Summary: A new edition of a graduate-level machine learning textbook that focuses on the analysis and theory of algorithms. This book is a general introduction to machine learning that can serve as a textbook for graduate students and a reference for researchers. It covers fundamental modern topics in machine learning while providing the theoretical basis and conceptual tools needed for the discussion and justification of algorithms. It also describes several key aspects of the application of these algorithms. The authors aim to present novel theoretical tools and concepts while giving concise proofs even for relatively advanced topics. Foundations of Machine Learning is unique in its focus on the analysis and theory of algorithms. The first four chapters lay the theoretical foundation for what follows; subsequent chapters are mostly self-contained. Topics covered include the Probably Approximately Correct (PAC) learning framework; generalization bounds based on Rademacher complexity and VC-dimension; Support Vector Machines (SVMs); kernel methods; boosting; on-line learning; multi-class classification; ranking; regression; algorithmic stability; dimensionality reduction; learning automata and languages; and reinforcement learning. Each chapter ends with a set of exercises. Appendixes provide additional material including concise probability review. This second edition offers three new chapters, on model selection, maximum entropy models, and conditional entropy models. New material in the appendixes includes a major section on Fenchel duality, expanded coverage of concentration inequalities, and an entirely new entry on information theory. More than half of the exercises are new to this edition. show more

This book covers all essential aspects of MATLAB presented within an easy-to-follow “learn while doing” tutorial format. “Mass Media in a Changing World” introduces students to the world of media through a unique structure that makes the material easily intelligible and meaningful to their lives. The title features domain analysis for object identification; dynamic analysis and design; implementation; method creation and the framework of view alignment techniques; and, a case study. This edition retains the hallmark features that have been praised by faculty and students–a strong emphasis on ethical communication and cultural diversity, discussions of evolving communication technologies, and self-assessment tools–while incorporating important updates and ground-breaking digital teaching and learning tools to help students better connect to the course material and apply it to real world business situations. For undergraduate courses in Adjustment/Personal Growth, Human Relations, General Psychology, Service Learning Courses and Interpersonal Communication. For one- and two-semester Operating Systems courses (in the most recent ACM/IEEE curriculum) that universities offer to juniors, seniors and graduate Computer Science students. The text goes beyond the standard coverage in operating systems courses with key chapters on multiprocessing, networking, distributed systems, performance, and security. Students told us they wanted more portable texts with innovative visual appeal and content that is designed according to the way they learn. The text also provides an overview of the history of ballet and introduces students to the world of ballet. Foundations of Machine Learning by Mehryar Mohri This text has an easy-to-follow problem-solving approach, vivid illustrations, and engaging applications including timely “Chemistry at the Crime Scene” applications with “For Further Understanding” questions that follow to help the students think through what they just read. A more modern, visual text and digital learning package fits with today’s students and the way they learn. The book’s building block approach introduces concepts with simple examples and then gradually introduces complexity, allowing students to easily keep pace with the material. For introductory and intermediate courses in computer forensics, digital investigations, or computer crime investigation By applying information systems, computer security, and criminal justice principles and practices to crime investigations and other legal actions, this text teaches students how to use forensically-sound methodologies and software to acquire admissible electronic evidence (e-evidence) with coverage of computer and email forensics, cell phone and IM forensics, and PDA and Blackberry forensics. Coverage woven through every chapter includes material for all age groups in early childhood (infants and toddlers through 3rd grade), assessing the environment, meeting the needs of ALL learners, the teacher’s role in facilitating learning in the various environments, and ways to address each curricular area outdoors. Emphasis is given to dealing with customer service problems and how to handle conflicts and stress. It is written by students who aced the USMLE and reviewed by top faculty. – NEW – Rewritten chapter on numerical optimization – Provides a presentation that flows more smoothly. The text is designed to help students understand how to effectively adjust, adapt, and navigate the changing business landscape they will face on a day-to-day basis.
