Summary: Divorce rates are at an all-time high. But without a theoretical understanding of the processes related to marital stability and dissolution, it is difficult to design and evaluate new marriage interventions. The Mathematics of Marriage provides the foundation for a scientific theory of marital relations. The book does not rely on metaphors, but develops and applies a mathematical model using difference equations. The work is the fulfillment of the goal to build a mathematical framework for the general system theory of families first suggested by Ludwig Von Bertalanffy in the 1960s.The book also presents a complete introduction to the mathematics involved in theory building and testing, and details the development of experiments and models. In one “marriage experiment,” for example, the authors explored the effects of lowering or raising a couple’s heart rates. Armed with their mathematical model, they were able to do real experiments to determine which processes were affected by their interventions. Applying ideas such as phase space, null clines, influence functions, inertia, and uninfluenced and influenced stable steady states (attractors), the authors show how other researchers can use the methods to weigh their own data with positive and negative weights. While the focus is on modeling marriage, the techniques can be applied to other types of psychological phenomena as well. show more

This book helps readers understand the principles, applications, and limitations of a cutting-edge material. The classic organization of the text has been preserved, as is its successful pedagogical features: chapter roadmaps, preview boxes, design boxes and summary section. This chapter discusses managers as real people with their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and problems and this theme is carried thru the remaining chapters. The book offers extra practice on topics such as rectilinear motion, curvilinear motion, rectangular components, tangential and normal components, and radial and transverse components. A collection of cartoons satirizes various aspects of conventional society and the counter-culture from the presidency to the secret life of plants Whether students collaborate in a physical classroom or in Connect Spanish, they are provided with opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations and collaborative task-based activities. This resource provides in-depth coverage of major scientific and technological developments. Although the primary focus is on the U.S., considerable material on aging worldwide is included. By combining the theoretical with the practical through the integration of descriptive outlines, readings, and numerous pedagogical aids, this book strikes an educationally productive balance between accessibility and academic rigor. The Mathematics of Marriage : Dynamic Nonlinear Models by John M. Gottman It features new and revised end-of-chapter exercises, stronger coverage of loops and vectorizing, and more engineering applications to help the reader learn this software tool in context. The book includes actual procedures, real-world decisions, and many examples and case studies to help you understand the occurrence and movement of groundwater in a variety of geologic settings. Designed for one-semester courses in introductory biology, for non-major biology students, this issues-based, inquiry-driven biology text provides students with the ability and desire to take an active and scholarly interest in the science issues they will regularly face in college. The distinguishing mark of the 19th edition is its enriched and enlivened presentation of the material in each of the 12 chapters, providing an as up-to-date and engrossing discussion of the core concepts and analytical tools as you will find anywhere. The text’s careful organization ensures maximum teaching flexibility that allows the chapters to work together to be covered in sequence or to stand alone. The new edition includes substantially expanded material on diversity and culture, adolescents’ and emerging adults’ health and well-being, including numerous recommendations for improving the lives of adolescents, and expanded emphasis on the positive aspects of adolescent development.
