Summary: How a team of researchers, led by the author, discovered our home galaxy’s location in the universe. You are here: on Earth, which is part of the solar system, which is in the Milky Way galaxy, which itself is within the extragalactic supercluster Laniakea. And how can we pinpoint our location so precisely? For twenty years, astrophysicist Helene Courtois surfed the cosmos with international teams of researchers, working to map our local universe. In this book, Courtois describes this quest and the discovery of our home supercluster. Courtois explains that Laniakea (which means “immense heaven” in Hawaiian) is the largest galaxy structure known to which we belong; it is huge, almost too large to comprehend-about five hundred million light-years in diameter. It contains about 100,000 large galaxies like our own, and a million smaller ones. Writing accessibly for nonspecialists, Courtois describes the visualization and analysis that allowed her team to map such large structures of the universe. She highlights the work of individual researchers, including portraits of several exceptional women astrophysicists-presenting another side of astronomy. Key ideas are highlighted in text insets; illustrations accompany the main text. The French edition of this book was named the Best Astronomy Book of 2017 by the astronomy magazine Ciel et espace. For this MIT Press English-language edition, Courtois has added descriptions of discoveries made after Laniakea: the cosmic velocity web and the Dipole and Cold Spot repellers. An engaging account of one of the most important discoveries in astrophysics in recent years, her story is a tribute to teamwork and international collaboration. show more

Margarita Madrigal’s books have been used by thousands of students around the world. Knowing that students do not often read the text and have poor study skills, “Santrock Essentials” introduces an adaptive diagnostic that helps students know what they know and what they don’t know to become more efficient and effective learners. It does this by focusing on all elements of a landfill from design to completion. With this top-down approach, its thorough treatment of the topic, and a host of pedagogical features, this new networking book offers the market something it hasn’t had for many years – a well-crafted, modern text that places the student at the center of the learning experience. Critical thinking questions are also included at the end of each case, to further tie in this component. A supplement for courses dealing with police and police management in law enforcement and criminal justice programs in two and four year colleges and police academies. Connect is the only integrated learning system that empowers students by continuously adapting to deliver precisely what they need, when they need it, and how they need it, so that your class time is more engaging and effective.” This book is of interest to researchers in psychology, education, and business, as well as to a wider audience interested in promoting optimal motivation and performance. Finding our Place in the Universe : How We Discovered Laniakea-the Milky Way’s Home by Helene Courtois In the ever-changing health care environment, nurses have never needed this information more. Items such as Math Anxiety boxes, Check Yourself exercises, and Activities represent this approach and the underlying philosophy of mastering math through practice. This title was developed to allow instructors the maximum flexibility to teach this material in a manner that fits their personal style. The book is intended for a senior/graduate level course in probability and is aimed at students in electrical engineering, math, and physics departments. It emphasizes preparation for a diversity of careers, addressing areas such as teaching, coaching, exercise leadership, athletic and personal training, sport management, and sport media. The second half of the text is suitable for an Applied Thermodynamics course in mechanical engineering programs. KEY BENEFIT This book seeks to help students understand the dynamic and exciting environment of human resources (HR) management and the complex decisions that all managers must make when managing employees. Designed to demystify the Motorola 68000 microprocessor-its hardware and software-this text leads students on an in-depth, hands-on exploration of more than 75 different applications and then guides them through the construction and programming of their own working single-board 68000 system.
