TL:DR – Cool seating area, good coffee, ok pastries. —————- Little Ground cafe is about a 15 minute walk from my work, so every now and then, at around 300pm, I’ll go to get some coffee. Maybe it’s because I’m tired, maybe it’s the intense Glendale sun, but that first sip of my iced americano is just what I need. I typically like my coffee, whether that be brewed or as an espresso to be more on the bitter side; I like the more earthy tastes of the beans, rather than a clean acidic taste. That being said, Little Ground has the best balance of both. It leaves me with a boost of energy and a nice taste in my mouth. If I’m feeling extra run down that day, I’ll also pick up a pastry. Since it’s in the afternoon, they are half off and a little bit on the old side, but I really can’t fault them for that. They have a typical spread of coffee cakes, scones, muffins, and cookies, and they are all still tasty. I prefer the orange ginger scone, because it’s not too sweet and pairs perfectly with coffee. The seating area off to the side is pretty cool. A long U shaped concrete bench encases the area, with wooden beams and netting over the top. You would think that the area would get hot during the day, but the concrete stays surprisingly cool. If you have time, it’s nice just to sit down and relax on the cool concrete and forget about everything. hahaha

Dudas Tavern Menu with Prices 1600 Thames St, Baltimore

I’m an out of town visitor looking for dinner in Baltimore. So I go with the flow and order crab cakes and an orange crush. My son was with us and he was not feeling well so we moved outside. Our waitress was very understanding and accommodating. From our short stay inside, I can say that if you like the corner bar atmosphere this is your place. There were maybe a dozen happy hour folks celebrating TGIF. Outside there are maybe a half dozen tables and they are mostly shaded, great for views of the bustling area without being intrusive. On to the food. My orange crush was good and my wife enjoyed her margarita. My son wasn’t digging his ginger ale but he wouldn’t be in love with a bag of fifties at that point. I grade crab cakes on three things; taste, amount of meat vs filler, texture and in that order. Taste – check, little filler – check, texture – just a tad dry. So would I recommend them, absolutely. Would they be on my death row last meal list – no. All in all, a good experience and we would return next time we are in Charm City. My son you ask? He peaked up and wound up eating half of my wife’s cakes. And he loved them.

Cafe Calypso – Menu with Prices – 5425 S Padre Island Dr #185, Corpus Christi

Little tricky to find being out of towners, nav took us to Target. Cafe is located on opposite side of parking lot, street side, across from Kirkland’s. Fantastic craft roaster, with an excellent espresso that’s as good as our fave Starbucks/ Americano. In-house cakes, muffins and cookies (ninja ginja) too including a sugar free option, Mandarin Orange cake that tempted and a regular Mocha. Saving myself for seafood feast but hubby indulged in a soft crumb, super moist apple pecan muffin, not overly sweet. Empty the penny jar, just Cash or Checks here and an ATM right inside by the restrooms

Cafe Cabinet – Menu with Prices – 250 W Ocean Blvd B2, Long Beach

There are a lot of cool coffee shops and great coffee around in Long Beach. However, I see why this place is very special and deserves the 5-stars that it has up-kept. Located between Ocean Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue, is this hidden gem. The owner is very attentive and is very knowledgeable in coffee/beans – so you can ask for recommendations! Also this place is super dog-friendly. I see many dogs coming in and getting treats! I absolutely love the cold brew here! Also, if you ask–the owner can make the cold brew less strong for you, as I am more susceptible to caffeine than others. The cold brew has consistently been the Ethiopia cold brew, which I love best! They now serve scrumptious muffins! Last time I went, they were serving banana muffins, pumpkin muffins, and coffee muffins. I got to try the banana muffin which was was very filling and delicious! They also have cool artwork in the back of the shop and inside the restroom!

Westside Village Bakery – Menu with Prices – 1716 S Robertson Blvd, Los Angeles

This was the best bakery on the westside with brownies that would knock your socks off. The scones were moist and delicious and baked fresh daily along with muffins, cookies, breads, etc. They had the most beautiful decorated cakes and bundt cakes. Lucky for us you can still buy a lot of these delicious baked goods on line at www.westsidevillagebakery.com.

