Summary: Why the troll problem is actually a culture problem: how online trolling fits comfortably within today’s media landscape. Internet trolls live to upset as many people as possible, using all the technical and psychological tools at their disposal. They gleefully whip the media into a frenzy over a fake teen drug crisis; they post offensive messages on Facebook memorial pages, traumatizing grief-stricken friends and family; they use unabashedly racist language and images. They take pleasure in ruining a complete stranger’s day and find amusement in their victim’s anguish. In short, trolling is the obstacle to a kinder, gentler Internet. To quote a famous Internet meme, trolling is why we can’t have nice things online. Or at least that’s what we have been led to believe. In this provocative book, Whitney Phillips argues that trolling, widely condemned as obscene and deviant, actually fits comfortably within the contemporary media landscape. Trolling may be obscene, but, Phillips argues, it isn’t all that deviant. Trolls’ actions are born of and fueled by culturally sanctioned impulses-which are just as damaging as the trolls’ most disruptive behaviors. Phillips describes, for example, the relationship between trolling and sensationalist corporate media-pointing out that for trolls, exploitation is a leisure activity; for media, it’s a business strategy. She shows how trolls, “the grimacing poster children for a socially networked world,” align with social media. And she documents how trolls, in addition to parroting media tropes, also offer a grotesque pantomime of dominant cultural tropes, including gendered notions of dominance and success and an ideology of entitlement. We don’t just have a trolling problem, Phillips argues; we have a culture problem. This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things isn’t only about trolls; it’s about a culture in which trolls thrive. show more

A wide array of tables that summarize the methods of clinical assessment, anti-infective agent doses, and drug toxicities–facts that do not require memorization, but do need to be referred to when caring for patients–facilitate this condensed learning schedule. Only after the study of matter and the atom will students have sufficient background to fully engage in topics such as stoichiometry, kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics. The seventh edition of “White’s Fluid Mechanics” offers students a clear and comprehensive presentation of the material that demonstrates the progression from physical concepts to engineering applications and helps students quickly see the practical importance of fluid mechanics fundamentals. Divided into units, it begins with a historical sketch of the industry, offers a separate chapter on formula yields and baking math, and ends with interesting interviews and industry profiles. Ideal for students with a general interest in art, it avoids the typical encyclopedic approach of surveys in favor of examining selected but highly representative works in greater depth and from an enlarged spectrum of critical discourse. (“College Physics” takes an integrated approach to forces and kinematics, introducing forces and interweaving kinematics.) David Spiceland, Wayne Thomas and Don Herrmann have developed a unique text based on over 50 collective years of experience in the classroom. “Nutrition for Health, Fitness & Sport,” now in its tenth edition, provides the reader with thorough coverage of the role nutrition plays in enhancing one’s health, fitness, and sport performance. This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things : Mapping the Relationship between Online Trolling and Mainstream Culture by Whitney Phillips Having taught Drawing I for over a decade years, Sandy Brooke wrote this book to help students better understand the process, concepts, and techniques of drawing. For courses in Finite Element Analysis, offered in departments of Mechanical or Civil and Environmental Engineering. Exploring Our World is a middle school program co-authored by National Geographic. The book also serves as a reference for numerical methods in engineering.Special Features: *In derivations and developments, steps needed for continuity of understanding have been included to aid the reader at the introductory level. Returning to the classroom after nine years as an academic Dean, she was aware of the student demographic changes, but unprepared for the pedagogical implications of those changes. The material emphasizes concepts over applications and exposes students to real issues that they will encounter in the workplace. Like the 19th edition, Microeconomics: Brief Edition, 2e continues to be innovative while teaching students in a clear, unbiased way. This new edition updates a great A&P classic while offering greater efficiencies to the user. For each energy system, the authors provide equations and problems to help practitioners quantify the performance of the technology and better understand its potential.
