atmosphere…. there is no atmosphere actually. It’s not romantic, or hip, or faux nouveau upscale with a bohemian flair, it’s just a place to eat and then leave. Doesn’t matter…. so long as the food’s good, the service is attentive, and the wait is short, we’ll be back. But, not until after the New Year, because I’ve reached my limit of hearing Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas (Is You) for the current holiday season!

Pockets Pool & Pub – Menu with Prices – 1062 S Wilmot Rd, Tucson

Pockets has some great employees, good food, and quality pool tables, but something I’ve noticed really bothers me. They have juke box music, and quite often if a pleasant classic rock song comes on, the bartender will boot the song. If an obnoxious rap “song” comes on, then they’ll be happy with it. Their juke box is up to $1 per song on many songs. A minority of songs might be only 50 cents. Either way, if I’ve paid to hear a song, you don’t just knock it off on a whim. Completely ridiculous.

Heckenberger’s Seafood Menu with Prices 1835 W Chew St, Allentown

Bubba has thee best clams ever. The top necks are amazing. No grit, great flavor, and always fresh. I do not buy my clams anywhere else. Last time we got 250, every single clam opened, and not one had grit or sand. Thanks Bubba for consistently having an amazing product.

Yes, everyone, this lovely beauty is located in the Holiday Inn! Ladies and gentlemen.. . Let me introduce you to Skyview Lounge, located on the 17th floor of the Holiday Inn and is open from afternoons till 11PM every single DAY! I first heard about this beauty as I was searching for random things to do in Downtown Mobile. With this being 5 mins from my hotel, I simply couldn’t pass this up. Skyview Lounge offers amazing 360 views of the City of Mobile and is fabulous to come in either in the day or night. I actually arrived around Sunset and was greeted by the lovely bartender for the evening, Kaci! Kaci and I were the only two in the lounge for hours! There was simply NO ONE in clear sight.. ..(Where was the crowd?) Beats me! Kaci and I had a great time talking and laughing about the little City of Mobile. Gentleman, if you’re looking for that panty-dropping lounge that will WOW the ol’ lady, then look no further! Skyview lounge cannot be compared to Dauphine’s! You must see it to believe it. Not only are the drinks delicious, but the views are out of this universe! Definitely, a place to come check out no matter what the occasion is!

Georgia Symphony Orchestra – Menu with Prices – Marietta Performing Arts Center, 1171 Whitlock Ave NW, Marietta

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY POPS! My husband and I recently attended the JCSO Christmas Holiday Pops concert, which was held at the Johns Creek United Methodist Church, (JCUMC) on Medlock Bridge. This was our first full experience attending the symphony in Johns Creek. The symphony performed along with the very polished Johns Creek Chorale. The venue is absolutely beautiful but, it is a sanctuary and not a concert hall. This is an issue because the room is furnished with very narrow, uncushioned church pews. The seating was very uncomfortable and really puzzling when you consider that this is a relatively modern space, with a very mature audience. During intermission, everyone “had to” stand up just to stretch their backs and adjust. I can honestly say that I have not sat on pews like these in decades and would only expect to see them in a very old building. Ironically, our performances are usually held in restored historic theaters, with much better seats. The performances were top-notch and I was super impressed with the chorale which is now in its second year. When it comes to Christmas music, I want it traditional and nostalgic. I want to know that I am at a CHRISTMAS concert. The first portion of the concert was dominated by unfamiliar selections and interesting arrangements which affected my ability to stay engaged. During intermission, I chatted with a couple of women who commented on the unfamiliar music and lack of energy during the first half of the performance. I agreed. However, following intermission the concert picked up significantly with more familiar and energetic selections. By far the most exciting performance was that of Sleigh Ride which included great special effects and reminded me of the type of performance you would expect from a more youthful orchestra. When it comes to Christmas performances, I tend to prefer those that are performed by youth choirs and orchestras because the energy is great and you always come away with that feeling of nostalgia and great memories of Christmas’s past. Regardless of the genre of music, I like being snatched up and taken away to a point where nothing else matters. The last great Christmas performance I attended was performed by the Chattanooga Boys Choir and they had me from beginning to end. I still remember the tears streaming down my face as they were performing. It was an incredible five-star performance. During their next Christmas performance, I hope that they consider a more comfortable venue and a more traditional selection of music. Meanwhile, I will still support the Johns Creek Symphony. However, that support is more likely to be at a summer concert in the park where I can bring my own comfortable chair! ***We were still feeling that back ache this morning!

Pho Hoa An (PHA) Restaurant – Menu with Prices – 7451 Edinger Ave #104, Huntington Beach