Jenny’s Homemade Cookies – Menu with Prices – 6143 Bridgetown Rd, Cincinnati

These might just be the best cookies that we have ever tasted. Seriously. We got a taste of them at their stand at the Cincinnati Holiday Market this year and we got hooked. The next weekend we tracked the bakery down because we just HAD to have more. Our favorites so far are the Chocolate Chip and the Reese’s Pieces’s cookies. They melt in your mouth..no joke. We talked to Jenny a bit while we were there. Such a nice lady! She was telling us all about the countless different kinds of cookies they offer. It was crazy to hear about all the different varieties. I’m sure they’re all great. What makes these cookies so great? It’s just..every bite is so chewy and flavorful. They just taste so good! I’ve had a lot of different cookies from a lot of different bakeries..and I’ve never been as wholey satisfied so immediately as I was with these cookies. So yea..uber highly recommend you give these cookies a try! You’ll thank me later..it’s so cool to have a hidden gem of a place like this to blow away your friends and family when you have them experience the amazing cookies they produce..ha.

Empanadas y Arepas Factory – Menu with Prices – 5602 N Armenia Ave, Tampa

Street food is very in now and for good reason. Places that specliaze in a particular fun and tasty food made fresh and tasty at an affordable price can fill a niche. These empanadas and arepas are Colombian specialties (Venezuela has similar fare also). Tasty on-the-go or relax and socialize fare. They also have awesome fruit drinks with or without milk which makes it a milkshake (guava, soursop, guava, lulo – a sour fruit not citrus but a bit like orange flavor – and blackberry. I think they also offer avena which is a wheaty beverage. Sort of like Milo maybe? Coffee drinks also. The arepas are white or yellow corn cakes with or without a mild farmer cheese. There are a couple of nice little counter areas to eat at inside and a table or tow plus a nice fenced porch area with tables along busy Armenia Ave. The fruits and empanada types offered vary and sometimes a fruit shake is out of stock, but go flexibles and enjoy a chicken embanada, beef and cheese, ground beef and potato, and pair with garlicky spicy sauce with a kick, green sauce, or sweet sauce (duck sauce). Crispy and yummy fried foods with wholesome fillings!!! They also sell frozen arepa 10 packs woth or eithout cheese to go. Made in house. Cool place. Taste of another land. I enjoyed. Very casual. Homemade.

Bread Basket – Menu with Prices – 7804 E Brainerd Rd # D, Chattanooga

The employees are great, but even if they were mean, their baked goods would be too good to miss. Their cakes are not cheap, but they are worth the price. They almost always have samples for you to try.My favorites are the wonderful tasting cinnamon rolls (which are big and have plenty of excellent cinnamon) all the pound cakes, the thumb print cookies and all the other cookies, the whole wheat bread, the cream cheese muffins, the pumpkin bread and pumpkin bars, and the terrific banana nut bread which is huge, moist, and only $7.99. They have many other great cakes and things, as well as small loaves of the pumpkin and banana nut bread. They make gift baskets and ship them too. They have two other locations: Signal Mtn. and Hixson. All have great employees and the same great items. Please note: They close at 2 PM on Saturday. The Trip Advisor review form seems to think this is a restaurant; however, it is a bakery without any place to sit and eat.

The Village Bakery – Menu with Prices – 6202 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville

The best local places are those that are tucked back into little holes in the wall, like the Village Bakery. If you don’t know that it’s next to the big ice cream cone (belonging to another shop) on Chapman Highway, you’ll miss is. And you’ll be missing the best goodies in Knoxville. They always have a terrific assortment of original cookies and cakes, including the thumbprint cookies. Their cakes are amazing and the roses are butter cream. Everything in the store is awesome. And the people who work there are super nice and patiently answer questions. We picked out 2 dozen cookies, 2 petit fours, and a sampling of other cookies and our bill was less than $14.

Palace Coffee Company Menu with Prices 817 S Polk St #2, Amarillo

This roast is pretty good, gosh, I think I can even taste the honeycomb tasting notes. You can serve lite to medium roast all you want but don’t suggest I like coffee that tastes like an ashtray because I prefer dark roast. The coffee taste is ok but overall it is weak like a blonde roast. Ruta Maya in Austin makes great coffee. Their medium roast I don’t prefer but many people do. I get that the coffee perfectionists don’t want to burn the bean but you don’t have to argue the point. As purists, we at Palace Coffee prefer that you drink the coffee that we feel you should like best. And what you will like best is weak with hints of huckleberry.

