Summary: A new approach to safety, based on systems thinking, that is more effective, less costly, and easier to use than current techniques. Engineering has experienced a technological revolution, but the basic engineering techniques applied in safety and reliability engineering, created in a simpler, analog world, have changed very little over the years. In this groundbreaking book, Nancy Leveson proposes a new approach to safety-more suited to today’s complex, sociotechnical, software-intensive world-based on modern systems thinking and systems theory. Revisiting and updating ideas pioneered by 1950s aerospace engineers in their System Safety concept, and testing her new model extensively on real-world examples, Leveson has created a new approach to safety that is more effective, less expensive, and easier to use than current techniques. Arguing that traditional models of causality are inadequate, Leveson presents a new, extended model of causation (Systems-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes, or STAMP), then shows how the new model can be used to create techniques for system safety engineering, including accident analysis, hazard analysis, system design, safety in operations, and management of safety-critical systems. She applies the new techniques to real-world events including the friendly-fire loss of a U.S. Blackhawk helicopter in the first Gulf War; the Vioxx recall; the U.S. Navy SUBSAFE program; and the bacterial contamination of a public water supply in a Canadian town. Leveson’s approach is relevant even beyond safety engineering, offering techniques for “reengineering” any large sociotechnical system to improve safety and manage risk. show more

This one-of-a-kind test prep guide helps you to: get to know material on course exams and the USMLE Step 1; practice with 500 clinically-oriented multiple-choice questions; review key facts for exam success; and build confidence, skills, and knowledge. Appreciating Anthropology boxes are also new to the text and focus on the value and usefulness of anthropological research and approaches. Student-friendly Study Tips, Clinical View boxes, and progressive question sets motivate students to internalize and apply what they’ve learned. * Good and solid introduction to probability theory and stochastic processes * Logically organized; writing is presented in a clear manner * Choice of topics is comprehensive within the area of probability * Ample homework problems are organized into chapter sections The Analysis of Musical Form emphasizes aural comprehension, incorporates recent analytic methodologies, and addresses musical form as both process and design. The new, 12th edition is the latest and most exciting revision of a respected introductory biology text written by authors who know how to reach students through engaging writing, interesting issues and applications, and accessible level. For courses in the History and/or Philosophy of Science; also appropriate for courses in the History of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. This text continues to address the importance of Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) in the field of Advertising and how it impacts advertising strategy through featured examples of IMC campaigns. More than 40 million students have trusted “Schaum’s” to help them succeed in the classroom and on exams. Engineering a Safer World : Systems Thinking Applied to Safety by Nancy G. Leveson The story must weave in tools to make the reader remember important events and understand their impact. This decision-simplifying resource looks at both the major and emerging nondestructive evaluation methods, including visual testing, penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing, radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, eddy current testing, thermal infrared testing, and acoustic emission testing. The strength of this text is that it gives the student a realistic understanding of how the process of filmmaking works, along with a greater sense of the informed and skillful choices that its artists and technicians make in creating their art. LearnSmart then provides an optimal learning path for each student, so that they spend less time in areas they already know and more time in areas they don’t. Freivalds addresses the increasing global competition and the fact that every industry, business, and service organization is restructuring itself to operate more effectively. * Boxed features describing best practices for teaching (1) the major components of reading, (2) English language learners and (3) struggling readers-Best practices give the reader guidance for improving classroom practices specifically tailored to teaching each component, English learners and struggling readers. Principles of Microeconomics, fifth edition, is thoroughly updated with examples that connect to current events such as the financial crisis of 2008 and Great Recession of 2007-2009 as well as other topics commonly discussed in the media. The Student’s Solution Manual contains comprehensive, worked-out solutions for all odd-numbered problems in the text, with the exception of the checkup section for which solutions to all problems are provided. Coverage is based on the authors’ belief that effective management strategies for any age or ability level must begin with an instructional analysis of the problem and be followed with a solution grounded in instructional principles and built on solid research. It also considers all major life transitions including retirement, widowhood, grandparenting, and changes in living arrangements.
