Summary: Who benefits from smart technology? Whose interests are served when we trade our personal data for convenience and connectivity? Smart technology is everywhere: smart umbrellas that light up when rain is in the forecast; smart cars that relieve drivers of the drudgery of driving; smart toothbrushes that send your dental hygiene details to the cloud. Nothing is safe from smartification. In Too Smart, Jathan Sadowski looks at the proliferation of smart stuff in our lives and asks whether the tradeoff-exchanging our personal data for convenience and connectivity-is worth it. Who benefits from smart technology? Sadowski explains how data, once the purview of researchers and policy wonks, has become a form of capital. Smart technology, he argues, is driven by the dual imperatives of digital capitalism: extracting data from, and expanding control over, everything and everybody. He looks at three domains colonized by smart technologies’ collection and control systems: the smart self, the smart home, and the smart city. The smart self involves more than self-tracking of steps walked and calories burned; it raises questions about what others do with our data and how they direct our behavior-whether or not we want them to. The smart home collects data about our habits that offer business a window into our domestic spaces. And the smart city, where these systems have space to grow, offers military-grade surveillance capabilities to local authorities. Technology gets smart from our data. We may enjoy the conveniences we get in return (the refrigerator says we’re out of milk!), but, Sadowski argues, smart technology advances the interests of corporate technocratic power-and will continue to do so unless we demand oversight and ownership of our data. show more

The real-world focus of Martocchio’s text is evident on every page, as the author seeks to balance current academic thought with brief examples of contemporary benefits practices in business. With 55 years of success in the principles of accounting market, Fundamental Accounting Principles, 21e by Wild, Shaw and Chiappetta has endured and adapted to changes in accounting, technology, and student learning styles. The final two chapters present a unified coverage of sample-data and continuous-time signal processing systems. Experience a Personalized Approach How many students think they know everything about introductory psychology but struggle on the first exam? LearnSmart, McGraw-Hill’s adaptive learning system, pinpoints students’ metacognitive abilities and limitations, identifying what they know-and more importantly, what they don’t know.Using Bloom’s Taxonomy and a highly sophisticated “smart” algorithm, LearnSmart creates a personalized, customized study plan that’s unique to each individual student’s demonstrated needs. Unlike other natural resource management texts that focus solely on the ecological aspects of resources-and with an overly pessimistic view of the future-this text explores natural resource management in context in a functional, applied framework by integrating ecology, history, planning, economics, and policy into coverage of each natural resource, and by providing a balanced, guardedly optimistic view of the most current research and technology’s capability to overcome natural resource problems. The globalization of fashion is a pervasive theme presented in many ways including history, international sourcing and trade and retailing. Too Smart : How Digital Capitalism is Extracting Data, Controlling Our Lives, and Taking Over the World by Jathan Sadowski In their new Sixth Edition, McShane and Von Glinow continue the trailblazing innovations that made previous editions of Organizational Behavior recognized and adopted by the new generation of organizational behavior (OB) instructors. New to this edition is the inclusion of an adaptive diagnostic tool and interactivities to help students master key concepts. Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation takes the perspective of the general manager at the product line, business unit, and corporate levels. Based on the latest research in the resource-based view of the firm and organizational economics, it develops a rigorous approach to the many important issues surrounding the scope of the firm. Each year, hundreds of thousands of students improve their test scores and final grades with these indispensable study guides. It offers excellent advice on developing and polishing prose, with an emphasis on style and process – all with wit, charm, and intelligence. This text is derived from DSP First: A Multimedia Approach, published in 1997, which filled an emerging need for a new entry-level course not centered on analog circuits in the ECE curriculum.