Lock & Dam Dog Shop – Menu with Prices – 7331 Butler St, Pittsburgh

We came here on a Sunday because it was so freaking hot that we needed ice cream stat. The Lock and Dam had a sign out that said ice cream only which was fine since all that we wanted was ice cream. So my review really has nothing to do with anything else other than their ice cream. The first thing that I will say is that the staff was pretty quick at getting people their orders. There was a slight line when we got there and we got served very fast compared to some other ice cream places that I’ve been to. The Lock and Dam now has the option for an orange twist along with their vanilla, chocolate, and chocolate twist cones. They also have concrete’s which are blizzard like ice cream desserts sundaes and other ice cream choices. I was at first looking at the vanilla twist with some nut toppings but got swayed into getting the orange and vanilla twist. I will have to stay that their sizes are pretty large. Even when you get a medium it looks like a large, it feels like a large, and part of it is still in my freezer because the medium was a large for me. My partner thought that the orange and vanilla twist tasted exactly like a push-up. But I thought that both the flavors kind of tasted like vanilla. The orange didn’t have that orange twist punch that I am used to. The orange flavor was just a little too faint for me. But the vanilla was very good. This shop is just down the street from us so we will probably come again. I look forward to just trying the vanilla cone and some of those concrete’s. Reese’s cup is my favorite and I saw that on the menu. I’m going to give this place four stars until I go back to try more things on the menu.

Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt – Menu with Prices – 2300 Edgewood Rd SW, Cedar Rapids

Short Version: Probably one of the best Orange Leaf locations I’ve been to. Employees are efficient, the store is clean, the froyo tastes amazing, and the location is pretty and modern. I’d love to see a bit of outdoor seating (other Orange Leafs occasionally have Adirondack chairs?), but otherwise, I have no complaints. Long Version: I love frozen yogurt. Like, a lot. Orange Leaf isn’t usually my favorite chain, but they have this “coffee” flavor froyo that is literally to die for. Other chains have “Espresso” or “Cappuccino”, but you can’t beat the coffee one here. Like, at all. Nice, neat new location. Looks like it actually is recently built. Single-person men and women’s bathroom at the back of the store. Part of a strip mall with other locations nearby such as Coffeesmiths. No exterior seating. Interior seating includes the Orange Leaf tables and chairs (they’re like regular tables and chairs only really close to the ground?) as well as long, 3-4 person couches. Decent amount of seating that should handle a lot of people. Parking lot is kinda a mess, but that’s part of the fun of being in Cedar Rapids. They’re also doing construction on part of the parking lot, so that doesn’t help. It’s not insanely hard to get into, but it could be easier. Lots of spaces, though, so unless it’s super busy, you shouldn’t have any issue parking. I’ve been to a lot of places, and this Orange Leaf is surprisingly great. The employees were very efficient, and they didn’t hover. Both times when I came in, they came out from behind the counter, offered me sample cups, and after I declined, went back about their business until I was ready to pay. They didn’t stand at the register and make me feel hurried or rushed to finish what I was doing (I hate that). The yogurt itself was great. Very smooth and very creamy. The machines are working really well and dispensing very well, and it shows in the taste. The frozen yogurt machines worked properly and easily, and the toppings bar was clean and well-stocked. Very little inter-mingling of the different types of toppings, and nothing I put on my froyo was stale or stiff feeling. Even the brownie bites I put on were soft and chewy – it was impressive. Definitely a great Orange Leaf location. One of the better Orange Leafs I’ve ever gone to, actually.

Stirred, Not Shaken – Menu with Prices – 3334 18th St, San Francisco

I am not a cookie person. My family members are not cookie people. In fact, we don’t even really eat sweets or desserts. But these cookies are sinfully delicious… which is why my non-cookie family ordered approximately 20 cookies this week from “Stirred, Not Shaken.” The cookies are large, chewy, and soft in the middle. There’s a subtle variation of textures, and when you bite into the cookie you get a nice doughy, hearty bite. The cookie in the picture is ginger molasses. It’s possibly my favorite cookie of all time. It’s got a balanced sweetness with ginger that gives it a little something special (like a bit of kick, but it’s not spicy… know what I mean?). I took a few bites before realizing I should write a review on Yelp — but by then, the damage was done. My brother ordered Oatmeal Walnut and gave rave reviews. He is usually deadpan and avoids superlatives / high praise… but he shelled some out for these cookies. I don’t know what’s going on. tl;dr: fantastic cookies. highly recommend.
