Is there such a thing as ethical capitalism? Not sure about the answer to that question yet, but I do support the mission of this coffee shop: providing job training and employment to refugees. AMBIANCE (5/5) I particularly love the designs on the walls. it’s a good example of how good graphic design can intersect with social impact. It clearly communicates comprehensive information about refugees through compelling visuals. There is a good amount of working space with tables/chairs at various heights, which is a small thing I appreciate a lot. I’m very particular, but I feel my best work self when I’m sitting at a high table for some reason, and these high chairs all have backs to them, which is the one thing I always wish bar stools had. The space is super clean and well-maintained, adding to the inviting atmosphere. It was easy to find seats on a Thursday morning when I came. Good meeting to chat or do work at. COFFEE (4/5) The prices are pretty standard. I paid $3.50 for an Americano, which was decent (a little too watered down for me). They have simple syrup, honey, and metal stirrers (a plus in my book in terms of environmental consciousness). OVERALL I support the mission of creating opportunities for historically marginalized populations and love that it’s done through something that communities nowadays seem to want. This cafe is basically the manifestation of what I dream of for my own community. Would definitely come back here the next time I’m in Berkeley.

Bourbon Coffee – Menu with Prices – 1815 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge

Stopped by here on a cold day to get a latte. I was a little happy and also a little disappointed. Let’s see why! First, the cafe is attached to a university, can be easy to miss if you’re driving by. The ambiance is quite nice. It was a sunny day, even though it was freezing outside, and sun rays were shining on the chairs by the window. Looked so inviting! Many chairs and tables especially if you want to sit and work. And that’s precisely what a lot of people were doing. We wandered around and stood for a good 15 minutes before a couple seats opened up. Went up to the counter to get me a latte. I had a few questions regarding the flavors. Every one of these lattes used artificial flavors, nothing house-made. Sob. So I decided to get the honey cinnamon one (they use actual honey and actual cinnamon, yay). I told them it was for here, but the cashier still picked up a paper-plastic cup. This may seem like a small thing but we’re trying to minimize our trash in all of our actions. So I found it strange that even though I explicitly mentioned it was for here and they have ceramic mugs, I was going to be given coffee in a cup which may as well last for eternity on this planet. Anyway, I’m glad I could request the cashier again that I want it for here in a ceramic mug, please. The latte itself was okay, I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit. Also, not a single smile during this whole encounter, from start to finish. Pro tip: It looks like there is free parking out back but it doesn’t belong to the cafe. However, there is metered parking on the street or a paid parking lot out behind the university.

just add honey tea company Menu with Prices 684 John Wesley Dobbs Ave NE Unit E, Atlanta

Tea lovers check out Just Add Honey. This is the second location and its right off the Eastside beltline right next to Ladybird, perfect spot. It’s an absolutely charming space, you feel like you’re entering someone’s home. Everyone working was very helpful and pleasant. There are so many places for you to sit while you’re waiting for your order or if you decide to enjoy your beverage inside. Prices are very affordable, nice variety of seasonal beverages and house specialties. You have a choice of non dairy milk and sweeteners, including simple syrup. I ordered the lavender honey latte with almond milk. It was good with lots of lavender flavor, I was surprised that I had to add extra honey though. I couldn’t really taste the honey the first time. I would also like to recommend that be very patient, I’m not sure why but we had what seemed like a long wait for 3 orders. We enjoyed the atmosphere so we didn’t mind and the employee also checked in on us. I probably wouldn’t get the same drink if I was in a rush. While you’re waiting look around the shop, they have lots of cool items and baked goods. I love the t-shirt with a picture of a tea pot with the words, pot head….. too funny.

Sip of Hope Coffee Bar – Menu with Prices – 3039 W Fullerton Ave, Chicago

I absolutely love this coffee shop. First, the mission: all of their proceeds go to suicide prevention and mental health research. They are affiliated with Hope for the Day, an organization whose motto is “It’s OK to not be OK,” which is wonderful. I am absolutely on board with any place that is supporting making mental health a visible issue worth talking about. Second: the coffee. Everything here is delicious. They have their own coffee and they serve Dark Matter. They’ve got iced, hot, espresso, lattes, specialty teas, etc. – everything you need coffee-wise. In the warmer months, they’ll make all of their hot teas iced and they are really delicious. There’s a lot of space, free wifi, and they encourage using the space for work and gatherings. I’ve enjoyed working here on my own and with others and it’s always relatively quiet and well-lit. There’s plenty of parking on Fullerton (mostly free!) and it’s right across from the library so you can hit that up. I love this place and I’m happy to keep coming back to support everything they’re doing to prevent suicide and make depression and other mental health issues visible and normal.

