Summary: An accessible, concise primer on the neurological trait of synesthesia-vividly felt sensory couplings-by a founder of the field. One in twenty-three people carry the genes for the synesthesia. Not a disorder but a neurological trait-like perfect pitch-synesthesia creates vividly felt cross-sensory couplings. A synesthete might hear a voice and at the same time see it as a color or shape, taste its distinctive flavor, or feel it as a physical touch. In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Richard Cytowic, the expert who returned synesthesia to mainstream science after decades of oblivion, offers a concise, accessible primer on this fascinating human experience. Cytowic explains that synesthesia’s most frequent manifestation is seeing days of the week as colored, followed by sensing letters, numerals, and punctuation marks in different hues even when printed in black. Other manifestations include tasting food in shapes, seeing music in moving colors, and mapping numbers and other sequences spatially. One synesthete declares, “Chocolate smells pink and sparkly”; another invents a dish (chicken, vanilla ice cream, and orange juice concentrate) that tastes intensely blue. Cytowic, who in the 1980s revived scientific interest in synesthesia, sees it now understood as a spectrum, an umbrella term that covers five clusters of outwardly felt couplings that can occur via several pathways. Yet synesthetic or not, each brain uniquely filters what it perceives. Cytowic reminds us that each individual’s perspective on the world is thoroughly subjective. show more

Students told us they wanted more portable texts with innovative visual appeal and content that is designed according to the way they learn. – Section-end summaries enable students to review important concepts, and their understanding of them, in each section before moving on. This text presents the study of film in an innovative new structure, one that emphasizes the interplay of three frequently conflicting elements: Art, Technology, and Business. For developmental courses in reading and writing; and for any level courses in Humanities, Literature, African-American Literature, and African-American Studies. This is a must-have supplement for pre-med, nursing, and medical science students, and anyone else wanting to improve their understanding of microbiology Utilising a unique self-teaching approach, the authors follow the syllabus of the leading textbooks and translate complex terms and concepts into an easy-to-read and understand format. The hallmark feature of this classic text is its focus on the student – it is written so that students may teach the science of circuit analysis to themselves. Separate Study Guides are available for the macro and micro paperback editions of the text. Julia uses her background of teaching hundreds of general chemistry students per year and creates content to offer more detailed explanation on areas where she knows they have problems. Synesthesia by Richard E. Cytowic “Essentials of Marketing” teaches students analytical abilities and how-to-do-it skills that prepare them for success. How does Avanti! with Connect and LearnSmart support the needs of Italian instructors and students? Communicative Competence: One of the major challenges of any introductory language course is to give students ample exposure to the language and sufficient opportunity for speaking practice to inspire them to communicate with confidence. The book is intended for the engineer building and developing hydraulic systems to help analyze, design, control, and maintain hydrostatic pumps and motors. Nutrition in the Prevention and Treatment of Disease, Third Edition is a comprehensive clinical nutrition textbook that integrates food issues with nutrition to provide a unique perspective to disease prevention/control. The students are guided through assignments such as using frequency distributions, performing the t test, using the one-way ANOVA procedure, computing a correlation, and computing chi-square function. Probability is presented in a very clear way in this text: through interesting and instructive examples and exercises that motivate the theory, definitions, theorems, and methodology. The integrated coverage of design principles and the wide variety of exercises based on current heat and mass transfer technologies encourages students to think like engineers, better preparing them for the engineering workplace. Greater emphasis on modern integrated circuit (IC) technology, and the revision of nearly one third of the previous edition’s chapter problems and review questions refresh this text while retaining its proven approach. Items such as math anxiety boxes, check yourself exercises, and activities represent this approach and the underlying philosophy of mastering math through practice. Connect is the only integrated learning system that empowers students by continuously adapting to deliver precisely what they need, when they need it, and how they need it, so that your class time is more engaging and effective.
