Summary: A comprehensive political and design theory of planetary-scale computation proposing that The Stack-an accidental megastructure-is both a technological apparatus and a model for a new geopolitical architecture. What has planetary-scale computation done to our geopolitical realities? It takes different forms at different scales-from energy and mineral sourcing and subterranean cloud infrastructure to urban software and massive universal addressing systems; from interfaces drawn by the augmentation of the hand and eye to users identified by self-quantification and the arrival of legions of sensors, algorithms, and robots. Together, how do these distort and deform modern political geographies and produce new territories in their own image? In The Stack, Benjamin Bratton proposes that these different genres of computation-smart grids, cloud platforms, mobile apps, smart cities, the Internet of Things, automation-can be seen not as so many species evolving on their own, but as forming a coherent whole: an accidental megastructure called The Stack that is both a computational apparatus and a new governing architecture. We are inside The Stack and it is inside of us. In an account that is both theoretical and technical, drawing on political philosophy, architectural theory, and software studies, Bratton explores six layers of The Stack: Earth, Cloud, City, Address, Interface, User. Each is mapped on its own terms and understood as a component within the larger whole built from hard and soft systems intermingling-not only computational forms but also social, human, and physical forces. This model, informed by the logic of the multilayered structure of protocol “stacks,” in which network technologies operate within a modular and vertical order, offers a comprehensive image of our emerging infrastructure and a platform for its ongoing reinvention. The Stack is an interdisciplinary design brief for a new geopolitics that works with and for planetary-scale computation. Interweaving the continental, urban, and perceptual scales, it shows how we can better build, dwell within, communicate with, and govern our worlds. thestack.org show more

Practical and easy-to-read, with a perfect balance of principle and practice, the text provides extensive coverage of important topics that reflect the rapid, on-going changes continuously reshaping the electronic packaging industry and the specialized skills that go with them. Molecular Pathology: The Molecular Basis of Human Disease provides a current and comprehensive view of the molecular basis and mechanisms of human disease. Every step of the way, students learn new things, building on what they already know. The Fourth Edition features stronger coverage of American religion and a reinforced pedagogical program aimed at fostering effective reading and study skills. This creates a bridge to subsequent courses in advanced data structures and algorithms. Complete system requirements to use Connect can be found here: http: //www.mheducation.com/highered/platforms/connect/training-support-students.html “English Skills with Readings” features John Langan’s trademark crystal-clear explanations, along with his range of motivating activities and writing assignments that reinforce the four bases of effective writing: unity, support, coherence, and sentence skills. The focus is on critical areas paralegals deal with daily: what law is and how to find it, what role the Internet plays in legal research, how to incorporate legal research into writing, and how to create an array of legal documents. The Stack : On Software and Sovereignty by Benjamin H. Bratton “Shifting the Center: Understanding Contemporary Families” explores the issues and diversity of contemporary families, presenting balanced coverage of racial and ethnic variation and discussing a wide variety of family arrangements and processes. There are practical strategies suggested in the text for elementary and secondary students and for students from a variety of language backgrounds. Each component of the MAS experience is designed to spark curiosity and inspire critical thinking, from its unique magazine format to its thought-provoking readings and stunning short film collection. The visuals and graphics throughout the textbook engage students’ attention and illustrate key concepts and processes. The authors believe in the development of practitioners who learn through examining controversy, staying abreast of current research, and challenging their own thinking. The book develops the basic concepts and quantitative tools in the first six chapters, which comprise the principles. A chronological survey of the role and experience of women in American history, Women and the Making of America examines the issue of power in women’s lives and women’s history.