My experience here was not as positive as was the case at the numerous other Vietnamese restaurants I have dined at in the past. I am basing my criticism on the following points: 1) The entrée I ordered was Grilled Pork with Steamed Rice. I was not provided with fish sauce upon delivery of the dish to my table, and I had to ask the server for a bowl of it. I found this to be utterly astounding, as I have experienced this at no other Vietnamese restaurant when ordering a dish of this type. 2) I should also note that the bowl of fish sauce I was provided with was quite stingy in portion – without a doubt, the smallest portion size I have ever received at any Vietnamese restaurant to accompany a pork and rice dish. It was so small I had to ask for a 2nd bowl after I exhausted the 1st bowl. Was war declared this morning, and mandatory rationing of fish sauce as a strategic material declared along with it??? 3) Also of interesting note is iceberg lettuce accompanied the pork and rice (I can’t name any other Vietnamese restaurant that does this). I would not consider this an inherently bad thing … had the restaurant thoughtfully provided dressing to go along with it … which they did not. I had to use the bottle of Hoisin sauce on the table to give it some flavor. 4) I get that this is Huntington Beach, and things may be more expensive here (than, say … Rosemead or San Gabriel). But even taking that into account … given the portion size and the aforementioned points, I honestly felt very disappointed and a little cheated, knowing that I paid $10.95+tax for this meal. Is it unfair to judge this restaurant like this based solely on a single visit and consumption of a single dish? Perhaps. However, if a Vietnamese restaurant cannot serve a satisfactory pork and rice plate, it is quite difficult for me to have any confidence in the possibility that their other dishes will be any more appetizing.

La Peche Gourmet – Menu with Prices – 1147 Bardstown Rd, Louisville

I was leaving town and arriving back on Christmas, so dropped into Lilly’s take out to get food for our holiday meal. The food was incredible. Their beef bourguignon with noodles was really out of this world, even after being frozen and reheated. I picked up four petite creme brûlée and the staff gave me unsolicited but badly needed advice on how to keep it fresh for several days. It was their suggestion to have custard and shells packaged separately and even sent me home with a little brown sugar. A gentlemen brought out a propane torch and demonstrated how to carmelize the topping. The lady who waits on me asked questions about when I was serving the food and was extremely helpful. On Christmas I came back home to easily construct a meal worthy of any of louisvilles finest restaurants. My guests raved about each dish! Thanks Kathy for having such thoughtful and helpful staff. I never would have been able to put this meal together without them. Our Christmas dinner was one of the best I’ve ever served!

Dining In Inc – Menu with Prices – 1645 Raoul Wallenberg Blvd, Charleston

It is important to have kosher options whether you live in Charleston or are just visiting. Marcie works hard to provide great kosher food whether for a pop up cafe, hosting a party, or to make your holiday easier. Holiday menus come out before each holiday so that you can order all or even just part of your holiday meal. Holiday and challah orders must be in by Tuesdays at 5pm. Pick-up is on Thursdays from 1pm – 6pm & Friday from 8am – 4pm. Traditional Jewish food made locally. Visiting from out of town? Kosher meals can be delivered to your hotel. My favorite is the cinnamon challah special. Regular challah available weekly. Challah comes in small, large, or dinner rolls. Order ahead, or stop by and hope there is a challah left!

Rosie O’Grady’s Inc – Menu with Prices – 130 E Government St, Pensacola

Rosie O’Grady’s is a MUST if you are visiting Pensacola! This might be the best “nightlife” experience we had while we were there. This isn’t a typical piano bar- everyone here is SO talented and throughout the evening, you might see one person jump from piano, to guitar to drums. It’s an all-inclusive experience when they not only get the crowd involved (and take song requests, of course), but they get the staff involved as well. Rosie’s was PACKED on the night that we were here, and with good reason. At one point, there were 4 people on stage: 2 pianos, a guitar and drums and everyone is GREAT! Since it was David’s birthday, I had them call him up on stage, sing him a song and embarrass him a little bit- all out of love and good fun. He really enjoyed it! Also, on the night that we were here they had different branches of the military “battling” to see who could give the musicians the biggest tip to play their song. The entire crowd got into it and it was a lot of fun. I wish I had discovered Rosie’s a little sooner- we probably would have come back again after our first visit. If you are looking for a laugh, good music and a good time, Rosie O’Grady’s should be your first stop.

Mission Seafood Market – Menu with Prices – 3753 Mission Ave #117, Oceanside

Seafood quality and selection are really good… But a little bit dissatisfied with the pushy service. I went in there expecting to buy 2 lb of clams and discuss that with the lady working the counter then change my mind and decided to buy 3 lb of clams. As she put them in a bag and weighed them she looked over at me and said this is 4 pounds this is okay right!? Before I even had a chance to respond she had already rang them up and put them in a second bag and again said again…this is okay right!? I didn’t want to make things awkward and I was in a rush so I agreed. Totally not cool! I asked for 3 lb and give me 3 lb!

Dream Ice Cream Parlor – Menu with Prices – 5052 West Ln h, Stockton

Sooo…. this place? Not your average ice cream place that you USED to go to ? get it? Because here is where you should go from now on for your ice cream. First thing first, customer service of course… I like the staffs here…. they are professional yet…. not super serious because cmon…. it’s an ice cream place, not a bank :/ these guys and gals are nice, if you don’t know what you want… they will ask questions about your preference and try to help you pick the best combination. Secondly, their selections for ice cream are hmmmm different than other places…. you have to try Vietnamese coffee flavor ice cream if you are a coffee person…. DELISH. The atmosphere here is chill/cool/just great environment…. last but not least… their toppings are bomb….. so many to choose from… you can’t try it all in one visit…. I mean maybe you can it you go in a group, everyone get different things and then share so you can have a bit of everything? I ordered green tea ice cream with Mochi topping, my husband had a donut sandwich with Vietnamese coffee and butter bristles, his toppings were gummy bears and smashed waffle cone. No, I’m not the owner nor am I an employee here, not even a friend of someone who works here to write this review… I’m just a regular customer who loves to try new places and give the honest opinion about the place that I tried.