Coffee Code – Menu with Prices – 1030 Rosecrans Ave, Fullerton

Iced hazelnut coffee anyone? This is the first time I’ve tried hazelnut coffee with ACTUAL coffee ice cubes in it. I absolutely LOVE this place. Like everything about it is awesome, from the atmosphere to the amazing coffee. To be frank, not many coffee shops open super early in the morning. However, Coffee Code has my back because they open at 6 AM everyday (except for Sundays). Other coffee shops normally open at 7 or 8 AM. Due to this, I end up going late to school. Thank God for Coffee Code and their opening hours, as well as phone call orders. One thing forsure is that the iced hazelnut latte is specifically the only item I order because hazelnut latte is just BOMB. What makes Coffee Code noticeable and very likable is that they also provide a great pastry selection, along with super friendly and amazing service! My two favorite baristas (Jurie and Elizabeth) are really warm and inviting, and willing to bring the best customer service to you. It’s refreshing to have friendly baristas in a hipster place when that is not always the norm. Additionally, I really love the combination of the vibe, the amazing drinks, and how inviting this space feels. The interior is also bright and modern space with several seating options including outlets for those hardworking students LOL. Overall, it is definitely a great place to work, read, chat. Thank you Coffee Code for the days I needed (still do) iced hazelnut latte. You guys really know how to bring delight to customers. I would say this makes one of my favorite coffee shops in Fullerton ?

Cocoa Cinnamon – Menu with Prices – 420 W Geer St, Durham

This is hands down the best coffee shop in Durham! Not only does it have great coffee, but it’s over all a great local business that I’m so happy to be supporting. The coffee menu has your typical fare- lattes, iced coffee, espresso. However, they also have some equally unique and tasty drinks like their shipping chocolates. My usual go to is their iced coffee, and I find that the coffee is always high quality. It never tastes bitter or watered down! In addition to coffee, this location sells pastries from local bakeries. The selection is always good and they even have a section of discounted pastries from the day before. This location has a small parking lot, including a few spots reserved for coffee pick up. The shop itself is small, but they have definitely optimized the seating with sofas, chairs, and tables. Heads up-this is a place where it’s likely you’ll be sharing a table with strangers. The vibe is quaint and cozy. It’s the perfect place to sit and relax for a little bit or work on the free wifi!

Wells Coffee Company – Menu with Prices – 737 NE 2nd Ave, Fort Lauderdale

I wish I were just reviewing the coffee, because this place would get 5 stars! Like every other reviewer on here, I got the horchata cold brew. It was as good as everyone says! Not the strongest cup of joe I’ve ever had, but tasty nonetheless. The not-so-satisfactory part for me was simply the layout of this place. It is a huge, open room with barely-ample seating for a dozen people. They could easily fit another dozen seats in the place without compromising the open feel. More if they really wanted to cram people in. I’m glad they weren’t cramming, but they still could use more seating. The next problem was that in the entire place, there are only two seats located near an outlet. So if you’re coming here to work on any device that might need charging, you better arrive at opening to get one of those two seats, because people will fight for them! I unfortunately did not get one of those seats and was therefore unable to work on my broken laptop. It just seemed weird to me that for a coffee shop kind of designed for people to hang out for a few hours, it wasn’t designed to support its customers. Lastly, parking is a joke. I parked a few blocks away and walked, which wasn’t an issue for me but might be for others. Overall, I would come back for the coffee, but would maybe choose another place if I wanted to spread out and stay a while.

Bitty & Beau’s Coffee – Menu with Prices – 4949 New Centre Dr, Wilmington

This is the cutest local chain coffee shop there ever was! I am in love with a good coffee, but a good coffee with a mission behind it? Sign. Me. Up. Not only is the vibe exactly what I want in a coffee shop, it’s got good coffee. Bonus! This one is a little hard to find because you look like you’re going to go and buy a Cadillac at first then you realize the coffee shop is next door. Once you figure out you don’t need to purchase a car you can breathe easy and get your heart pumping on caffeine. This space is so clean, bright, and white. I want to sit on my computer and work all day in there. The employees are the nicest and so upbeat. I ordered a chocolate muffin and a brown sugar cinnamon iced latte with almond milk (no soy). The coffee was good – too sweet for my taste but the name sounds sweet so I get what I asked for. I am interested in buying some coffee beans once I’m ready for more and can’t wait to brew it in the pour over!

Stauf?s Coffee – Menu with Prices – 1334 Neil Ave, Columbus

I’m a big lover of Stauf’s coffee and I’m glad they decided to open up a location in my neighborhood. When I finally got word that they were opening, I made sure to schedule a coworking day so I could check it out with friends. We arrived around 8AM on a week day and the place was already filling up. Word definitely got around and the neighborhood was excited to check out the new space. This new space is actually a really old space, an old church to be exact. They renovated the building and added their own flare to it. Very cool! The service and coffee was awesome, despite my bagel order being incorrect. Everyone working that morning was jazzed to share the space with new customers. The energy was contagious and I loved every bit of it. This is something I can say runs true at every location of Stauf’s. They do a great job at hiring personable folks and their coffee is consistently delicious. The few things that urked me, which resulted in this review being a 4 star instead of a five, was the seating and the lighting. Half the seating was derived from old church pews. While this is a really neat way to show off the history of the space, they were difficult to sit in and rather uncomfortable. I’m kinda short and these seats dip low, which made the tables too high to work out of, plus they are really hard. I ended up moving to a larger high-top table, which wasn’t very sturdy and an awkward size. It was meant for four people but really only fit two along with their laptops, coffee, and breakfast. The lighting on the other hand was dark and the fixtures were round. They caused glares on everything and bothered my eyes. This was a fabulous location for Stauf’s to open up another coffee shop and I’ll definitely be back to grab a cup of joe and get some work done. Other perks? Great patio, gender neutral bathrooms, and I noticed a wheelchair elevator towards the back of the building. Love that they made this building accessible to all. Way to go the extra mile for the community!

1865 Coffee – Menu with Prices – 40 E University Dr, Tempe

I wish I had known this was a Christian coffee shop before deciding to check it out. I would have saved myself some time and gone elsewhere. It’s not just the pro-life literature and scripture on the wall that has me rolling my eyes. There is terrible Christian rock music playing. And probably the worst thing of all is the partnership with the Salvation Army. I wish I had read the 5-star reviews that mentioned this. Perhaps the reviewers are not familiar with the controversies surrounding the Salvation Army, which is a decidedly right-wing organization that is more concerned with “saving souls” than actually helping the needy. (Look up “12 Reasons to Reject the Salvation Army”). Perhaps these reviewers are conservatives who support the mission of the Salvation Army. To each his own, I guess. I certainly won’t be back. The coffee I ordered is watered down and a little too sweet. That might be my fault for ordering something I usually don’t order. Also, they don’t seem to carry any pastries which is kind of a bummer. They only have bagels(?) The reason I am giving this place 2 stars instead of 1 is because I like that you can pay $1 to leave a coffee sleeve so that someone in need can get a free coffee. In the half hour I’ve been here I’ve seen 3 people come in to make use of this program. The barista was also very friendly, as I imagine most working at a Christian coffee shop would be.

Levengoods of Lancaster – Menu with Prices – 104 W King St, Lancaster

I really hate giving a place a bad review, but man, these ciders were rough. I prefer cider over any other alcoholic beverage. I also prefer dry ciders over sweet ciders. We tried 4 of the 8 ciders and I guess, if you twisted my arm, I would say the hopped one was okay. The dry cider tasted like nothing – watered down with no flavor at all. We also had the original and the barrel aged and they tasted like they were rushed, just to get something to serve. I would definitely recommend more research on how to make ciders. As far as food goes, almost everything was crossed out on the list except for 2 items, lettuce wraps and a pretzel. We decided to wait to go somewhere else to eat. The atmosphere would have been okay if the community center next door wasn’t having a party. Their club music was so loud!! They definitely need better insulation. Other than that, they had a long bar with chairs, a high top table and some comfy chairs closer to the door. Hopefully they make some improvements!

Tierra Mia Coffee Menu with Prices 201 N State College Blvd, Anaheim

Literally around the corner from where I live, Tierra Mia is convenient for coffee, tea, pastries, study or work. Ever since it’s debut here in Anaheim, it manages to have a steady flow of customers. It’s hard to believe a Dairy Queen once sat here not too long ago. Tierra Mia has a beautiful open seating layout. Stools, chairs and wooden tables align the windows, and then there are larger wooden tables in the middle of the space, and a set of booth-like seats closer to the counter. Another plus is, that they have free wi-fi (find the password at the front counter) and clean restrooms! The baristas/workers are also polite and I have yet to catch any of them twiddling their thumbs – hats off to them for staying busy while at work! Drinks to choose from here are many. I have had their chai tea, vanilla and honey vanilla lattes, a caramelo frappe, green iced tea, mojito mint and strawberry mojito tea lemonades. I enjoyed all beverages mentioned probably because they’re all different. I ordered a cheese roll one time and it reminded me of 2 day old Porto’s (take that as you will), maybe I should try a different pastry? Whether you’re driving through or stopping in to hang out, you should find that Tierra Mia has some kind of beverage to satisfy your thirst. I know every time I’ve been here, I always do.

L’Or en Grain – Boutique de Café – Menu with Prices – 751 Rue Rachel E, Montréal

Hands down probably the best coffee I’ve ever heard. A very cute independent coffee shop that has the best beans from South America and Canada and other places. They have a dedicated area for Canadian coffee and it’s labelled from which city it’s from. They have all kinds of tools, machines and coffee makers available at your disposal. I walked around to see what they were specific to. There’s beautiful posters and paintings decorated. Unfortunately they have 2 very very small tables in such a spacious cafe. You can sit on the high chairs at the register. However, it would be nice if they incorporated more sitting space available. The barista explained the different coffees available and why they are different. Upon his recommendation I ordered the chocolate pour-over. It was excellent! Very strong coffee, to the point I was up way past midnight! I added milk, no sugar and it was perfect. I tried my friends fruit coffee pour over and I didn’t like it, nor did they. I finished my fairly large mug, whereas they couldn’t. It was nice to watch the process of the coffee being made. Really enjoyed it. Again, not enough chairs to sit and enjoy the coffee which is primarily why it loses a star.
